Queen Elizabeth II :/

My argument remains the same. Quit it with the damned virtue signalling. Put your money where your mouth is and show people what meaningless gestures like this actually cost canadians. Even if it is federally regulated only, the cost to the country is probably on the order of an hours wages for every person in the country. Biggest political donation ever.

I don't disagree....
IMO... at this point in time... the royal family is not much different than the Kardashians.

Pack in the whole lot of fluff.

The press keeps reporting on the ginger and his loud mouth wife.
For the life of me I can't figure out WHY I'm supposed to care.
Can anyone here tell me?
Because Kardashians? Press likes light scandal to get clicks but not full-on scandal to shine light on the royal stink. I treat this the same way as the kardashians (or Max-Wrist). Never click anything. Hopefully enough people get on board that they disappear.

I'm on board with that sentiment. The royals are a waste of money. Can anyone offer up anything they do that's actually useful?
Shield the PM from scrutiny? Without GG allowing politicians to whack parliament whenever things got too hot there would be a hell of a lot more light shone on ugly situations.

I kind of liked Queen Liz but I'd chuck Chuck. Keeping the monarchy with her gone is like keeping spare parts for an obsolete bike you've scrapped. It's just shop litter.

Just this year I would bet.
We can hope. Another perpetual 0.5% drop in GDP doesn't help anyone. The moron in chief isn't known for making smart/reasoned/well thought through decisions. If he made it permanent, it would be hard for any future leader to unwind it without also cutting ties to the monarchy. That is a really high bar that I don't think any are up to.

We already have a day off on the 30th for CLC/fed regulated people plus labour day I doubt there will now be THREE in September in perpetuity.

*******
As for costs.... I argue the current system is actually more cost effective. We do not pay tribute to the crown, instead we pay when they are specifically representing Canada and of course the costs of the GG etc.

Adding an election for a president is a $300M cost every four years (rough fed election taxpayer costs). We pay in the area of $40M to $60M per year for the GG, crown, etc. but this is not their pay it includes the cost of travel, housing (Canada), staff, the cost to host dignitaries, foreign leaders, etc. which we will mostly pay monarchy or republic (so this value is misleading). So we add $300M every four years to get a say on "who" but still also have to pay most of that $60M per year anyway???? Even if we could save the entire $60M (not possible we will only shift the line items to other departments) that is $240M over four years vs $300M for the election. BTW most functional republics have the equivalent of a PM and a President which one is week and strong differs. There are functional reasons for this.

One argument is that we just have a PM and no President to replace the role of the crown.... I don't want Trudeau to have more power, do you????

BTW it is a good question for PP.... as Conservatives support the crown more than the left.

I would argue the GG as currently implemented exists at the whim of the PM and has zero power. They won't be appointed to their position unless they take their turn under the desk to prove their loyalty. Things might be different if the crown dropped in a chosen representative with no input from our elected gov't. When was the last time a GG turned down a request made by a PM?

Why would president be a separate election? Why arent we questioning why voting costs almost $10 a citizen (about double that per vote)?

They typically overlap PMs as they serve different terms. As for turning down, the term is too strong in any current context but off the top Michaëlle Jean added conditions to proroguing parliament (reconvene and passable budget on return) for Harper and did not just give him what he wanted 100%. They never say "no" but instead say but in the background. There was also crown related hoops for Mulroney to get the GST through.... It is the same for most week President systems BTW. But it is one of the main plays to be a dictator, get both position for yourself or eliminate one.

People did not like the appointee to be on the sole decision of the crown (once was) and that is why we do what we do now. There was a move, in I think the 30s, that the GG for each realm would be from a different realm.... didn't happen.

There are many reasons to have a separate head of state and head of government.... we do now, as a republic it will just cost more to now elect one (state).

As for costs, just checked and my election number was very old, last one was $500.8M! ):
