Soccer/football thread 2022

Agree with you about the Dortmund fans. I went to see a game vs Stuttgart and they are amazing. They arrive 2 hours before the game and start singing and waving flags. The whole “home end” stand holds 25000 fans and it was packed. We never sat down once. It was incredible. BvD forever!
The Yellow Wall is possibly the most impressive supporter element in all sports. The only for I've seen that's comparable is Turkish fans, who are plain old nuts. If you get a chance, look up Turkish basketball. They're truly insane.

Well, my great grandmother’s Canaries are up against it today vs all y’alls LFC. I’m sure we’ll get thumped, but hopefully it’s at least a good game.
I dunno, this feels like a classic banana skin for Liverpool. Coming off an intense Champions League game with delays getting home due to weather, looking past Norwich, and a disciplined Canaries under the impressive Deano, I wouldn't be shocked if they stole a point today. Of course, I wouldn't put money on it, but it's very possible.

I'm just sitting down to watch now, fingers crossed...

LOOK WHAT YOU’VE DONE! Take it back quick.

No kidding. It's been torture to watch. Liverpool dominant in every phase, just can't get a bounce. Norwich has the ball vaguely in an attacking position, somehow steal a goal.

Clear pen on Mane just ignored, too. I hate VAR. Refs wait hoping VAR will bail them out, VAR doesn't make the call to avoid undermining the ref.

Firmino and Jota unavailable, but this smells like maybe another Origi special. Thiago on now, too, and he's been great at unlocking compact defenses...

Edit: Oh, Mane. Beautiful.

Edit edit: SALAH! Assist from Alisson is mind bending. The vision.

Yessssssssss.
Just need a Conte miracle for Spurs against City.

Arsenal with another win, too, sneaking up on top 4 with all those games in hand.

Aaaaaand Roma showing more defensive fragility under Mourinho. Verona already up after five minutes. Special one indeed...

Wow.

Spurs - great game! Did not see that last goal coming!

Roma - unwatchable...

Leeds v Man United.

How did McTominay get away with that poor challenge on Koch without a card even?

Spurs played great. Harry Kane, much as he annoys me, had an absolute world-class game and finished some true stunners. Spurs reminded me of a boxer who spends most of a fight absorbing jabs by ducking behind their gloves, but when an opening is offered, they land a haymaker.

The title chase is on again, at least in theory. If Liverpool beat Leeds midweek, and they otherwise match each other, it comes down to the away game at the Etihad...

I dislike Mourinho so much that I'm torn between wanting to see them do okay and just wanting them to suck so the Friedkins are forced to fire him. They did get two goals out of a pair of kids, but a second draw against an opponent they should be dominating.

Paul Tierney is the ref.

I don't like criticising refs for not being perfect, as their job is brutally difficult: watch 22 players on a huge pitch, all operating at breakneck speed, and most actively trying to deceive you at every opportunity, with vague rules wide open to interpretation, while dozens of cameras can replay every incident in excruciating slow motion so that millions of people watching at home with deep biases can complain with the benefit of hindsight.

All that said, Paul Tierney is the worst ref I've seen in the Premier League, and it's inexplicable that he keeps being given high-profile matches to oversee. Every time I watch him, obvious decisions are wrong, major fouls are ignored, and VAR does nothing.

Oh, and go Leeds. Conditions look foul, hopefully they're exhausted on Wednesday so Liverpool can save their legs...

And with the weather conditions in Yorkshire today...even trickier to determine fouls vs just plain wiping out.

Leeds have equalized...much to my delight.
I’ve been turned off them after years and years of watching refs add insane amounts of “Sir Alex / ManU additional time”.

Plus, I’m a Yorkist. Sound like y’all are mostly Lancastrian - so again I’m outnumbered.

Hoping the Midlands derby later on is a good match. I enjoy watching Wolves...especially the ex-Boro player, Traore.

Fernandes sure tried to cry his way out of having his pocket picked on the second Leeds goal.

Full credit to the crowd for elevating this one. Have always been ambivalent about the darker side of Leeds, both the teams and supporters, but you can't deny their passion. Shame ManU is in the lead again, but it's far from over.

Not sure Liverpool and Manchester live happily together under the Lancaster banner...

Looking forward to this one. Lage has Wolves playing in his style now, which is more measured than Espirito Santo. Leicester is slipping a bit after doing so much with so little for so long.

Hate to break it to you, though: Traore went back to Barcelona in January. He was a fascinating player for Wolves, so dynamic and fun to watch, but struggled to convert that into anything meaningful like goals.

Shoot. I actually recall seeing that.
And yes - so much potential. Pace and creativity up the wing, but no finish.
He was the same at Boro - but seemed to improve at Wolves.

Working from home today so will try to sneak in a bit of Atletico vs Man Utd this afternoon.

Lille put up a fight against Chelsea yesterday. High pressing with a lot of intensity, but could not find a way through an impeccable Chelsea defence. Solid result for Chelsea. Ben Arfa came on for a short cameo at the end - hadn't seen him since the Newcastle days - he's still got it at 34.

Every day is work from home for me. Definitely getting my money's worth out of DAZN.
Watching Liverpool v Leeds for now.

Did anyone catch the CNWT game against Spain this morning? We lost 1-0. Spain has really improved since I saw them last. They've invested a lot into their domestic league which seems to have really kickstarted things.

I missed yesterday's games with irritating work commitments, but no real surprises. Read that Villareal actually had a reason to feel they deserved more against Juventus, who apparently played terribly.

Mostly same for me, and DAZN has a shortcut in my browser to put up on my second monitor at a moments notice.

Liverpool is spanking Leeds so far, and while I feel for them, I want Liverpool to really pad the stats like City regularly does, as there's still a reasonable chance that the league comes down to goal difference. Everyone remembers Crystanbul, with Liverpool collapsing against Palace, but what they don't remember is that they needed to win by 6 to have a shot at the title. If they'd had a better difference going into the last week, it could've been very different...

The flipside is I also hope they don't get too burnt running with Leeds, as they need legs for the League Cup final against Chelsea on the weekend...

I missed that, though I saw they also drew to England recently, who have also put a lot more into the WSL. Apparently the team isn't very strong because half the squad is away prepping for the summer league in North America, so it's not a bad result.

It’s part of a friendly tournament based in the UK this time round. Arnold Clark Cup or some such.
They drew England 1-1 in Middlesbrough (C’mon Boro!), beat Germany 1-0 in Norwich and lost today in Wolverhampton.

They had pretty much a full squad there. But I don’t think Priestman was too worried about it as a lot of the younger players like Grosso, Lacasse etc. got a run out.

Looks like ManUre managed a draw.

It was a weird day in the footy, highlighted by Joel Matip turning into Franz Beckenbauer and marauding through the Leeds back line with the grace of a gazelle. Much like Mane's overhead goal on the weekend, it's something he's been working up to, and Leeds' man-marking was the perfect opportunity.

in Middlesbrough (C’mon Boro!),
Last I checked, Boro were in a scrap for playoff position in the Championship, no? Would be fun to have them back, even if the last go 'round was a bit of a calamity. If they play their cards right, they could get on the relegation yo-yo with Fulham and Bournemouth...

Looks like ManUre managed a draw.
Didn't watch, mesmerised as I was with the fireworks at Anfield, but (extremely biased Liverpool) Twitter said they were absolutely shite and very lucky against an Atleti side that struggled to finish. This is also an Atleti side that has dropped to 5th in La Liga, though you never know in a knock-out round against a team as versed in the dark arts as one led by Simeone.

And Spurs lose to Burnley.
It's funny, a Spurs supporter I know predicted exactly that immediately after the City result. And then anyone I follow on Twitter who supports Spurs (quite a few, actually) said something broadly similar. Most were trying hard to do the reverse jinx, I think, but Spurs gotta Spurs.

The fight for that last Champions League spot could be very interesting, as ManU has had a very soft schedule lately (which is about to change), West Ham has struggled with injuries, and Arsenal, Wolves and Spurs all have games in hand. Still, it could also be a bit like the top of Serie A with everyone falling over each other to match bad results.

At the other end, Everton could legitimately find themselves in yet another relegation scrap. With Burnley finding their Dyche macho mojo again and Newcastle spending their blood money well, Everton had better hope Lampard is the right guy. I can't think of another club that has squandered spending quite as brutally as Everton in the past five years. It's really incredible.

Looks like ManUre managed a draw.
Probably a fair result. Atletico had a better first half and Man Utd improved in the second half. Atletico fell asleep for the Man U goal. Cagey match with lots of fouls as one would expect with Atletico. Pogba was anonymous, with one crossfield pass leading to a chance his only meaningful contribution - they played better when he went off...
