Rc 390!

Just saw one today. Sounds like a lawnmower. An electric lawnmower.

They installed a new engine last night. Dave said they would likely tear the old one apart tonight to see why he "lost power". He wasn't cursing but he didn't answer me if there was a bill.

But then driving it to WI is expensive enough

His Dad told me they are on route to Road America this week, i guess there is a KTM place on the way to Wisconsin that will be installing a new motor in the bike in time for him to go racing next weekend, didn't sound like he was going to be billed for the repairs. He's Irish, i would have been able to tell if it was an out of pocket repair.

That's an admirable dedication, especially if it cost him something (even if they charged him only some labour) ... I would just call it a season. I like bikes, but not that much ...

I wonder what would be the insurance rate for this bike, it is 375cc (not 390), Ninja 250 and 300 have same rates, but stepping up slightly to 375 what will it be? Tthis is a new bike, not even listed in the Canadian registry yet. They have no track record of accident rates, how will they determine what the rate is?

Good question, I was wondering why a Ktm RC8R (1190) is like 20 bucks a month cheaper than my Cbr 1000. My insurance (state farm) goes by CC.

The young Rider is very talented and it would be a waste to just call it a season, specially when you just spent a crap load of money buying the bike with only one purpose, and booked vacation and made plans etc.... They are good people, I am glad they kept on going.

As soon as the problem was diagnosed Dave was on the horn with KTM NA. With the RC Cup going this year, KTM and MotoAmerica want as many riders from all around in the race. The bike was pretty much completely rebuilt by Ulrich Toporsch, the KTM crew chief and head mechanic. KTM was treating them really well from what I've heard.
Jordan will be doing practice sessions tomorrow at Road America then there are two races one on Saturday and one on Sunday. I think they'll be streamed on the MotoAmerica website.

They are good people. And that's lots of money spent. What's the old expression tho'? "In for a penny. In for a pound". Hopefully J keeps it upright and does well.

Bike was rebuilt??? ... or you meant engine rebuilt? The labor costs must be higher than throwing in a new engine puppy. Surprised that they would rebuild, but from another point of view, it's probably safer. Who knows what a new engine would do, right? .... this way the Austrian guy did the job himself and knows that it will not be an assembly shady job. If it's a design issue as some people thinks I hear, it should not make a difference.

Its the RC cup version of the bike. Had to be specially ordered and imported into the country. Everything is race ready, race ecu, shocks, etc, etc. Engine is blueprinted, Ulrich rebuilt from scratch, then rebuilt and modified the suspension, then did gearing changes, and messed around with setup..
They had a shifter problem during practice this morning and are getting ready for the first race qualifier. Half the track was dry and half wet..making tire choice a nightmare. I think its starting to rain steady now so rains are being put on for the qualifier. The bike does look badass with the RC Cup decals on it. Times are pretty fast too. Top guy on the KTM is only 20 seconds off the top guy running 600 supersport.

I thought I read earlier in this thread that the cup version is lower on power than the street version (not that it made sense to me). Shouldn't that make it less likely to blow up?

All other things being equal, probably yes. Good catch.

Under power, the wear and strain on the motor is less, sure...
But throw in some exuberant downshifts.....

Ok, so you are talking about a bike rebuilt having nothing to do with engine failure. I thought a cup bike is a cup bike, not much is allowed to be done with.

Why would the engine be blue printed, if the power on the cup bike is limited below the max power of the production units. To increase reliability??
