Soccer/football thread 2022

Didn't watch, mesmerised as I was with the fireworks at Anfield, but (extremely biased Liverpool) Twitter said they were absolutely shite and very lucky against an Atleti side that struggled to finish. This is also an Atleti side that has dropped to 5th in La Liga, though you never know in a knock-out round against a team as versed in the dark arts as one led by Simeone.
Liverpool were on fire!

Seems a bit harsh on Man U. They weren't impressive by any means but improved in the second half, caught Atletico napping on the goal and managed to grind out a decent away result. Not many chances in the game, lots and lots of fouls, not a pretty one. I don't see either of those two going far in the tournament playing like that...

Last I checked, Boro were in a scrap for playoff position in the Championship, no? Would be fun to have them back, even if the last go 'round was a bit of a calamity. If they play their cards right, they could get on the relegation yo-yo with Fulham and Bournemouth...

Yep - we're in a battle for that last playoff spot with a handful of teams. Yesterday we were in 6th briefly until The Blades won.
I've been following/supporting Boro since 1994 when a colleague of mine who is from the area asked me to lookup his home town club on the new fangled "interwebs". Found a mailing list for him and printed stuff out for him. They were in the midst of a promotion push and I got swept up in the hub-bub and haven't looked back.

We had some glory days in the Premier League with Ravanelli, Juninho, Emerson, Geremi, Mendieta, Zenden, Viduka, Jimmy-Floyd, Gazza etc.
Final of the UEFA Cup (which we lost) - but some amazing games and comebacks to get us there, one League Cup victory (against Bolton) and a lot of mediocrity in between.

Throughout this time, we've had the same owner (Steve Gibson) and while he's put his heart and soul and countless millions of $ into the club, some feel we need new ownership to take us back to the promised land. Time will tell!

It's a bit deceiving, as Leeds' system isn't designed for parking the bus, and they have some significant injuries. Also, in a more normal year, Liverpool would have taken their foot off the gas and played keepaway for the second half. Still, it was nice to see them dispatch a lesser opponent without drama, which hasn't always been easy for them.

Sounds more realistic. As I said, my sources are mostly Liverpool fans who love ManU sucking, so not impartial. Weirdly, most in the UK watched the ManU game, as the Liverpool game wasn't available to watch there.

Lots of fouls and more time spent on shithousery than playing is page one of the Atletico playbook. Having seen them play Liverpool through four torturous games in the past couple years, I hope I never have to watch them play again. They embody all the worst aspects of the sport, including poor sportsmanship, cheating (diving), dull play, and relentless whining to the ref.

All that, and I still kind of hope they beat ManU...

Funny how coming along at the right time means you click with a club. I'd love to say I fell in love with Liverpool when they were winning, but I started supporting them at probably the worst possible time, as few years after then end of their league domination.

Ah, the joys of supporting a mid-tier club. Makes the victories all the sweeter, though.

So many supporters dream of being the next Man City or PSG, given unlimited funds to propel endless success. But I'm grateful that Liverpool has FSG rather than a petro-state or oligarch benefactor. Granted, hedge fund managers aren't paragons of morality, but there's something special about seeing the club succeed on its own merits rather than via financial doping. It makes the supporters all the more important, as their 'engagement' with the club offers a tangible result on the pitch.

Yep. I've never been one to follow the "big" clubs, you know, like Newcastle <snort> :p
It's just not in my DNA. Although I do support Dortmund and with Davies playing for Munchen, I have been watching more of those games.
These days, I'd rather watch Brighton v Palace on DAZN - although I will get sucked into the "clash of the titan" matches...although I find they rarely live up to the hype.

Agreed. And MFC is and always has been a working man's (person's) team. I'd rather have someone who's very heart an soul is in the club rather than some billionaire's latest shiny toy.

Any predictions on today’s EPL results?

Slept on this. @bastak got the margin right in the Spurs-Leeds match, if not the final score. Conte will be ebullient again, saying he never doubted these players and how they're the best he's ever coached etc.

Seems Bielsa may be done at Leeds after giving up a record number of goals in February, but I think that's hard on him. They have three of their best players out injured, particularly Kalvin Phillips, their midfield linchpin. How many clubs fire the dullest of dull draw chasers like Tony Pulis and Big Sam because they get sick of watching 10 men behind the ball all year? At least with Bielsa, youre going to get fireworks, even if sometimes it's a firework in the face. Or the plums.

Most have started, including a red card for Brentford, but for the ones that haven't:

BHA 2 - AVL 2
EVE 1 - MCY 4

Hear you on Pulis. Had him at Boro for a spell. SNORING!

Here’s a tricky one for the UK and the Premier League..if they are going to enact severe sanctions this guy should be front and centre.

He's bought Israeli and Portuguese citizenship, so it's definitely not a simple situation. Considering Saudi Arabia has been bombing Yemen for years, yet the Premier League sanctioned their purchase of Newcastle, I'm not holding my breath for them to suddenly become a beacon of morality. That greasy sh*t Infantino dodged questions about his and FIFA's cozy relationship with Putin with the usual platitudes of 'sport not politics'. All I see is his muppet mug grinning in the luxury box between Putin and bin Salman at the last World Cup. Football has some serious reckoning to do with its relationship to despots and money.

Watching Man City play Everton at Goodison right now (not in the face!), and the show of support for Ukraine is pretty overwhelming. Zinchenko was in tears at kickoff. Stuff like this matters, as these games will be shown in Russia, bypassing state media control. It'll be even more potent if clubs, supporters and players make similar statements during the Champions League or International matches.

    Chelsea
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich says he is handing control of the club to the trustees of Chelsea's charitable foundation.
"During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities," he said in a statement.
"I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s Charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.
"I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the club, players, staff, and fans."

And had a nailed on handball for a pen inexplicably chalked off by VAR. There was a theory that it was offside in the build-up, but the PL clarified that that wasn't a factor. It's so hard to understand what the rules actually are, as they're applied differently every week...

Also, old boy Roman has transferred 'stewardship' of Chelsea to the club's charity. He still owns it, can easily still manage it, but it gives the supporters and the league room in their self-delusion to claim nothing needs to be done. Also likely adds some layers of offshore shell companies to protect the club ownership from being stripped. Not unlike the shell companies he uses to fund settlements in Israel...

Confirmed - Bielsa has been let go by a Leeds Utd.
