Make a case for your side.

I believe that we should have capital punishment, and it should be swift, as well.
none of this prison for 15 years, then execution.
If a jury decides that capital punishment is warranted, the execution should be within 30 days, or something like that

obviously, there would be rules written on when the punishment is deserved. like maybe pre-meditated type stuff.

The biggest NO I can give!!!

How many innocent people on death row have been found not guilty with new scientific methods?

Yes.And throw the pedophiles in there too.

I don't believe we will ever have a justice system reliable enough that can assure perfectly accurate convictions. The risk of executing an innocent is not worth it.

almost 1400 executions carried out since 1973, and there might have been a few innocent ones in there.

but lets face it.. this isnt the movies, the police arent really out railroading people just to look good for an execution.
If the police are looking at you for a murder, theres a pretty good chance you're not the the best citizen out there.
if a Jury has seen the evidence and decided that it was enough, thats good for me.

Agreed. I don't think that the risk of executing innocent people is a strong argument. There are plenty of innocent people charged and are serving time. You will never have a foolproof system but as someone has mentioned, there are enough scientific methods to help cases nowadays.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating hanging left right and centre but I'm pretty sure there could be a hybrid system in place where some crimes(I.e child molesters, repeat sex offenders etc) can have the capital punishment apply. This would be after a jury rules the charger guilty. No matter what anyone says, capital punishment will deter crime, it lowers the risk of repeats and reduced tax dollars spent.

For the odd case in which there is really no doubt as to a person's guilt... high profile ones that spring to mind would be Magnotta, Bernardo, Homolka... or if there is ever a Canadian version of Breivik

Magnotta for example.. I'm sure he loved all the attention, and I'm sure he's still loving it. End it and move on so people don't feed into it

Something to consider for this argument: Dr. Charles Smith. Remember that a jury is not a team of experts, you bring in experts like this guy for their opinions on evidence. He's a doctor, he's probably right ... right?

im still ok with a mistake here and there. Yeah it sounds horrible, i know.

I still think that it will deter crime,.. and im liking the idea of the pedo's, and other horrific crimes going with the death penalty.

Doesn't seem to be working too well in the states.

Is this even a discussion anymore? Virtually every western country, except for the states, has abolished the death penalty. Just look at the world map here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Use_of_capital_punishment_by_country. The only European country to still allow it is Belarus.

I believe that Canada Using the death penalty will absolutley deter crime.
the murder rates and violent crime rates for canada isnt really all that high, when comparing it on a global scale, and I think that introducing this type of punishment would decrease those numbers quite substantially.

Besides what you think, do you have any factual numbers to support the idea that capital punishment deters violent crime?

Even if it did, which I doubt. Haven't we as a society evolved past the idea of an eye for an eye?

nope, no numbers to support it.
and I am tired of the bleeding hearts that talk about us as a society that is supposed to be better. yadda yadda

we need to get away from punishing the rest of society, and focus more on punishing criminals. no more youth criminal justice act, no time off for good behavior, no rehab for inmates
jail is jail. its meant to be a punishment. and if you commit a serious enough crime, you get the ultimate punishment

You should move to the states, you'll fit right in with their mindset :)

I can get behind harsher jail conditions of course, but the death penalty, no way!

Until its your father, brother, mother, son, daughter, whomever you hold dear in your life that gets sentenced to death for a crime they didn't commit.
