Please sign my petition to allow straight pipes in Ontario for rider safety

Gonna have to agree with the others. I'd sign a petition for greater motorcycle awareness on the MTO tests, greater motorcycle training requirements, greater driver training and licensing requirements, actual enforcement of aggressive and stupid moves by cars and motorcycles (like not checking blind spots, tailgating, etc)., and mandatory full-body certified gear requirement.

I'd say that there's a lot more to do for rider safety before legalizing straight pipes. The current municipal by-law noise requirements are pretty good as they are; if you fail the current test your pipes are too loud (if test administered correctly).

I was thinking some more about this whole annoying thing and thought I'd add this.

An interesting factoid for me occurred a couple of weeks ago while driving my car. I was behind two morons with straight pipes for about 5 minutes until I decided their annoying me was not to be tolerated and I would be damned if I was gonna pull over and wait for them to get into the next time zone so I wouldn't have to hear them.

Instead, I blasted by them at high speed in a fairly risky pass in a potentially dangerous spot, but I got in front of them and didn't have to listen to them anymore.

Now, considering I am usually a pretty cautious driver but was willing to endanger all three of us (more them, to tell the truth) to get away from their noise, it got me to wondering just how much safer they made themselves with their loud pipes. They had made me indifferent to whether they lived or died.

And, yes, I realize my driving was not acceptable and I was wrong. That is not my point. My point is, I believe many other people may do equally or more dangerous things as a result of this crap. And I wonder how that factors into the moronic debate.

And, to be honest, I am over dramatizing my story. It wasn't that dangerous a pass. The point is still valid though.

this is very similar to my experience with the "safety conscious" drivers who think travelling at 10 below the speed limit is a good idea. They only cause frustration and dangerous passing behaviour.

Screw the pipes!... let's just do open headers instead :toothy8:

With every cause, you will definitely have your critics but I am surprised to read some of these comments that sound more like the rantings of prejudiced non riders. Come on. You may be right about certain ignorant individuals who ride ALL STYLES of bikes, but let's stick the facts at hand and not trash people.

Some people who ride with straight pipes are inconsiderate with their pipe noise i.e. revving at lights, gunning it through tunnels and underpasses, making excessive noise through a neighborhood late at night, etc. I personally don't condone that behavior and believe in being polite. It is not the point of this petition.

What I'm talking about is after 35 years of riding and 29 years on roadways, I have enough experience and expertise to state that loud pipes do in fact save lives when faced with a distracted driver riding alongside or turning out in front of you. I've seen it, lived it. I do understand the physics of pipes that face to the back and noise travel. That loud 'crack' wakes them up and gets their attention when I see them about to cut me off or turn in front of me. It's more important to live to see another day, not become a new hood ornament. I won't apologize or back down from anyone who wants to debate that loud pipes are effective in that situation in addition to safety equipment, courses, etc etc. Even with the negative feedback I've read, my darlings, all the driver training in the world won't help you if they suddenly cut into you because they can't hear/see you. I am seeking to lower the odds of that happening.

So to re-iterate, I am not promoting legalization of straight pipes to give riders permission to scare the crap out of people or seek attention by being obnoxious. That would be excessive, unnecessary noise and owning a motorcycle does not come with the right to break the noise pollution laws. Those who choose to show no respect to others unnecessarily should be penalized. What I am asking for is the legalization of straight pipes for safety as a warning to drivers. Of course, there would need to be stipulations but I beleive the HTA is antiquated in areas and should be re-addressed and updated.

Where's the petition for the opposite? Higher fines for straight pipes.

The only time I ever notice them is when they're rattling windows through the city or they're in front of me. Straight pipes beside me? Don't really hear them. Even less behind me. How about we just increase penalties for side swiping people or improve driver education? It's not a hard concept to know you are supposed to check your mirrors and blind spot before you lane change.

I would not want to be living on that street when the biker with straight pipes returns home at 2am or so.
Would you?

I agree with this completely. When i come to a red light and theres a car next to me and their window is open, when the light turns green i twist my throttle gently so i dont make the driver beside me have ringing ear drums for the rest of the day. Sure theres times where i like to somewhat abuse the sound when i see a guy/girl on the phone and cutting me off or swerving like idiots ill make sure to ruin their conversation with my pipes.

I agree with this as well. There's other steps to increase safety on motorcycles especially making gear a requirement and better enforcement of stupid behaviour on the road from all vehicles which generally cause accidents without their knowledge

Fortunately for the rest of us, the MTO will never take this seriously (petition or not) unless you're able to produce some sort of data to support your claims... something a bit more convincing than your self proclaimed '"expertise".

p.s. most third party research contradicts what you're asserting

Why cant you honk the horn instead of gunning the engine?

If their windows are closed and listening to music, I doubt they're gonna hear loud pipes unless they're behind you. If their windows are open, the horn should suffice.

There's no reason why a straight piped HD or imitation can't enter or leave a parking lot or simply back up to the curb with out needlessly gunning the throttle. Modern bikes run very well with no chance of stalling if operated properly. A chopped Triumph 650 with worn out Amals get a pass but you don't see a lot of those anymore.

So, instead of petitioning Transport Canada to require better horns, this is the best that could be thought up?
