Soccer/football thread 2022

Chelski is on Kijiji….slightly used football club for sale. Need to hide assets so no reasonable offer refused.
And of course they came back and won 3-2. No upset today or so it would appear.

C'mon Boreham Wood! Stuff the Toffees tomorrow! :D

Missed the games today with work commitments dragging me away from the home office. How spoiled I've become. Sounds like Minamino had another great performance for Liverpool, adding two more to all the goals he scored to get them to the League Cup final.

Bummed to see Chelsea survive. It's been interesting to see their supporters on Twitter go full-on 'whatabout' with all this, defending old Roman to their last. I suppose they know that without a sugar daddy, they'll be back to mid-table PDQ. He left them a big fat parting gift by writing off £1.5 billion(!) of debt, so they'll have a heck of a head start. The Twitter chatter is the supporters are terrified of a consortium purchase, as the owners will actually expect to turn a profit. They're hoping for another Saudi prince to rescue them from the evil "spend what you earn" dragon and whisk them away to the land of Happily Ever After...

It'll also be interesting to see how Everton does, as Moshiri's strong links to another Russian oligarch/thief, Alisher Usmanov, have forced them to cancel a number of sponsorship deals. If they get relegated (which is actually possible now, especially as Lampard is increasingly looking like yet another disastrous choice), it could get ugly.

Very rare this happens but….I hope Man U do the job tomorrow!
I just can't go that far, but a draw would be a nice blow to both City's title hope and ManU's top four hopes...

Need a GIF of cats and dogs hugging here...

ManU got spanked. I only watched the second half (GP race first then walked the dogs), and I understand the first half was less one sided. But what I did see was not positive, with some players looking distinctly rattled. Wan-Bissaka had an absolute stinker, looking panicked and lost every time he was pressed, and Harry Maguire was doing his best Phil Jones impression, over-committing and generally getting all out of shape. When City finally scored the third, instead of upping their work rate, United seemed to lose all their air and just collapsed. This is a team with some serious mentality issues, and just adding more and more expensive pieces is simply not working.

Rangnick has a lot of pedigree, getting plaudits from all his disciples in German football, but even he doesn't seem to be able to make this expensive assembly of primadonnas work. I can't see any established 'name' coach wanting to take on that dressing room, so they may be forced to gamble on yet another untested up and comer, as they've mostly exhausted all the unemployed old farts.

It can't last forever, but I'll enjoy the schadenfreude for a bit longer. After all, there's lots of other clubs more morally compromised, with despots and oligarchs successfully sportwashing their way to fans hearts. The despicable behavior of Chelsea supporters lately, between some of the unrepeatable songs and chants about Liverpool in the League Cup ('97 was not enough' will give you a taste) and interrupting the support of Ukraine by chanting Roman's dirty name, and they have had a big comeback and shot to the top of my 'man, I hope they lose' table.

Weirdly, in this messed up time in football, with FIFA, UEFA, the FA, the Premier League, the Super League supporters (Real, Barca, Juve), and the sportwashers and financial dopers all lining up to see who can be the most morally bankrupt, Manchester United comes across as not that bad. They spend what they earn, are under the yoke of an ownership group that steals from the club rather than inflating revenues, and have supporters who really stick with them. The plastics have long ago fled to City, Real Madrid or PSG, too (and, unfortunately, Liverpool to a certain degree). While my trauma from the Ferguson years still stings, I don't take as much joy in their failings as I used to. I'd actually (amazingly) prefer that Liverpool was fighting them for the league than City.

At least United can fill their stadium. City just feels like an extension of a science experiment. No fans, an annoying coach, a weirdly cold and robotic style of play, and huge but effective spending on players who don't seem to care about playing in any sort of atmosphere.

Apropos of nothing, my "Man, I hope they lose!" table looks like this now:

1. Chelsea (recent leap up the table, supporters and owner are the worst)
2. City
3. PSG
4. ManU
5. Real Madrid/Barcelona (tie)
7. Atletico Madrid (great club and supporters, hate the coach and style of play)
8. Newcastle (total script flip with Saudi involvement, used to love them, will likely rise in the rankings as they continue to spend and get better)
9. Lazio (fascist supporters)
10. Everton (I'd be more upset about the oligarch funding if all that money hadn't been p*ssed up a tree on an epic scale)
11. Juventus
12. Rangers (awful history)
13. Leicester (bunch of Tory supporters)

I'm sure I've missed a few, but these are front of mind now. Anyone else have a list?

Do you have a shotgun, rocking chair and a perfectly manicured lawn?

Historically, this has been mine:
  1. Man Utd - bandwagon fans from the late 90s/early 2000s, Ruud Van Nistelrooy
  2. Real Madrid - the Galacticos era mainly
  3. Juventus - the cheating, Nedved and Trezeguet always annoyed me
Lately it's just been Man City (don't like Pep nor his style of play) and Atletico (the way they play the game)...

Here’s a team I like…Colombia! Always entertaining…used to be even more entertaining with Valderama and this guy…

Oof, Everton. I usually think it's best to give managers time, but it's really starting to look like Lampard is out of his depth. Absolutely spanked today, and looked comprehensively out-managed. On this form, relegation is a clear and present danger.

As for Spurs, Saturday against ManU will be quite interesting...

Considering so much of my support revolves around working class gatekeeping of 'real' fans (inherited from listening to Liverpool supporters, I suppose), maybe a council flat in Bootle would be more appropriate?

For balance, aside from Liverpool and Roma, I also occasionally cheer for a bunch of clubs, including Dortmund and Mainz (because of Klopp), Union Berlin, St Pauli, Celtic, Swansea, Fenerbahce, and Trastevere.

Don't forget Luis Diaz! He hasn't connected as often as he might since joining from Porto, but he brings a great element of chaos to Liverpool's attack, and will run at anyone...

Not a fun first half to watch as a Liverpool supporter. Nearly had a heart attack with that studs-up foul on Thiago by Sanchez, but the ref seems content to let the hacking by Inter continue unabated. Inter has had the ball, but few real chances, and have been running like crazy. Hoping Liverpool weathers the inevitable storm after half-time and can exploit some tired legs after 60' or so.

Also, Bayern really putting the smackdown on Salzburg, not much hope of an upset there...

Lautaro's goal was nice! Van Dijk sort of froze/backed off, giving him space to pick his spot. I thought the red card was a bit harsh. Lots of good chances for Liverpool but unlucky to not score. Overall, deserved progress.

Real Madrid were a changed team in the second half yesterday. Ancelotti worked his magic... Modric was on fire. Big mistake by Donnarumma to let RM back in the game, but credit to them, they fought hard to claw it back...

Looking forward to knocking Chelski out of the FA Cup. If they can afford the bus ride north.
