TAFB gets a blipper!! (Moved from GTAM Trackday thread)

Re: GTAM Trackday at TMP!!

lol just look at the tire design on each... you can't compare the two when it comes to standing water/puddles. Rain riding dictates smooth throttle and steering input.

600's like to go ............mmmeeeaaaaaaaeeeeeeeeAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1000's like to go meaAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can have a decent and enjoyable ride on DOTs, but if there's standing water and you have the option for proper rain tires with constant drizzle, go with proper rains.

Thats bollocks. I found racing my 1000 superbike in the wet easier than my 600. MUCH easier. I do agree - you need proper rain tires.

Thanks for the info. I thought the track tires would be quicker to warm up, and would be stickier even when colder. I didn't realize it was the other way around!

My girlfriend was running Q2's on her 07 Gixxer 600 at TMP and she said she really liked them. When it rained, she was the ONLY one out on the track! lol.

Thanks for your input Johnny, I really appreciate it. I've got no warmers or generator.

Hmmmm. Might be Q2's then.

What about D211 GP's, or D211 GPA's? Listed as DOT track tire, still going to need warmers to get up to optimal temp? I'd imagine it's going to be pretty chilly Sept 1st, so without warmers my tires prolly ain't gonna be get very hot.

If you just worry about learning the lines and proper body positioning, you will be busy all day at slower speeds and your tires should do just fine.

Ya it does seem a bit counter intuitive.

It's very hard to get and keep heat in the tires at TMP. In Sept it could be cool, if ambient temps were below 20C I would not be able to keep tires at ideal operating temp. For the NTecs that means about 80C rear and 60C front. You'll be able to get the 211s a bit warmer but still not anywhere near where they should be. Then you might run into the issue of Dunlops tearing because they are off temp. Dunlops are very sensitive to that. Believe it or not, the faster I get the more consistent tire wear I get.

I really would suggest the Q2 over the slicks for you. Talk to Sandy or Dave Noble for pressures and go from there.

I ran Q2's at Round 3 at Grand bend and they did just fine, I think the pressure Dave gave me was 26 rear and I can not remember the front, just ask him

Same here. I just used the standard 30/28 for track pressures. Worked fine for me.

How about the Bridgestone S20's? Anybody run em on the track yet? All the reviews say they have more grip, warm up faster and provide better feedback than the Q2's!?

Put tires on your bike,, end discussion!

You aren't skilled enough to tell the difference in grip between ANY of them.

You could ride around in green or yelow all day on Pilot Road 2 sport touring tires and have a great time, need no warmers, and actually learn stuff.

Ahhhhhh! Oh well, replaced my almost new 2CT's with the S20's. Hopefully I'll be able to tell the difference :(

You'll be safer and more confident on the S20s. But you won't be able to push them... and don't try. Save that for say... your third time out.

Sounds like a good plan :)
