Queen Elizabeth II :/

She was an institution and will be missed. A vision of grace and poise blessed with natural kindness. Now, I have no use for the silly monarchy and royalty.

The Queen is dead, long live the Republic.

RIP Queen Elizabeth.

She was an amazing monarch (and I'm NO monarchist; that's for sure). How does anyone follow that class act?
She's been a part of most of our lives and the only Monarch we've even known.

After the appropriate period of mourning, I hope Canada will start planning an exit from the commonwealth. I no longer see the point in being associated with the Monarchy. Not holding my breath that Trudy will move in that direction though :cautious:

RIP Queen Elizabeth.

Agree on all fronts.

PM needs the GG so he can hide behind them when he gets in trouble and pretend he wasnt pulling the strings.

RIP Queen Elizabeth.

We need someone's face on our coinage that isn't a part of our political brain washing system.

I say just leave QEII on there or put some Canadian wildlife like a polar bear.

RIP Queen Elizabeth.

I also doubt he will or even wants to but historically the PC/Reform/CPC were the more pro monarchy parties and the Liberals and NDP not as pro (but not anti either). Personally the current system while not perfect works good enough for me so I do not see a need for change or to spend money on the change at this point. My understanding any change requires all provinces to agree at the same time which may never happen. IME the left tends to have more anti monarchy people than the right in Canada but neither is exclusive. I do not see any of them in their current form to be anti in general, just a higher percentage the more left it gets.

Some actions point....In the 60s the Liberals got rid of the Canadian Red Ensign and switched to our new flag to distancing us from the UK (this also included changes to the military ensigns, removing the union jack). They also removed the royal designations from the RCN and RCAF. They removed many British traditions from out military, specially the navy. They unofficially changed us from God Save The Queen to O'Canada---but this wasn't really "official" to I think 1980ish and the new anthem was in use before this point--so not a hard and fast change like the flag. Then the 1982 Constitution Act (under PET) which one could argue as good to do but it did cut some remaining strings to the UK. Of course there was also PET's infamous pirouette...

Harper to his credit corrected the royal designations and brought back some of the military traditions like the executive curl. The CPC put it right in there constitution: “2.1.9 A belief in our constitutional monarchy, the institutions of Parliament and the democratic process.”
