could be far worse
UK MOT annual inspection
Google it
Try Germany. They have "log books" for vehicles, like Britain, and EVERYTHING has to be in log and approved.
A buddy was visiting his mom, and put the snow tires on her van and went for a drive, got pulled over and was ticketed because the van had rims from a different year van that weren't in the log book. They were the wrong color, same rim, different color. The ticket was around 100 euro, in the late '90s. He would have no problem at all getting the rims approved, but he hadn't got them approved. He painted them black, DONE.

That's like certified plane documentation here. Except you aren't allowed to touch anything unless you are a certified AME. Makes everything super expensive but if log books are in good shape and an inspection doesn't turn up missed issues, you have high confidence in the vehicle.

And people are moving to Europe because Canada is a fascist state….🤦🏻‍♂️

I don’t think they understand how strict some EU nations are. You don’t see those rules and regulations during a vacation.

A safety is mostly a loser for a shop. Calls for an hour, and takes an hour, with no parts to markup. Some shops will use it as a fishing expedition. It's a quick indication of the shop's integrity.
When your shop's reputation is shady safeties.....
I am the opposite to most safety customers. I want an inspection, as thorough an inspection as I can get. I don't mind if they overlook the el-cheapo Amazon tail lights that aren't 11.5" from the centerline of the bike, but I do want the actually mechanical safety inspection that I'm paying for.

So what's worse, someone who does a no-look safety, or someone who tells you they're going to do a proper inspection and then does a no-look (and probably charges more)? Hey, if I could find someone to do an honest job, I wouldn't have a garage full of tools.

I know that in Poland all vehicles need to pass an annual safety. I am not sure how strict the guidelines are but it needs to be done annually.
And there is no temporary grace period to have any repairs done if it fails the initial safety. Vehicle needs to be deemed safe the renewal date of said safety certificate.

Neither are acceptable. Maybe you're looking in the wrong places ?

Obviously. But there are only so many motorcycle shops in the GTA. The closest I've come is Ken at Ken's Motowerks (or however it's spelled), and before that, Guy Martin in Quebec. I'm not dragging my bike more than 30 minutes for a safety, though, especially if I have to leave it come back for it another day.

I use blueskin 6" tape instead of flashing behind butt joints in siding. Start tape on the top inch of the row below the butt, then stick it to the firring beneath the butt joint.

Good luck Kev!

...and I told him NO, I am still looking for a Laverda. He said he owns a Laverda, so I told him he was an *******. I explained to him that anyone that owns a bike I want, especially a Laverda, but don't have, is an *******. We LOL'ed. He asked me if I wanted to be an *******. I said yes, and went home with a Laverda SF and a safetied Norton.
So I am now a contented *******.

********* = slang for anal oriface
Hey btzz, you *******: Nice Norton. Pics of Laverda, please. :)

Oh s***, where am I going to get my $20 tire change now? Very upsetting news

Nova Scotia used to require annual safety inspections, although it's now only once every two years. For that reason, you don't see any vehicles with cracked windshields driving around. I think the fee is $30, so the shop isn't making any money on those.

Sure they are. By the time they force a set of tires and some other random crap on you, they are making a lot. They are free to extort as all shops will do it so customers that get ****** and don't come back are replaced by customers that got ****** at other shops.

Yup. When we had mandatory emissions testing here, I refused to go to any place that wasn't a "test-only" facility for exactly that reason.

Yup, the guy doing our inspections was a real friend of the family. I think a lot more people have an actual relationship with their mechanic for this reason.

For future references. Where is the right place?
In St Marys. These guys have done safeties on over a dozen bikes for me. They found stuff I should not have missed but did - missing master link clip, improperly routed throttle cable.
They tell me what if anything it needs and never anything it doesn't. No fishing no extortion just great service from stand up guys.

It's a small town. You don't survive this long by screwing people over.

I'd be happy to find a competent mechanic to be a friend and get my business. I knew of two, neither one is still alive.
