Soccer/football thread 2022

Watching Chelsea supporters lose their minds ("We didn't start no war!") without the slightest thought given to where the billions that funded their success came from has been the best possible advertisement for sportwashing. It'll be really interesting to see how this all pans out. I hope they get bought by someone sensible and revert to their natural place in the middle of the table.

Listening to Guardiola unironically talk about how coaches like Tuchel may need to do due diligence in looking at club ownership when offered a job in future was surreal. I suppose you have to form a kind of denial bubble around yourself in that job when working for murderers just to cope with it all. I'm sure Eddie Howe will be next to feign indignation when asked about who signs his fat paychecks with deep red ink. It'll be old blood money vs new blood money when Chelsea take on Newcastle on Sunday...

Other interesting matches this weekend will be ManU vs Spurs on Saturday for the Europa League spot, West Ham vs Villa for the Burgundy and Powder Blue Kit Shield, and Arsenal vs Leicester to see if the gunners can start to lock down that Champions League spot.

When the teams were taking the pitch to start the ManUre v Spurs game, Ronaldo looked at the camera with a look that when I saw it, I thought “uh oh - he’s up for it today”. Turns out it was, “hold my beer while I score 3”.

Frickin' Spurs gotta be so Spursy. Arsenal needs to take care of business tomorrow against Leicester.

After some early chaos, Liverpool looked in control against Brighton, a team I like a lot, but who seem to specialize in heroic losses. Hopefully Salah just has a minor knock.

Looking at the remaining matches between Liverpool and City, it's going to be a tall order to keep up, as their list includes some weaker opposition.

He had a great game. Always looked dangerous.

The ref on the other hand was really poor - let a lot of dirty tackles slide without showing a card. That Pogba tackle from behind on Kane towards the end, studs on achilles tendon, deserved a red card...

Some crazy games in the EPL today.

Dirty Chelski pulled it off v The Barcodes.
Leeds managing a win...even if it is against lowly Norwich.
Everton loses. Again. Lampard must be gone now surely?
Hammers win the “claret and blue” clash.

And...Gooners are up 1-0 v The Foxes already.

I wouldn’t worry about Chelski….they’ll be on Craigslist soon or Tuchel will bugger off. The new manager ad will look interesting “manager required for top flight team…we can’t pay you, you can’t buy or sell players, no tickets or merchandise will be sold must have own transport that fits 20 people”.

Arsenal takes the win and Leicester didn't look anything like being a danger to come back. This version of the Foxes is worst I've seen since Rodgers took over, fragile against set pieces and toothless in attack. They have no ideas besides passing it around on the outside, and seem incapable of getting any penetration or overlaps. Full credit to Arsenal, while they're still a long way from challenging for the league, they have become very adept at beating all the clubs they should beat and not dropping many points. It'll be a real shock if they don't lock up that 4th place CL spot.

As for Everton, they're going to have to hope they come up against some teams on the beach in the closing weeks, as their schedule is brutal on paper: Newcastle, West Ham, ManU, Liverpool, Chelsea, Leicester, Brentford, Arsenal. At least one of Leeds, Everton or Watford are going down, and if I needed a manager to drop as few points as possible, I'm not sure I'd want Lampard to be my guy. Marsch seems to have Leeds playing hard, and Woy is well experienced in surviving relegation fights from his time at Liverpool...

Over in Italy, my Roma are losing to Udinese, possibly undoing all their good work in the last few games. Genoa also chasing what may be approaching a record for most draws in a row against an off-form Atalanta. Fiorentina won the derby against Bologna, and Napoli won to keep the scudetto hopes alive...

And in the Bundesliga, Dortmund squeaked a 1-0 win over Bielefeld and Bayern only a 1-1 draw yesterday against Hoffenheim.

Not sure München can be caught at this stage or not...

Just Dortmund finding new ways to break supporters hearts, I think. Munich has some big names coming back (Phonzie at the top of the list), and I bet they'll find just enough of another gear to stay ahead of Dortmund for the run-in. While Bayern's not at their imperious best and the defense has been suspect for most of this year, they score enough to make up the difference.

1950 the last time Everton was relegated, shocking if it happens. Looks like they should have let Duncan Fergerson have a shot.

Never mind the imminent return of Davies!

Watching the City v Palace match. City have had 74% of the possession and have had a couple of very close chances. I am really hoping that Palace pop one in on the counter. Klopp must be loving this!

Conor Gallagher is stupid fun to watch. He’s the working man’s Grealish.

Yikes. Couldn't watch today, but grateful to Palace for making the championship a fight. City has occasionally looked vulnerable of late, even needing to rely on yet another botched VAR call to beat Everton. Full credit to Vieira, he's really kicked on from where Woy left off.

Arsenal looking like a huge game now. Hopefully it goes as smooth as the last time they met.
