O'Toole wins nomination - is he our next Prime Minister?

Targeting individuals rights with bigotry has an immediate and real impact on those people, some later government can repeal those decisions but the impact to people's rights was already done. Tell black people from the Jim Crow era, "don't worry, it will be better in a hundred years or so..." Tell that 14 year old rape victim, sorry you have to carry that baby to term. Tell two people that love each other you are not allowed to do that now. Tell that child who suffers through the torture of conversion therapy, too bad you are evil. That is the cost.

...and yet there are people/groups in Canada who advocate for such things, but if you call them out on it... You're the "bigot"

Because.. "culture". (rolly eyes)

Sadly the term bigot has become a leftist pejorative, they hijacked it's true meaning. The definition of bigot is simple: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices.

View from the left:
If you disagree with me you are a bigot.
If you advocate wide religious freedoms you're a bigot because some religions have narrow views on the family.
If you advocate wide views on the family you are a bigot because you have narrow views on the freedom of religion.

Bingo.
Nailed it.

I am pretty sure we are all talking about definition you quoted not the recent far right wing victim statements ("view from the left"). I also know people want everyone to use the whitewashed politically correct term "Social Conservative".

BUT my question is still not answered, what is more important to Conservatives today: defeating Trudeau or or supporting bigots? Very unlikely you can have both.
All the power on this subject is in O'Toole's hands with his actions. Dancing around with dictionary definitions that actually prove the point is just trying to deflect IMO....

I know many former PC members and I am one myself. I actually have family members that held fund raising events at both their businesses and at their home for Harper (in attendance) and others back a decade ago. Like many, they are sick of what some in the party are trying to do. It is very telling that two of the three leadership candidates are well known bigots (sorry "Social Conservatives") and they had a good showing, the guy who won was the next choice for them.

All comes down to what Erin O'Toole does now. If you have his ear, let him know.

He is off to a good start:

But in the end it comes down to not words but who he actually hands power to in his shadow cabinet.
What powers do shadow cabinet ministers have?

Afaik no real power, but I think BMD''s point is does he pick social conservatives or moderate conservatives? That telegraphs his plan for government. If he is remotely smart, he will pick moderate conservatives for now. There is a good chance the government blows up in a month, there is an election and then LO picks the people that he is morally aligned with (which may not be the ones he picked before the election). Picking social conservatives as his team now means he loses the election badly.

I think he picks both, Social Conservatives in the west, moderates in the East. The tricky part is balance and messaging. The message has to be the party message and can't be rife with micro-messages from the fringy members.

He needs to pick loyal, smart, team players who can hold a party line through the election. After that, there's some wiggle room.

you guys think there will be a successful no confidence vote soon?

I don't think Trudeau is scared of that
he and the party are polling well due to the pandemic response

Libs could actually pick up some seats in a snap election

NDP are broke, Cons have a leader no one has heard of
Quebec? who TF can guess what they will do

WE notwithstanding
half the country is on the dole and don't want to lose it

Not a hope in hell. And if someones stupid enough to trigger one, well, they only stand to make more steps backwards than forwards.

Nope. In a bring down, the opposition campaigns before they topple the coalition. I’m sure Otoole is anxious, but not stupid.
I figure near Christmas.

Now is not normal though. JT has proven that he would rather be a dictator that a member of parliament. He does what he cam to make non-confidence votes impossible to hold. After the throne speech, I wouldnt be surprised if he punts for at least another six months to ensure he can extract more money for his friends. He is still ****** that they wouldnt let him pass his supreme commander bill at the beginning of the covid mess.

after we're vaccinated and back to somewhat normal
and the deficit is tallied......at least a year away

maybe by then Canadians will have figured out that Erin is not a woman
even you, MM, called him Peter at first, lol

do you think he'll succeed in making Scheer fade into the woodwork?

I think Sheer has already faded, if he misbehaves they'll just put him in a box. O'Toole is a military man, the chain of command is something he's used to and likely good at managing. I'm guessing you'll see some discipline in the ranks and some loyal and dependable people in the shadow cabinet.

We'll have to see how well he competes, but if I have to guess that may be one of his strengths too.

Would you wanna be ruled by a bunch of un elected Belgians,,?

The alternative is now living life according to the wishes of a bunch of unelected brits that didn’t fully understand what they were voting for but they thought it would give Johnny Foreigner a bloody nose.

I like O'Toole, he's a nice guy. Not as libertarian as I would like, but he's a compromise I can live with for a bit. Can he beat Trudeau? The problem is he doesn't just have to beat Trudeau, but pretty much 90% of the media in Canada that is rabidly left and Liberal Party supporting. The newspapers are on the government payroll to the tune of $600million. CBC shills for Trudeau at every opportunity. CTV is owned by Bellmedia - a long time Liberal Party supporter.

It was a miracle that Harper got elected. Unfortunately, he wasn't smart enough to understand the Machiavellian system that Pierre Eliot Trudeau set up in the 1970s to keep the Liberals getting elected. That system still exists today and the Conservatives have always been one step behind, with everything else flying above their heads.

From a slight left leaner....
Well, your definition of bigot can be easily applied to both Liberal and Conservative. The far left/right wings are bigots of the other side. No?

As for the other parts...
Disagree with me - great. Feel free to do so. Give me logic and change my mind.
I advocate wide religious freedoms - if you have narrow views, great. As long as they're not oppressive to the followers.
Wide views on family - well, families all over the world are messed up. If you care to leave yours, great. If you want to stick together, great.

All I hope is that O'Toole actually makes it interesting, and first and foremost - HONEST.
Let's finally have an election where you're choosing someone to vote FOR, not for the least WORST.
