Shopping list for 2013 track season

When did we get Canadian Dunlops? As I said it was a matter of prefrence to what front was used, most guys used the medium. Sandy only had a handful of softs as opposed to 2 racks of mediums so I asked why, the reason was preference. Yes the soft will wear quicker and are very setup/pressure sensitive but once that's dialed I liked them a lot.

Then you're calling it on Sandy. Take it up with him, if you want, as he steered me towards the medium compound and Jonny was right there when he did it. Which is directly the opposite advice i got out of the Michelin and Pirelli guys. Mind you, for all intents and purposes the U.S.-manufactured tires we got last year were brand new and unknown to any riders, much less the Canadian ones. It's not like anyone had a huge amount of experience with the GPAs until the middle of this year.

You were using GPAs on a Superbike?

If it's below 25C there are only and hand full of riders in Canada that can keep a Soft or Medium Dunlop rear at ideal operating temp. I am not among them. Dunlop rears are very sensitive to temperature and when they fall off from ideal operating temp they tear very easily. The tricky part with Dunlops is that the grip doesn't fall off when they're off temp like other brands. The surace still grips but the carcass is not flexing properly which leads to tearing. If you run the medium+ rear it will not grip quite as well as the soft or medium but that small difference is enough to make tearing much less likely. The medium+ allows just enough tire spin to keep from overloading the surface and tearing.

FYI, same goes for Pirelli. I had a long talk with Kevin Graham about compounds and ambient temperatures. Harder tires are better for cold temperatures to avoid cold tearing damage, softer tires on hot days where they can be kept in their optimal temp zone. It seems a bit counter-intuitive at first, but it makes sense.

If you ride at the top end of the expert group, you will be on your head with one lap to warm the tires. I got down to 2:10 at Calabogie being gentle on the braking zones, that's some high speed cornering... you go right ahead and take corner 1 at 10K+ RPM in fifth (~210km/h or so, at a guess?), on your second lap. I think I'll stick with tire warmers. FYI I don't know your pace, but between intermediate and expert, pretty well all the time difference of 10-25 seconds is in corners (and to get to race pace means really hard braking).

Sure, they cool some... but the wheel and tire bands are heat-soaked, so they work better than if they weren't on the warmers anyway.

I think the person asking will not be near the 2:10 lap times you are mentioning.

I dont do bogie, but low 1:30's - 1:29's are not a problem at Mosport without warmers.

Im guessing the warm up characteristics between Bstones and Dunlops may be different as well?

Things are a little crazy for me now so I've deferred my suspension upgrade/delivery to January when I know I'll have time to pull everything off the bike during x-mas holidays. Going to get Sherrard to change the springs, oil and seals on the rear shock and forks. Here's hoping for 2013 smoothness lol

I know I'm retentive, but I'm planning to talk to several people about tire compounds of these recent tires now. Cold tearing doesn't necessarily mean grip problems (but definitely can)... but Dunlop also says that the soft tire is good for 5-8 laps in race conditions, so............................................. some research is in my future.

Honestly, at that price I would get it and put it as far away from everyone as possible.
That's CHEAP!

Well, I just bought the last one in the CT store I went to. One thing to note is that it's not really 1500w max / 1200w continuous power, there's a small print mentioning 1080watts is the maximum guaranteed continuous power or something like that. Still good for the tyresox I intend to buy. Maybe one day when I decide to get into racing, I'll buy better equipment, I hear everyone swears in Bickle warmers. Until then---track days, here I come on slicks or race tires, medium hardness compound :D

Well I can tell you with personal experience that in 25c-28c that I ran two sprints with a best lap time of 1:50 at Shannonville long track (personal best) without a single issue. I then used the same tire the next race weekend for every practice lap I did and turned a 1:10 pro track (also personal best). Ill still use it for a track day too, unless you wanna buy my scrubs?

Nah. I'm a second off your times just playing around at a track day on my old 1000 (used to be Joey McRae's, traded it this fall). That and I have a pile of scrubs that Fiset gave me with the 600 I traded him for.

I guess you'll just go straight to pro, and I was hoping we'd have more guys in am sbk.

I'm no expert, but what tire manufacturer would ever advertise and promote their tires to last less than the distance of a sprint race? There are so many factors, majorly rider level, that would come into account here.

Over the past 3 years, no tire other than a Dunlop has seen my bike. All the major tire manufactures make great tires, I just personally think Dunlop makes the best tire out there.

No tire manufacturer would ever say that because it's retarded.

I watched Sean Huffman run consistent 1:02s (lap record pace) on Fabi for an entire 14 lap race.. On a soft KR108 and it still looked mint after the race. So.....

No Caboose, you saw wrong! Shaman said, Dunlop said, they're only capable of race pace for 5-8 laps, after that the times will drop off!

Read it right on Dunlop's site for one of their track layout recommendations.

On the subject of going pro, I don't even plan to do a series, just some events, but if we''re going to trade jabs lets just figure out when we can do a RACE sprint and get it on paper. I suspect I'll do my sprints in mid summer.

You saying you run my personal best times just "playing around" was the first jab. But seeing as how it was my second season on the track and first year on a 1000 I would assume you could, it was for reference towards your lack of knowledge to the Dunlop softs that I posted my pace, not to be macho. Ill be at Shannonville next year, I'm sure we'll get to say hello.

Those KRs are badass..... I bought a soft set from Dave Noble/Competition cycle with 20 laps on them..... after 2 track days the front is still mint and the rear has another day on them. Mind you, I'm no black number but I can hold a decent pace mid-pack.

Hmmm. Ok then. I look forward to it... seriously. I'll be on the (new to me) 600 but I'm willing to enter the 1000 class on it so no worry. I just want to ride with some fast riders more than actually compete. Track days are great ... but I find the level of riders to seldom be challenging to ride with at Shannonville events. Calabogie is another story (and mosport this year is too.)
