Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

I took a drive down Eglinton in Mississauga today, and every intersection that had a right-turn lane was blocked by a 3 foot high snow wall that the plow left. Every intersection had some moron stuck in said snow wall.

This comment has nothing to do with snow tires but everything to do with people just don't know what they are doing -- especially if they think they can drive through a 3 foot snow wall with a regular car (without gunning it and without breaking your plastics).

When I needed to turn right I ignored the blocked right turn lanes, stopped at the light, and turned right through the path already cleared by the vehicles travelling perpendicular.

Holy **** man, people are retarded or what? If you put winter tire on your car, you still have to drive carefully just like when you have your stupid 3 season tire. But in case of emergency braking or other manoeuvre, they will help you, like, getting to a full stop a couple meter faster. I'm against any kind of law forcing people to use winter tire, it will outlaw the use of motorcycles/scooters during those months and most people will think that they can drive the same way as they do in the summer, but there is proof that actual winter tire help. Your 3 season tire may have the rating for snow/ice, but think about that, they are made for everything, so they aren't good anywhere! Snow tires are awesome in snow, ice tires are awesome on ice (it's what I have, don't buy ice tire, they ****ing suck during snow storm...) and winter tire, are good for both, not awesome, but good.

All i know is, co-worker has an AWD SUV with all-seasons....he couldnt make it out of the parking lot with a little incline to get to the main streets....

He most likely forgot to turn the 4WD on......

That means nothing, with good winter tire even with a fwd you can get out of most situation that has less than 40cm of snow, considering its soft snow.

So your saying there is no difference between FWD and 4WD in getting out of being stuck?
But not always will winter tires work for rear wheel drive.

Justify what expense?

In my case ...... the space. Comes at premium (second car has winter tires and I am hurting storing the extra wheels for that set) if you saw my garage with a car parked in (don't have a choice) every night and two bikes ..... Secondly, I hate driving with black rims for 3-4 months .... So, black cheap rims would not do ... LOL

There is one, but if your 4wd has 3 season tires, its going to be way harder than a fwd with good winter tire. The only time I was stock with my civic, was because there was so much snow, that the tires couldn't touch any firm ground under it. Its always fun to shovel under the car to get it back on the ground because of your own stupidity :D

RWD...its another story :p

Rwd 400hp and a ton of torque 300c with snow tires here, I was the first one out of the unplowed parking lot at work this today. I used to get stuck in less snow than we had today with all seasons. I will never go through winter on all seasons again.

Then get yourself a set of "All Weather" tires. Not "all season", but "ALL WEATHER". They are good for year round use, and have the snowflake symbol so are recognized for winter tire use.

Hankook, Nokian, Yokohama, Goodyear and other offer All Weather tires.

Without getting into the benefits of shorter stopping distance etc...

4 winter tires = $300-$800 for most cars that will last for as least 4 years
1 fender bender within 4 years will cost you $2000+ plus your insurance rate going up if you claim it and also the depreciation on said accident car. How much time from work will you miss? How about the aggravation and hassles from freezing as you wait for a tow truck in winter?

So that $400 seems to be a good hedge against risk and a clean driving record.
Some insurance company will consider it an at fault collision if you rear end the car in front of you because you were rear ended.

To each their own.
Maybe we should stop calling them snow tires and start calling them winter tires.

Vince 492 is right on about the Civic, it is totally amazing in snow, with good snow tires on a Civic todays snowstorm was a fun easy drive.

I drove about 400kms today. Newmarket to Waterloo to Brantford to North York to Markham to Newmarket. My winter tires were invaluable. However there were more than enough people still driving like ***** who had winter tires. Pointless having them if you still don't know how to drive.

And in the whole trip I got stuck once. On my own road just as I was getting home. In a snow drift caused by 3 neighbours all blowing their driveways clean straight onto the road. Came around a bend in my road and straight into a 2ft snowbank across a previously ploughed road.

agreed. i never realized the difference of having snow tires until i moved to the gta. i used to live in quebec where everyone had snow tires and there were much fewer idiots stuck than what i see today. if you're not gonna get snow tires don't venture out in bad snow conditions.

My winter beater is a 91 civic hatchback with good snow tires, its amazing in the snow and goes where most 4x4 still get stuck. It plows its own path including 3ft snow walls. My Xterra also has 4 snows and is able to go anywhere and help pull people out of the ditch.

Sorry dude, went out with my all seasons in the snow we got up here today and got through just fine... Even in the lane nobody used because it was still heavily covered in snow. Fully capable of handling without snows, thanks... The aggressive idiots with snows on that drive like ***** because they have snows on are more of a problem than experienced drivers with all seasons leaving proper spacing and room for error... My biggest concern is all the stupid/incapable drivers out on the roads.
I have only been stuck once this year and that was me trying to get through a 4' iced over snow bank. Haven't spun out or skidded enough to initiate pucker factor.

Most people have no clue how to handle a vehicle and this weather is when it shows.

Seriously, we get it, your the best....

Not saying that. Just have issues with people making absolute decisions on a vehicles ability to travel safely because they think all seasons in a bit of snow automatically means there will be an incident.

No, you're implying that you don't need winter tires to be safe because you are the best and drive fine (in your opinion) without them. The simple fact is, is that you and everyone else would be safer with winter tires.

Just throwing gas on the fire. I used to live in the snowbelt, I had snows because RWD+big V8+6"snow=parked.

I had a part time job driving tow truck , I've been to more single car accidents than most of the EMS guys. Lots of cars that are into the buckwheat may have had a better chance of staying on the road with winter tires.
If you have a new truck with fresh all seasons you'll roll right past a lot of cars and trucks on 4 yr old snows. They dont last forever and a 50% wear on a snow is pretty limiting on bite.

I consider winter tires part of the cost of a vehicle, I buy a new car the rims/tires/PSM are in the deal. If I buy a used car I go and find rims/tires immediately, tires are consumables , whether its snows or summers they wear out.
