Simoncelli. MotoGP. DEAD!!!

For anyone here that's Italian descent, did the very casual dress of the funeral goers surprise you? I'm used to the black suit treatment that happens here, so I had to take an extra second to re-calibrate. Even the father was wearing jeans and a hoodie.

Not that unusual outside of big cities. It's common for people to wear jeans to weddings and the like. In many cases, their "jeans and hoodie", if they're designer brands, can be more expensive than a "suit" that you'd buy here and wear to a more formal event. Italians tend to wear a lot of designer casual clothes, but that doesn't mean they're dressed cheap or sloppy.

I know that. It was just a bit of an adjustment to see. That's all.

I should have clarified that I am Italian descent, and have been to a fair number of funerals here, where the black suit is the uniform.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. The words, comments and links were some of the best coverage of this great racer.

If anyone can, check out MotoGP's latest 'After the Flag'. A nice tribute dedicated to the late Marco Simoncelli.
Thanks to everyone who posted warm thoughts and kind words. As a fan it's nice to know that he touched other lives in a positive way.

I don't mean this to sound like sarcasm or insensitive in any way, but i wonder if his helmet came off because of that giant afro he has, he had to tuck all of that under his head scarf and helmet so maybe he didnt fasten it as tightly as he should/could have. Just a slight bit of looseness is all it take to be ripped off with something as violent as a spinning wheel hitting it.

This may be rumour, but I read somewhere that the compound on Marcos tires on that fateful day, were different then everybody elses on the grid?

I believe he had the med tire, and everybody went soft?

Not a rumour, but rather the truth. There were only two riders on the harder compound rear (as far as I know the front was the same s everyone else). I believe these were symmetrical tires (don't think Bridge brought asymmetrical choice to the track). Sic was one of them. Two laps only in, it's a theory with some legs that the tire wasn't cooking at working temp and somehow contributed to him loosing traction. Before people blame him for wrong tire choice, it's rather a necessity with his bigger frame ....

It's not insensitive, it's correct. He wore a size larger helmet because of the hair. AGP will likely be involved with the inquiry.

You have to remember that he was also struck hard by Edwards and Rossi, pinned by his bike. Helmet or not, his chances were slim to begin with.

Ciao Super Sic, you will be sadly missed.

Instead of a minute silence, apparantly Marco's Father has asked for a minute of noise at this weekend's race.

from what i've read/seen, it was an upperbody/neck injury that killed him, not brain. also, in an impact like that, a helmet can only do so much.

Nice one Amazon.

It beats a moment silence IMHO...
Simoncelli's father, Paolo said he would like a minute of 'noise and chaos' - from the 125, Moto2 and MotoGP bikes revving together - in Marco's honour, a fitting tribute to MotoGP's exciting racer.
