Supplements?

not if you time it right... shut it down after dinner till before lunch.

Hey sonny have some of us over for some cage fighting or rolling whatever you guys call it. could be fun! like a fight club!

It works for sure but hard to do for more than a few days

I don't have trouble other than the first few days. After that, a 16/8 split is simple. And I love gorging myself when noon hits, :D

I love canadianprotein.com and sometimes pick up a few things from the sister site nationalprotein. Im pretty sure it was HardWrkr13 who mentioned it in the other fitness post and thats how I found out about it. So glad as they have good stuff. Chocolate Peanut flavoured whey FTW. I buy the 25lb box, the bag of whey inside seems endless. Though costco recently had a decent sale on whey isolate a week ago... I think it was $38 for a 4.4lb tub.

Anyway, unflavoured BCAAs is very gross and bitter so yeah a lot like chalk in water. If can mask the flavour mixing it with a sugary drink or if you want to go the sugar-free route, buy some Walden Farms sugar free syrup. I buy the Pancake syrup and the strawberry syrup.. The pancake syrup is impressive and on some protein pancakes, it tastes like the real thing.

The thing I notice though buying bulk unflavoured BCAAs and why I dont bother anymore is that it doesnt seem to dissolve as well in water as the brand name flavour BCAA drinks do. It kind of foams up and floats at the surface.

What is a decent bcaa powder that wont break the bank?

Ive tried a few different ones but the one I like the most is Scivation Xtend. Check out nationalprotein.ca from time to time and try to catch a decent sale.
The regular price is $70+ which is expensive but they had in on special for quite a while and it was like $50 something bucks for the 90 serving tub. I think its a good product.

I keep an eye on the "Blowout Specials" page at nationalprotein and just wait any interesting sales. They have one on MusclePharm stuff right now so you could pick up a bottle of MP Amino1, a 50serving tub for $38. Thats not cheap but you could try it out and see if you feel any effect from it. If not, dont bother continuing. Ingredient-wise its pretty similar to Xtend.

I should post this link in here since on the topic. Alan Aragon's take on supplementing with BCAA's... Its short but the even shorter version is he thinks its a waste of money. I agree for the most part in saying that if you have a high protein diet, there is no "need" but in any case I do like a intra-workout BCAA drink here and there and I figure why not.

I fully agree. Whey powder and good meats have all the BCAAs - and then some - in a more absorbable form.

how bout this?

I agree that BCAA's aren't exactly necessary. They may be able to give you an edge, but i'm not sure how to quantify it.
ajaxguy - what protein(s) + other supplements do you currently take?

BTW I find Kaizen protein from Costco to be great bang for your buck.

Actually thats what I am on now and have been for a while..that kaizen isolate from costco. Plus I take creatine and a multi. I may switch over to some of that canadaprotein stuff though, looks like a good value.

Doesn't look that good to me. If you look at the price per serving, its nothing special and it also contains caffeine, not sure if you want that or not. Then you consider that 1 serving only contains 3g of BCAAs while a product like Xtend contains 7g + 2.5g glutamine, + electrolyte blend, citruline malate etc... Then there is the fact that I've never heard of "Top Secret Nutrition" and who knows if they meet label claims.

Walmart Body Fortress. Inexpensive whey protein, tastes OK, has a full BCAA chart on the back of it. 30G protein, 150 calories, 7G carbs and more than 10G of amino acids (which are part of the protein blend) per scoop.

Get you some creatine.

Use a pre-workout if you have to...... and work out hard.

Done. Everything else on the market is probably a waste of your money.

Probably made in China. Ground up cardboard. Relax just kidding. The whole supplement, vitamin, etc. industry could well be crime of the century. Not saying it is, but damn, the potential for tomfoolery sure looks huge. Label shlable.

Carry on.

This. Keep it simple. Even pre workouts are overrated IMO. Big cup of black coffee with coconut oil has been my pre workout for the last year and has me wired more than any pwo ever has. I sipp coconut water with a scoop of gatorade powder for my intra.

Get your macro-nutrients in order, find a proven routine that hits each muscle group twice a week, incorporate progressive overloading and focus on/perfect the big 5 compound lifts. I recommend Push/Pull/Legs or PHAT. If your not progressing in size and strength, you need to eat more. If you're not recovering properly you need to eat more or reduce volume. There's no secret to this.

Supps worth your money:
Creatine (proven, cheap, effective)
Fish Oil or a good joint supplement
A good multi
Quality whey for convenience if you have a hard time getting in enough cals from real food.

Weight gainers can easily be made with some whey, oats, PB, whole milk or Greek Yogurt/Cottage cheese.

BCAA supps are a complete waste if you're simply trying to build muscle. When it's time to cut or if you're involved in endurance type training is when they could become beneficial.

Body Fortress isn't bad, it's probably not quite as high quality as some other whey, but the price is great:

I mean, it's protein. The only question you have to ask is "does it match with my taste."

Now, Dymatize Elite Casein... tastes like a barn door. They advertise that it has awesome taste, but man... I wish I liked it because it's a more complete protein than just whey, but I can't get the stuff down.

anyone using amino acids during work out? I do and tend to find it really helps with the recovery.. I,ve just got back into working out and I was 295lbs at 41 and 6 foot.. I,m now down to 250 in 3 months and use protein before and after work outs for the BCAA and amino acid fuit drink mix during weight training ( not during cardio days) looking to add creatine into my pre-work out.. any brand you guys find works better? also looking for brands used for glucosamine. I used the veg green mix daily as well.. and multi vitiamins as well as b complex and fish oils. I,m looking to drop about another 30 to 40 lbs of fat but keep around 210 to 220 with some mass..
