The Bad Drivers of Ontario Thread

Another dump truck driver assuming his well-deserved position in this thread. Pushed a mini sideways up an on ramp onto the Gardiner (~500m).

It looks like both drivers may be eligible for this thread. The truck basically got her with a pit maneuver, not sure who was actually changing lanes at the time. If it was the truck, you would expect that she was hanging out in the blind spot for too long as he should have seen her if she was advancing relative to the truck.

As expected, the truck driver said he didn't realize he was pushing a car.

"She said she was merging onto the westbound Gardiner Expressway at the ramp near Lake Shore Boulevard and Jarvis Street when a truck didn't see her and bumped her vehicle’s rear end."

This her?

Google Maps

My guess would be that she tried to merge onto the ramp in the intersection from the middle lane, and the truck may not have seen her.
This happens a lot on the Gardiner onramps and there are sometimes police blitzes to pull these people over, because it's dangerous.
Truck driver should still have felt her though, and I could be wrong, it's also possible she was merging from the right.

The truck was against the driver side. Either he went onto the ramp from the middle lane and collected her (&%%hole) or she was moving left from the right hand turn lane trying to go straight through the intersection.

She could also have been hit in the rear and spun with the wheels turned left. Would be nice if they stated which lane she was merging from. I guess there's also the possibility that she was trying to merge from Jarvis. We will probably never know. I like to get in the correct lane early, if I miss the opportunity I will carry on in the lane I'm in and take a different route, rather than trying to force my way in.

I am thinking that she was making a right turn onto the entrance ramp via this right-turn lane: Google Maps

... and tried to beat the dump truck that was coming from the other lane, having turned right into that ramp from westbound Lakeshore. Here's how that spot looks, looking backwards at it: Google Maps

It's quite easy to conceive that she tried to beat the truck to the merge, but the truck clipped her left rear fender and turned her sideways, without the truck driver having seen her.

It is about 500 m from that spot (Jarvis to WB Gardiner) to where I think the video was taken from (tall building beside Gardiner between Yonge and Bay). At 60 km/h that would take 30 seconds.

Probably it. Was explaining to someone one day about someone running the yield sign at the South Kingsway & Queensway ramp.
He had to go there the next day and check. He'd never noticed the yield signs before, because people tend to merge when the ramp is jammed.

Ok, clearly this is in the wrong thread but we don't have a "good drivers of ontario" thread. Huge thumbs up to the truck driver paying attention and trying to save the guy. Happened March 17/21 on 401 near exit 222.

Impressive - guess he got tagged by the trailer.

Rewatched a few times wondering what the crazy guy was doing. did he drop something and it rolled out? who runs out like that.
until I read the description...

serious props to that truck driver.

This bothers me to no end. How many times I’ve seen people dive across lanes at the last second on the highway because they were going to miss their exit. Seen a few drop anchor as well. On the highway!!!!!

??‍♂️

The launch across the bullnose or the backing up along the shoulder happen often too. For those types of manoeuvres, upon conviction you should go back to G1 and relearn how to drive with some brain being used.

Sometimes, it's the same people who will veer across three lanes as they enter the highway at less than traffic speed.

Unfortunately, it includes motorcycles, as someone has told them that driving in lanes 2 & 3 is more dangerous than in lane 1.

OK, with the truck vs. Mini thing this hadn't occurred to me, until I saw the Google Maps image from @Brian P's post. I used to use that ramp a fair bit, when lanes were closed on Yonge, before the lockdown. Pretty sure that I know what happened.

The lane to exit onto The Gardiner, from Jarvis, also continues to Lakeshore so that you can turn onto that, instead of the ramp to The Gardiner. At rush hour the ramp to The Gardiner backs up and there's a lineup on Jarvis, to get onto it. Almost no one wants to turn onto Lakeshore. Entitled idiots will cruise up the left lane on Jarvis, switch to the right lane to turn onto Lakeshore, then jump the queue to get onto the ramp for The Gardiner. While this isn't illegal (no signage), it should be. To make matters even worse the legitimate ramp from Jarvis to The Gardiner has yield signs, making law abiding people have to wait for the entitled idiots.

So since it would be close to impossible for a major construction sized dump truck to make the "entitled" turn I figure that the Mini jumped the queue and, the dump truck driver not expecting anyone to run a red light and come off Lakeshore, to take the ramp, didn't see the Mini cut in front of him. < BANG! > Mini hood ornament.

EDIT:
There is a video of the dumb kid vaping in a parking lot with all his buddies talking about his charges. He is not concerned. His buddy asked how he is allowed out and the dumb kid said his parents let him and his mom gave him her phone as the cops had seized his. Just a general self-important jag-off.

I was hoping you'd weigh in on that one, I still remember the ramp being featured in your dashcam compilations

TL: DR 31 yo prick from Brampton took his jeep offroading in a cemetery and got stuck.

I'm imagining grandma's grave being driven over by some confused suburbanite trying to test out the automotive equivalent of a North Face backpack... one that chooses a cemetery? I think I'd be upset.

At least it sounds like he's being charged appropriately. The photo is still... damning, but article says he didn't drive over any graves. Supposedly. Am I correctly understanding the maximum penalties are a $50,000 fine or 2 years in jail?
