The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

Run from Police, kill a cyclist 🤬

And then run from that crash. Hit and run needs to be treated far more harshly by the courts. Hell, if they are ever caught driving again, that should trigger an immediate decade in jail with only a cursory trial where police need to prove they were driving. That trial can happen days after offense. No need to drag it out.

I watched the CP24 blurb while having breakfast and wondered why SIU was involved but it doesn't sound like it was a police chase.

The unintended consequences factor comes into play here. The harsher the punishment the greater temptation to run.

There is probably a reason for running from the traffic stop, drugs, warrants, driving dirty etc. Then they kill someone.

Required:

A year in jail for anyone sheltering or abetting the perpetrator.

Peer pressure: Anyone caught with a another person that is armed or carrying drugs get charged as well. There used to be a found-in clause. It would get around pretty quick that if you were found associating with bad LeRoy Brown, your name would be on a police blotter. Suddenly LeRoy Brown is short on friends.

Mini spike strip gets dropped and kicked in front of the rear of the vehicle as the officer approaches.

handicap parking spots frequently have the spot next to it painted off for larger vehicles that have ramps/etc extending outwards.

Those using mobility aids also need extra space to get in and out; or to use their assistive devices...

My ex-GF had a brain tumour and a series of strokes, that left her using leg braces and a walker to get around; and we had an appropriate parking pass.
That's my truck in the handicap spot, that's my ex's walker, and a that's an ******* in a Porsche that chose to make his own parking spot.... Chris had a hard time moving around with her walker in that tight space, and it may have hit the drivers side of the improperly parked car many, many times and with great force as she struggled to get into our truck.

Must have been a few years ago.

Another overhead sign hit. Pretty piss poor request for information by police. Don't police cars have dash cams? Should be able to mine that data pretty quickly to narrow down a timeframe instead of "last week".

Why do the work when you can trot out Constable Twitter to ask the public to do it for you?

Not on the Compass camera system. Police can't be everywhere, at all times, so how else to find out who did it other than public support?

Police dash cams automatically download when they go near a station. I would hope that their archiving software was competent and allowed you to view shots taken at a location. Obviously reviewing every individual cars footage to look for that location is not feasible. If the sign wasn't damaged at 22:00 on thursday and was damaged at 08:00 on friday, you at least have a window. If you got really lucky, that window plus a constantly on camera (compass, personal, business, etc) gets you a plate so you can complete the hit and run charge (well at least you have the vehicle, tying the driver to the crash may be harder but camera may help that as well). Depending on the length of the window, going through continuous footage may be very labour intensive.

Another bright spark posted many tiktok videos of his bad driving/fake plates and challenging police to catch him. They did. 22 yo from Aurora charged. Interesting to me was they got charged with stunting x3 but only got a single 14 day impound and 30 day license suspension. Vehicle seizure after the fact for stunting doesn't even have a whisper of legitimacy of protecting the public. That is clearly just punitive and punishment before trial.

This could probably also be cross-posted in the police thread. The police have identified the vehicle as a BMW 5XG. Amazing. You have the car in your possession and you have no idea what the model is.

EDIT:
Also a media fail. They tried to post a video of something related to this but instead posted a video of a cop giving chest compressions to someone after an MVC. They should never have published the resuscitation video. The family should sue them for emotional distress.
