The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

What scanner do you use?
Recently scanner radio and data. Some upsides and downsides vs a proper scanner. This is free, reasonably high uptime and accessible from far by a moron (eg listen to simcoe when heading north from gta to get an idea of what crap you are driving into). Only use a few hundred mb of data a month running it.

Edit:
Real scanner costs a bundle of money up front, a bundle of time to get interesting channels registered in appropriate groups and obviously reception varies with location. It is nice that you can make your own groups though and you aren't reliant on someone else. My preferred simcoe station disappeared one day and never came back. Now I use a different one that I find less helpful (for instance, new one includes georgian bay marine weather alerts which i never care about and is missing fire dispatch). If this one disappears, i could get opp still but probably not paramedics without a real scanner. I guess if I got annoyed enough, I could setup SDR with an antenna and I could be the source for others. Seems like a lot of effort for minimal benefit.

Why is that surprising? Other than the Nissan micro or some vehicles with a 100mph limiter, what vehicle sold in the last decade cant get to almost 200?
Many moons ago, I was driving my parents Chevy Celebrity. 4 cylinders of anger.... lol.
The speedo went to 120km/h. You could bury the needle into nomans land.
I was pulled over coming back from McMaster late one night. Like 3am. Nobody on the roads at 3 am in those days. I saw a cop at the side of the road and he pulled out. I slowed down to be pulled over.

He asked.... "do you know how fast you were going?". I said, "I don't know.... the speedo doesn't go that high." He did laugh......
I was honest..... had a nice looking girl in the car.... got off with a warning.

I got stopped on the Trans Canada riding a CBX by a very cute RCMP officer. She asked the same question, I replied "no but I'll bet you're about to tell me." She laughed and told me to get lost.

The opp police scanner alone is enough to keep this thread hopping. In the past 10 minutes there has been a tractor trailer from a driving school disabled in a live lane on the highway and it has no working hazard lights, a sidewalk plow in lane 2 on the 401 going very slowly, a pickup disabled in a live lane and refusing a tow and a car on the qew in the left lane with its hazards on, furniture on roof and doors flapping in the breeze.
Disturbing video that everyone should see

I want to go ape on the truck driver but a friend once pointed out a scenario where you see something ahead and think it'll move. Then you realize it won't and it's too late.

Things come up on you pretty damned fast at 100+ Kmh, in the dark, and you aren't doing anything with a loaded rig in a second or two.

Hopefully the idiot in the car survived. Four ways or on/off brakes rapidly to make it obvious that something has gone very (*&(*&*&ing wrong. Sitting there with glorified tail lights is basically committing suicide. Given the limited traffic, there are zero reasons for a car to be stopped in a live lane. Even if the drivetrain locked up, you could get to the shoulder. Sadly, most people react poorly and incorrectly to most adverse driving situations.

Nope, it was a fatality.

And the trucker will most likely be at fault for slamming into a stopped car.

Everyone loses here.
I wouldn't think so if the car was stopped in a live lane rather than the breakdown lane, at night, on a limited access highway. Many places have laws against just that, because this is the outcome.

True but you are also responsible for your vehicle and not outdriving your headlights. The excuse for a crash that you didn't see the obstacle in time is BS. Not every obstacle has blinking lights on it. Just be thankful if they do as that makes your life easier.

I knew some who crashed into a stopped car on the 400. The stopped car could have been in the acceleration lane under a bridge. Car #2 is accelerating to merge and suddenly Bam.

The stopped driver got charged.

Lots of hospital time for everyone.

And think of the baby ducks....

Wha? Vin, registration, plate????? Stolen car???
Given how we treat hit and run, you have little reason not to run if you are already looking at a criminal charge. Dui is the most obvious that if you can disappear for a bit, they have very little hope of conviction.

‘my Porsche was in the driveway when I went to sleep officer’

Fair enough but no suspects???? I would figure ‘investigation ongoing’, but nadda? Sheeesh
