Recent movies you saw - recommend or no

Lynch likes his shocker/misshapen moments....Twin Peaks for example.

Twin Peaks is shocking? On what planet?

The Covenant - enjoyed this one.

Matrix Resurrections - I tried to watch it but couldn't get into it. FF much of it looking for something decent but no.

Army of One - I knew this would be bad going into it so I had low expectations. It barely met those.

American Sniper - Pretty good watch. About what I expected.

Nobody has said anything about Oppenheimer yet? I went and saw it last week in IMAX - would have liked to see it in 70mm IMAX but I really didn't want to sit in the front rows, the good seats were all sold out.

It was alright! You may have heard that it can be difficult at times to understand the dialogue. That is correct! I found myself badly missing the ability to turn on subtitles, were I viewing it in a digital form at home. It is also three hours long - keep that in mind while you browse the options at the concession stand. There are some good moments in the film, and a couple that fell flat for me.

I am sure there are a whole bunch of things in there that are technically impressive to the craft, but... mainly one thing stood out to me. It's not a spoiler to say that the movie has a nuclear detonation in it! However:
When it happens, and you and the characters on screen see it happen, the movie delays the actual sound of the explosion for as long as possible. It takes minutes! It was a neat device that plays with your expectations

Was it the best possible entertainment value for my time and money? Nope! I guess I don't really regret satisfying my curiosity about the movie either though. How's that for an endorsement

The sound mixing has gotten so bad in movies, background music and effects consistently drown out the dialog.

It's so annoying that I've basically stopped going to the theaters and I wait for the movie to come out in streaming so I can turn on the subtitles at home.

Also, I don't have to put on pants... (the real reason)

I generally like a good Nolan flick, but as @Lightcycle points out nothing beats home comfort, and not having to be surrounded by yahoos, and people munching away. Movies these days would have to be the exception for me to drag my butt out to the theatre.

So no one went to see the Barbie movie? C'mon no one? (no I did not, that is not the exception, even with Margot Robbie)

I thought of a better way to quantify Oppenheimer - I am really glad I got to see Dunkirk in the theatre, and would definitely recommend that experience to anyone (unless you are at risk of a heart attack). Between the two, Dunkirk was definitely a superior theatre watch. Is that being fair to Oppenheimer? Probably not! It was never billed as an edge of your seat movie, and they almost certainly made a movie about Robert Oppenheimer as exciting as it possibly could be

If anyone is looking for a very dark comedy, then I would recommend the Carey Elws movie "A Bit of Bad Luck." (2014). And not just because my friend Scott actually punched Elwes in it. Maybe because he did it while wearing a kilt? Seriously, Elwes told Scott to actually hit him., to sell the scene. I also know most of the "frat boys" at the party cabin, who are all too old to be considered frat boys. One of them, Conner Marx, just finished up a run on "New Amsterdam."

The sound editing in Dunkirk was incredible.
That first sniper shot in the opening scene - wow.

And that ticking clock…

I've noticed millenials like to watch tv with subtitles on even when the dialogue is in english. I find them very annoying. They're ok for foreign films and maybe if there's a lot of heavy accent. (I wear hearing aids so sometimes accents cause me to miss stuff )

And yeah Dunkirk was awesome in the theatre

I saw Barbie last week and it was not at all what i was expecting.
Parts of it were too over the top[Will Farrell character] but lots of fun with some poignant scenes.
I thought it was terrific.

I am convinced she has a CGI mouth 🤪

I'll see Barbie when it streams. I like musicals and like both leads.

Oppenheimer will be a struggle this Saturday for 3 hours in a wheel chair plus travel time.
Having just about completed the biography American Prometheus I should be better equipped for the dialogue.
I'm in EW3...angled but close

I highly enjoyed the movie. The man was horrible to his performers from what I’ve read, but the movie was good and glossed over his story from my understanding.
