Re: the titanic submersible issue

OceanGate beat the official press briefing. All "believed to be dead". Wtf. There are parts of the pressure vessel scattered on the bottom of the ocean. That's stupid wording. Wankers to the end.

EDIT:
Official coast guard release. Pressure vessel failed catastrophically. Wreckage 1600' from bow of Titanic. As expected press is dumb. "What are the plans for the recovery of the bodies". I don't think they understand pressure at at all.

Nose cone, end bell/door, aft bell found. As expected, carbon tube is awol.

He was like musk. All ego and bravado. Don't worry, we have computers, it is safe, trust me. It didn't even look like there was a manual release for the weights. You pressed the elevator button to drop them and ascend. No angry pixies, no elevator button. Pretty much the design guide for Autopilot and Full self-driving. Whoops, killed someone, will change that code soon. Deaths in the pursuit of the future are reasonable.
How is that like Musk?

I don't understand. Public face of Autopilot and Full-self driving is hands off. Fine print says it is beta-testing. It should not be in public yet. It has trouble identifying motorcycles, it has trouble with emergency vehicles with flashing lights (and aims for them). It belongs in private proving grounds getting better before release. As a minimum they should get rid of all lane following to force the driver to pay attention and leave the auto stuff as a backup to alert the driver if it sees an issue. Humans are completely useless at paying attention with nothing to do. Pretending that a human is in control while the computer does all the work is by definition a complete failure. His branding of it proves how much is ego driven and how far away from reality he lives.

@FullMotoJacket , I don’t think even new money would be silly enough to try race a ferrocement boat , they were all home builds and largely awful.

Simon Lebon owned DRUM , an expensive race boat they managed to sink in the Fastnet race , race out the Solent around the fastnet rock off Ireland and home . He then commissioned a big catamaran and scared the crap out of himself a second time . It’s not far offshore but it’s serious business .

Wondering what the source of the sound they was listening to every half hour

Bits of the Titanic banging together or bits of the sub doing it. Not sure they actually said it was every half hour, if it was a distress call it was supposed to be every half hour.

The military has been using autopilot for years, I don’t agree with it but I also fail to understand how this makes one of the smartest men in the world “the face of autopilot”? Or how it remotely connects him to these Richard Branson types.

Musk and Stockton Rush have both drastically oversold what they actually have. Airplane autopilot has almost zero relation to the "autopilot" in teslas. Pretending they are similar is exactly the problem. Richard Branson funded things he wanted to do and took calculated risks. These passengers had almost nothing related to Branson imo.

This didn't age well.

I thought we where talking about self driving cars? and how did the passengers become related to Musk and the sub creator?

Not sure if you're just a troll or obtuse. Stockton rush was the CEO of the doomed sub and made many decisions around design direction. He ignored safety in the quest for innovation (just like Musk and self-driving).

Back up to the big picture. The issue isn't the technical details of whatever it is that each company is building (which are quite different). The issue is the ego and bravado and attitude of the CEO, and the dismissal of the opinions of technical experts in their relevant fields.

The Challenger space shuttle explosion was another one.

Wow now your calling me names, Musk being involved in self driving cars (like a lot of people) hardly puts him in the same league as the sub designer, or Vise versa

I tell great stories at cocktail parties , cool trips and on the edge vacations at times . But I get to tell the story , not my kids about that time Pops blew himself up in the submersible .

I guess it will be up to the lawyers now.

Coast guard says background ocean noise based on analysis they had done. Maybe the 30 minutes happened to be a coincidence. It seems they only heard something a few times.

With multiple agencies actively searching, I wouldnt be shocked if it was strange reflections from other vessels/bouys active pings. When you dump a ton of noise sources into the ocean, you end up with a jumbled mess. Announcing that coordination was chaos and canada was focusing on US active pings is not the press release they want.
