Shopping list for 2014 track season

2003 GSXR 600. One of us might race it in lost era as well. PDR team principal Allen Pyburn has created a website, but there are no photos of the new bike up yet. http://prairiedogracing.webs.com/

The guys ran in GTL last season with a rented Racer 5 125 and then a 250. They came second overall, but didn't beat any teams that ran as many races as they did. Obviously they are slow like molasses and so have recruited me hoping to inject some decent speed into the roster. I'll do my best but honestly it's going to be pretty hard offsetting Allen's lap times.

Our team consists of two middle-aged guys pushing 200 lbs (my brother and I), another middle-aged guy (Allen) who is somewhat lighter but only because he got gout and couldn't drink beer anymore, and an occasional team member (Omar) who is younger but probably weighs about the same as a sasquatch, given the similar proportions.

So yeah, pretty exciting....

How can anyone do anything other than wish you the best of luck for the coming season? Sounds like you've already got the right "spirit" for racing.

Picked up an EF1000is inverter for the warmers. Used. Cheap. Purrs like a kitten on first pull.

Eel, you made me laugh. Skin effect is due to voltage, not AC frequency. Solid core is cheaper, so that's the choice for houses. Stranded is used for any industrial or movable wiring because of the flexibility. As you said, welding cable and booster cables are stranded, but because of the need to be flexible. In all areas that it can be done, solid bars are used (even in the 28,000v transmission stations).
Anyway, to get back on track I used 30 feet of 4 conductor 12 ga cable to bring 2 x 15A 120v from my Generac (using the 220v twist plug) and it ran 2 sets of warmers no problem. STILL the damned thing was too loud so I picked up a used Honda and plug the warmers in directly, as others have said. The Honda is quieter right next to the bike than the Generac on the other side of the trailer. Live and learn.

Thanks for answering the question

I know it's totally off track, but read this. It has everything to do with frequency. DC (frequency 0Hz) doesn't skin, AC does. The reason I said it's more important at higher frequencies is because the skin gets thinner as frequency goes up. At 60Hz the skin is thick enough that in "normal" sized cables that we're dealing with here it's inconsequential.

Thanks Doozer, even if it is Wikipedia! LOL. Anyway, your reference says the skin depth for 60Hz is 8.5 mm (maybe 0 gauge), and that's greater than the conductor thickness for extension cords. OK, so you made Eel's point that it's frequency related not voltage, I was wrong. But like I said, doesn't matter for this discussion. The only place I've seen "skin effect" discussed in real life is for power transmission applications. For extension cords it's more about cross sectional area of the copper, or wire gauge size. Sorry guys, should never have brought it up. Let's get back on topic.

Here's something interesting.. another company taking a run at Öhlins.

http://www.nitron.co.uk/Motorcycles

Seems as though they've been doing some pretty high end automotive stuff already.

They have been around for a while and make decent products but I dont think they will ever really be in the same league as Ohlins.

Why is everyone on ohlins nuts?

Anyways I got a one piece from a member here. Used once.

Because they've been around for a long time and their stuff works really well, so much so that everything is compared to it.

I like Ohlins nuts, they make me blush

I started with an ohlins rear, added newer forks with ohlins spring kit.....since swaped to ohlins forks and it was an incredible upgrade to the bike and my riding, highly recommended!!!!! Added attack triples, attack clip-ons, brembo narrow-band rotors, brembo hydrolic clutch and a STM slipper clutch this past season  Back on topic......motor is going in for more work, powder coating frame/etc, kit swing-arm, quick shifter and a motion-pro quick turn for starters for the 2014 season.

What did you get?
accosato, paint, spare bars, brake return spring, more stomp grips, Elka, and ohins springs. All that and it'll probably go on the ground first day out... -_-

I bought only a new front fender from Squidskins as I left mine somewhere around turn 6 at TMP... Not gonna buy anything else, at least not until I get down to 1:20 or less at that particular track with my current configuration. I've been pouring money in this bike with very little improvement. Recent visit to LA got me thinking about having a day or two with the California Superbike School at Willow Springs in March, so that's where my money will probably go.
