Simoncelli. MotoGP. DEAD!!!

It would be nice to see the aerial footage to understand what happened prior to the crash. I don't understand what would cause that. Not that we need closure like a relative but if you're a fan I'm sure you're saying WTF (and not enjoying it as others have implied).
Rest in peace.
What needs to be seen? He lost the rear tire, which caused the bike to over-lean and increase its angle to the track. When the tire caught traction again, the bike took him straight into Rossi & Edwards' path. Seriously, it was a freak accident. If he caught traction less than 1 second before or after, he, Rossi, and Edwards probably would have managed to avoid each other.

Kid was a star who may have been more skilled and more charismatic than Rossi himself. Not taking anything away from Rossi, but SuperSic really did have that potential. Really sad loss for MotoGP.

All the reports I read said that he lost the front... I don't know if more needs to be seen, but I'd like to know more about what actually happened and how it could have been avoided, if at all.

Here's a clip that may help clear things up a bit...

Good clip, but I don't think the conclusion in the subtitles is correct. The way the bike kicks over slightly to the left, when it hits the apex, it looks like he loses the front. Could be because the front tire hits the white paint, or it could just be he's that close to the edge of traction (it is the end of the first lap, so tires might still be cool). It appears that he saves it by getting his knee down and lifting the bike, but doesn't quite have the leverage to pull himself back up and onto the bike. I can imagine with his body in that position, and pulling himself up, he's going to pull the bike across the track. It probably would have been better to let the bike go and take the low-side, but being that he's a ballsy fighter, and he doesn't want to end the season with any more DNFs, he hangs on. Maybe that's just instinct taking over at that point. I mean, could he imagine the potential consequences of holding on like that?

Just read the post on the motogp website. Kind of surprised more of the riders didn't show up to his funerral. Dovi and Lorenzo went and they were pretty open about not liking him, thought stoner would have went atleast.

Exactly. If he was going to have any hope of righting the bike again, it had to draw a tighter curve so that the tires had a chance to get back under the the bike and lift it up. Unfortunately, that put him in the path of the two bikes closing in behind him.

Does any one know the corner number that marco crashed on? The Moto2 race ended with a red flag on turn 2 in the 2nd last lap when a rider crashed hard and ended up with a bad concussion. Foreboding prelude to the next race.

This may be rumour, but I read somewhere that the compound on Marcos tires on that fateful day, were different then everybody elses on the grid?

I believe he had the med tire, and everybody went soft?

Also, if you watch when he was battling with Bautista, in Lap 1, he was slipping and fighting the bike in at least one corner. I still have the race on DVR and can pinpoint the exact spot where his bike/tire slipped prior to the crash.

Anybody else shed light on this?

Don't know if this is the clip? He didn't mount the bike though but pushed it out the church

You are right. I misread the article.

"Valentino Rossi had helped wheel Simoncelli's RCV outside the church after the ceremony." - crash.net

For anyone here that's Italian descent, did the very casual dress of the funeral goers surprise you? I'm used to the black suit treatment that happens here, so I had to take an extra second to re-calibrate. Even the father was wearing jeans and a hoodie.

He brought life to the grid. One of the most exciting riders to watch in a long while. He will be sorely missed.

RIP 58 "super sic"

My gut tells me he was going down, knew it, but being the champion he was, he held on and he tried to get the bike up in an effort to get back on track.

And I believe with a little more experience, patience, coached in the right direction, he would have been as good as the best.

Actually I read somewhere that he was conscious for a short bit while they were attending to him. When they reached him he was already in cardiac arrest.
