Please sign my petition to allow straight pipes in Ontario for rider safety

Not signing a loud pipes petition. I don't understand why, even if noise saved lives, it needs to be exhaust noise. And this is from someone who loves a "tasteful" exhaust note on any vehicle.

I WOULD sign a petition to allow filtering.

I've been riding on the roadways since 1984. Time after time, loud pipes have saved me from near fatal collisions from oblivious drivers both on my sport and cruiser bikes. Factory horns are not loud enough to hear in a car, especially with music turned up, distracted drivers texting or talking on their cell phones, hearing impaired drivers or inexperienced drivers. It lacks common sense for lawmakers to determine that a horn will get a drivers attention over loud pipes. Considering the bodily harm caused to riders over drivers in a collision, this law is not only ridiculous but works against the best interests of motorcyclists. A loud crack from a straight/drag pipe immediately gets a driver's attention and acts as a back up safety precaution for motorcyclists. Ask a rider with factory pipes or even straight pipes how many close calls they've had because drivers not only don't see them but don't hear them.

Please support this endeavor and sign this petition to support legalizing straight pipes in Ontario to prevent motorcycle fatalities and protect the lives of all motorcyclists on the road. I am looking for a goal of 100,000 signatures and hope to set a precedent in Ontario that will be a basis to change laws all over Canada and the US. Your support is appreciated.

Loud pipes lose rights and damage brains.. This is the most ridiculous request I've ever read on GTAMC

Learn how to ride defensively not make a bunch of noise!!!!

It has been my experience that the very same people with "LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES" stickers on their bikes, also have stickers that say "HELMET LAWS SUCK...and they often ride in the daytime without headlights.
SOmehow, they believe their mufflers are going to do more for their safety than their headlights and helmets?

SOrry. Umm no.

... and often on bikes with questionable steering and braking characteristics ... (see post #41 in this thread for an example)

I didn't read the thread, but I signed. Loud pipes DO save lives, or at least my life. *unsubscribed*

I think you're on the right track. This senseless slaughter on the street needs to stop. Us bikers are people too. While straight pipes have proven effective over the last one hundred years I believe regular people are starting to become oblivious to them.
For example, observe a regular joe (non biker trash) enjoying a quiet meal with his family in a tranquil outdoorsy setting like sidewalk patio.
As we fags ride by in our "safe" cocoon of cockaphony one can barely detect the grinding of teeth any more. Is anybody listening? I mean, how safe are we really?
In this day and age we should be able to engineer a simple sound amplification insert for the straight pipe. That would sort things out right quick, so much so, maybe we could petition the government abolish those pesky neck snapping helmets.
choppergirl, maybe one of your bad biker brethren could drag his knuckles over to the bench grinder/beer fridge station and cobble a prototype. Target 135db. You never know, maybe a booming cottage industry could be on the horizon. I'll pm you my contact deets for the royalty cheques.

And you don't see them wearing anything hi-viz to be more visible either. The whole loud pipes save lives argument is just an attempt for those attention seeking members of the motorcycle community to justify their loud bikes. I don't think many of them really believe that it's a safety issue because they would be taking further measures to seen as well. I'm glad to see that the majority seems to think this petition is ridiculous and refuse to sign.

Just like car alarms

Straight pipes on all ambalances and fire trucks. They save lives now, imagine how many they could save at 135 dB.

OP should start a petition to improve driver training. No loud pipe, air-horn, flame-thrower or rocket launcher is going to stop accidents happening from distracted drivers. Improved driver training, and a shift in the mindset of distracted drivers to not be distracted will.

That loud 'crack' wakes them up and gets their attention when I see them about to cut me off or turn in front of me. It's more important to live to see another day, not become a new hood ornament.

well if you see someone about to cut in front of you, my suggestion would be to Slow, maybe use the brakes, or swerve. Yours is to gun the engine? Sounds counter productive to an evasive manuver, and if they have the windows up, and sterio on, your loud pipes wont mean a thing.

Here is some more irony from the loud pipes saves lives clan.

http://news.yahoo.com/ny-motorcyclist-dies-ride-protesting-helmet-law-143217859.html

Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Cabin acoustics have made quite a few advances over the years and stereos have gotten louder and also added speed adaptive/ambient noise adaptive technology.

Joe Nutbar in his moderately priced sedan is effectively sealed in his killing machine oblivious to the world around him including you on your stretched Hardly Evergoes with straight pipes, while he texts and nods along to justin bieber while weaving between lanes, .

Learn to avoid him because there's not much you can do to to make him avoid you.

I just now read a story about that fellow in NY who died in that protest. Here it is for anyone who wants well-written read.

http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/07/behind_the_motorcycle_helmet_p.html

Sad story, but a decision he made and a fate he died with.

But it was a good article, that not only pointed out the irony of it all, but also helped to celebrate Phil Contos the man, and who he was, and what he had done in his life.

I never gave much thought to him other than the fact that he was now the poster child for helmet safety. Now I just feel a little sad about him.
