Shooting in Connecticut

And how likely is your scenario in this country? I want anti-aircraft missiles in case aggressive aliens decide to come visit. Both scenarios seem as likely to me. What you're describing is the culture of fear that the americans have had for years and has led them down the road they now inhabit almost entirely on their own.

Home invasions happen. People get raped, murdered, robbed. Aliens haven't been proven yet, so anti-aircraft missiles is a bit of a stretch.

I would feel safer to have a child in a home with a hand gun locked in a safe in the parents bedroom over the parents having a knife stashed under the bed in the chance of an intruder.

I think some americans go over board with their "preparations" as it is a relatively low risk, but you can't take away someone's right to defend themselves on an even playing field.

but you can't take away someone's right to defend themselves on an even playing field.

I think maybe you can, as unjust as it sounds on the face of it. I think faster1 made a good point in that regard.

Help me understand your primary concern then. You feel what you have can be eroded? That's why you're defending your "side"?

We should be talking to the criminals in this thread but they don't seem to be posting. Personally I don't have a big beef with the status quo but, again, if you start arguing for the right to arm everybody in anticipation of a possible home invasion or some other spectacular event that changes my view on your "practicaly accomplished tasks".

My accomplished tasks is food on the table and going out and safely enjoying a sport that I grew up with. I live in practically zero fear of a gun being used against me here in Canada. But, if something like that ever did happen, I wouldn't be completely helpless.

I feel that not everyone should be armed. Same way that I feel not everyone should hold a driver's license.

And yes, I feel that what I have could be eroded. The people in Canada that don't really understand the laws we already have in place will assume that since the states is in an uproar about this that we should be as well simply because people in general are mindless. I'm all for more control in the states, but my worry is that idiots up here will think we need stricter regulations on what we already have here.

For an example, I'm going to a range this weekend. A few people are bringing restricted weapons and they have to notify the RCMP that these guns will be moving from their home to the certain range and then back within a certain time frame on that date. No deviations from a direct route to and from will be allowed. That's pretty restrictive as it is I would think.

I think maybe you can, as unjust as it sounds on the face of it. I think faster1 made a good point in that regard.

And I would say that is a direct insult on my right as a human being. If I'm deemed capable and responsible to own a certain object then I should be allowed a certain object.

If I were to in the future commit any type of violent crime, even being in a fight in a bar, that is grounds for me to possibly loose my possessions as it shows I may not have the responsibility to own such an item. As such, I will think twice before I start anything.

Then that would put you in the full retard camp for....

1. Believing in alien invasion. Is that what the Anti camp has been reduced to? Really??? Fear of aliens as a legit argument?

2. Thinking that wanting AAM's, which are illegal for Canadians to buy is the same as buying (legally) a firearm.

But I suppose you think nobody has ever been killed in a home invasion in Canada. They were just abducted by the Greys.....

It's really quite simple. If you don't like firearms, don't buy them. That's your right. It's also your right to get up in the face of other people for buying them even though it doesn't effect you at all. Just like the Chistfans that wave their "god hates fags" signs have the right to wave their hate.

I really don't see a difference between them and you any more. :(

And I would say that is a direct insult on my right as a human being.

Of course it is. But you have to deal with the world as it is, not as you wish it to be. There's such a thing as a greater good. Everything in this world is a compromise. A balancing of agendas. That's just the way it is. I could name a ton of insults on my right as a human being. The #1 insult atm is that I can't do #2 in the backyard w/o the neighbours freaking. We all have our crosses to bear.

Think what you want but if you want to join the "I should do XXXXXXX because of the possibility of YYYYYYY" no matter how small the possibility of Y is IN THIS COUNTRY then I have to question your intelligence and ability to rationaly identify threats. Furthermore, I'm not in the "ban" camp, I'm also not in the "scared of the boogeyman" camp....and you should also ask if my opinion would change if I lived in the US....and it might.

Maybe another example would help:

I pack for a trekking holiday in a tropical country..if I packed everything I was legally allowed to take that would account for every possibility of every occurrence that might conceivably take place I'd have to hire sherpas.

If your excuse for wanting weapons is to defend against the possibility of (home) invasion then in my mind, in this country, you are living in irrational fear at a level where you should also be afraid of storms and the possibility of being hit by lightning. If you're doing so because you want to defend your home because of a state invasion then you are at the level of alien invasion preparation and you need to duct tape up your arsehole to prevent probing and invest in Alcan stocks to wrap your home in tin foil.

I have time on my hands right now so I'll add something else...

I'm seriously considering getting a shotgun for skeet shooting and a handgun for target shooting as I enjoy both. However, the primary consideration is for both the activities I mention. If at some point the law deemed that I had to keep those weapons in a central armoury somewhere for example, this would be an inconvenience but not a world ending problem. I do not feel the need to keep firearms in my home soley for defensive purposes as my assessment of the threat posed to me for a situation whereby I might need those firearms is negligible. I base that assessment from living in three countries, two in very dodgy areas and one where I regularly heard gunfire at night.

Seriously. I'm a fairly big guy. I'm a "trained killer" who trains the Combat Arms how to be better killers. I live in a buttphuck town on a street with ~ 20 other Army Dinks on both sides and across from me and I have no family to worry about. I have absolutely no fear of home invasion. I don't lock my door when I'm home and I don't have a home invasion plan.

That's me and I think it's kind of funny when people ask whats the best gun for home defense, here in BF nowhere or when I read it on a forum where people ask the same and then google their town and find no history of any home invasion ever happening there.

I still believe if they are scared then it's their right to defense, so I don't laugh in their face. I just tell them to buy a shotgun and learn how to operate it.

So, there is you (I'll assume) and me with little to worry about but at the same time there are people that are frail or worried about their children that might take that precaution to defend then from threats real or imagined. Especially those in shitholes like Winipeg, parts of Van and some parts of TO.

At least we aren't talking about bullet proof backpacks for our kids to go to school with. :)

Yet....

Again. Let people do what they want. As long as it doesn't effect you. Just sit back and laugh to yourself about it.

I'll agree with the live and let live theme but with one question that you can better answer more than anyone else.....who would you rather have (trust) with a weapon nearby, someone who is scared, frail and perhaps a little paranoid....or someone who isn't?

I'll preempt your answer and then add that to get to the "isn't scared and paranoid" stage, you need some training (which maybe not all people would pass) and perhaps some screening (which maybe again, not all would pass)...which would mean some form of gun control which is really all that's being asked by many people right now in the US.

If they are inside their own house it doesn't matter to me. However, if they started CCW here, I would tend to be less confident in the ability of others to shoot as a last line of defense vs. shoot at anything that may be a threat.

And no, I left Kingston this past summer. :(

I rather liked it there.

Why are you anti-gun?

What kind of background growing up did you come from? And aside from the things you hear in the media, what bad personal experiences do you have with fire arms?

.

OK a kid took a shot at me with a hunting rifle that was carelessly left loaded and leaning against a wall. Would that count as a reason for me to have an opinion? He thought it was a toy and fortunately for me was a bad shot.

When I say I'm anti gun I mean that I prefer the minimum number of guns in the country not the maximum as desired by the NRA.

I'm not into hunting but have no problem with safe responible hunters. I like the concept of bow hunting but I question the suffering of the animal. Since I have no interest in taking up either I don't intend to waste good riding time doing endless research on the subject.

My biggest problem with guns is the chance that we could develop the American attitude. ie If the only tool you have is a hammer you see every problem as a nail. or as Bubba says "If you ain't sure then just shoot it."

I have zero problems with responsible hunters.

Farmers who may have to deal with four legged vermin need a way to access their firearms quickly but not have them accessable to the wrong people (My situation)

I have serious reservations about the Walter Mitty types that want to play hero.

Re people who use a weapon in self defense, I would like to see the event reviewed in a way not unlike the SIU investigates a police shooting. If there was no practical alternative no charges would be laid, therefore no trial, legal expenses etc.

Too fair, reasonable and balanced. Probably direct insult to right of human being.

^ well said D23.

I wonder what's a higher risk in Canada and US? Home invasion injury/death or self injury/death by accidental gun discharge?

Ok, so you're not 100% anti-gun which is what I assumed you meant when you said anti-gun.
I can get why you feel the way you do, and you're right to feel that improperly stored guns need to be dealt with (ie charges laid, loss of the priveledge to own etc.)
I came across an old single shot shotgun in a Barn of a family member's, just sitting there next to the back door and with a round in the chamber. I unloaded it and told him what I found and that he better lock it up. And fyi he's older and in his 70s and fairly old school. My biggest concern is that some one would visit the farm with a younger kid that would likely find it and you never know what could come next. Apparently he had it in there so he had quick access to get rid of hawks that were attacking his free range chickens.

My biggest fear with all of this is the spill over in to Canada that could follow and the affect it would have on the millions of us legal owners.
I remember the bill C-68 (long gun registration) and how hard we all fought that and we lost, despite how hard it was pushed that it was a waste of time and was a large invasion of privacy. Look at what happened when we weren't listened to. Nothing but a waste of billions of dollars because the majority was brain washed. I wasn't age of majority at that time, and it was really frustrating to see it all happen.

I would really hate to lose what I have, and I know that if laws changed and my guns were to be confiscated that I wouldn't receive back the money I've put in to it, which would also have to include all of my other hunting equipment since it would be essentially useless... That's thousands of dollars just for what I personally own and I'm fairly mild kit wise as a hunter.

And FYI, with archery, the arrows fly so fast and they are so sharp (scalpel sharp) that the pain isn't what you would expect. If you've ever cut yourself on something that sharp, you'll know the pain isn't what you would think it would be. They essentially bleed out. If done right it's fast.

Incidentally I was opposed to the long gun registry because it was so blatently a political unthought out farce. The billions of wasted dollars were just poisoned gravy on top.

Those in favour of the registry claim it saved lives and the cost was worth the few lives. How many lives would have been saved if the billions were spent on a new hospital, more police, more education? I'm guessing a lot more. Education is the best safety device.

You hunt with assault rifles? you couldn't hunt with anything other than an assault rifle? Or are you talking about a gun ban that no one is talking about?

I am not saying I am in favour of banning anything, but I don't understand your comment at all.

Sorry , this is a spin off topic but I saw that bullet proof backpack and nearly cried. My kids are grown so school no longer worries me and to think an amoured pack would ever even be a considerration makes me very sad.
What a sad country .
