Re: GTAM Trackday at TMP!!

I'll be ordering a *125/80R-17* KR448 Compound 32M3 and also a *200/55R-17* KR449 N-TEC Compound 5436 soon, for my upcoming track day :)

I'm coming to see how this works out too ^^^^^^......along with all the other bits.....adding up to total chaos

and I'll bring along 3 gopros to cover your bike......I dont want to miss anything !!!!

they better............nobody's actually riding !!.....................:)

Re: GTAM Trackday at TMP!!

N-Tec Slicks in Green Group LOL.

What is your obsession with running oversized tires??
Same reason all the other street guys do, cause they look cool ;)

I don't trust my 2CT's very much, especially for the track. If getting track specific slicks why not run the 200's?

Well..... to be fair the 200/55 is meant for a 6" rim.

Those tires aren't going to work properly because you won't have them anywhere near ideal operating temperature. Its easier to keep hypersport street tires at the right temp because that's what they're meant for.

What will work better.. a hypersport street tire (Q2 perhaps) at ideal temp or a cold slick?

I wouldn't worry about Ntec slicks your first time out, I ran Ntec slicks at TMP after my first day there and they were very confidence inspiring, but they were also very unforgiving on the sliding, especially with my stock suspension. I ran 125/80 and 195/70 on a 600 and they were very tall, and changed the ride height of my bike complicating things as it changed the bike a lot. Also do you have warmers for them? I ran regular pilot powers my first day at TMP, and although they were a little sketchy when they got hot, I dont think any slick would have made a difference my first day. I didn't even get close to dragging knee my first day. None of the fancy parts on my bike made a difference that first day, I didn't actually start to drag knees or use my slipper clutch until my 2nd or 3rd track day there. As for gearing I ran +7 in the rear on my 600, which worked pretty good for me. If I had to do it all over again I would use a good set of DOT race tires, and trade half the fancy parts on my bike for a Ohlins rear shock and some good suspension tuning...

Its a lot of fun but very expensive, especially if you start to get fast out there, or happen to crash :( ....Bottom line just go have fun and don't get caught up with trying to prove anything to anyone. First day is more of a feeler, I rode for like 7 years on the street before trying track, and its a completely different animal. The best thing for me was just to follow people with more experience and watch their lines and breaking points.

Re: GTAM Trackday at TMP!!

Without warmers those slicks are going to be extremely....slick.

I experienced the same. 100% stock bike and got my knee down on my 3rd trackday and made full use of my slipper clutch

Watch braking points.... but gradually work up to it. Just because someone with more track experience in your group uses a braking point doesn't mean you should do the same right away.

PS: I have 100% trust in my Q2's, used them until I got to faster intermediate speeds.

This. Maybe TLDeano can chime in as he runs those, and has pretty decent red group times.

2ct's would be fine if your an average beginner, I ran them for my first season and did fine:

I didn't find them too bad for the session I ran after forgetting to switch my warmers on. But that was a 'bogie. And, as Mr Bickle never tires of telling us, TMP sucks heat out of warmed tires so, I suppose, will be slower to build heat in tires.

All I can say is if there's a spot prize for most tricked out bike in green group, then TAFB is a nailed on cert.

Re: GTAM Trackday at TMP!!

I did the same thing at SMP and it was pretty sketchy for 2 laps but they came around, mine were semi warm so I could only imagine dead cold slicks would be scary especially for your first TD and on a much slower track.

Re: GTAM Trackday at TMP!!

You can lose the front end pretty easy if u run it hot into 1 on cold tires, it happened sunday to a guy i met at the track....first session, first corner, lost his front end on cold tires

I put a cage in my car after spinning in that corner at over 200km/h. It's not the only reason I don't do TMP but it's a good one.

Over 200km/hr? What kind of car are we talkin about here?

If memory serves me correct from back when I was tracking a similar car, it's a 550+ rwhp f-body.

Thanks for the info. I thought the track tires would be quicker to warm up, and would be stickier even when colder. I didn't realize it was the other way around!

My girlfriend was running Q2's on her 07 Gixxer 600 at TMP and she said she really liked them. When it rained, she was the ONLY one out on the track! lol.

Thanks for your input Johnny, I really appreciate it. I've got no warmers or generator.

Hmmmm. Might be Q2's then.

What about D211 GP's, or D211 GPA's? Listed as DOT track tire, still going to need warmers to get up to optimal temp? I'd imagine it's going to be pretty chilly Sept 1st, so without warmers my tires prolly ain't gonna be get very hot.

Ya it does seem a bit counter intuitive.

It's very hard to get and keep heat in the tires at TMP. In Sept it could be cool, if ambient temps were below 20C I would not be able to keep tires at ideal operating temp. For the NTecs that means about 80C rear and 60C front. You'll be able to get the 211s a bit warmer but still not anywhere near where they should be. Then you might run into the issue of Dunlops tearing because they are off temp. Dunlops are very sensitive to that. Believe it or not, the faster I get the more consistent tire wear I get.

I really would suggest the Q2 over the slicks for you. Talk to Sandy or Dave Noble for pressures and go from there.

Thanks for the advice.

I see they are available in 190/55 and 200/50. My 07 R1 has the OEM size tire on it now (190/50) and I've heard people get much better handling out of a 190/55. Would you go 190/55 or 200/50?
