Ontario should make winter tires mandatory.

Nokian WR G2 ALL-SEASON tyres out-perform a lot of snow tires. Just sayin' :D

The term "all season" to a tire company in Finland will and should have an entirely different meaning to a tire company located in Akron, OH. Acceptable handling characteristics in snow for an all purpose tire from a company where it's dark for 23 hr.s a day 3 months of the year should be a priority.

Not your typical all season tire. These fit into the "all weather" category. More of a marketing term from the manufacturers to help consumers differentiate between normal all seasons. Nokian markets this tire as part of their "all weather plus" line. All weather tires compose of all season tread on half of the tire and a winter tread on the other half. It's a compromise. You get better winter performance than all seasons but poorer wear and perhaps more noise.

Actually, Nokian markets it as an "all-weather" tire. Basically, it's a winter tire that is a bit better in the summer than regular winter tires.

Same here. Highly rated, great price point, made in Germany. General Altimax. Crappy Tire almost always has them on sale as well.

General Tire, once a US company got bought out by Continental Tire of Germany years ago.

All the top tier tire makers have "value" lines now.

Michelin owns BFgoodrich
Goodyear owns Dunlop
Bridgestone owns Firestone.

Having said that, of all the "value" brands I've tried, General Tires were the best and an excellent bang for the buck. Ran a set of their tires on the truck based on TireRacks and Consumer Reports glowing reviews. Good value and decent tire. BFG were the worst tires I've ever ran.

I bought my Dunlop snow tires used off Kijiji. The seller claimed they had spent one winter on his Caddy SRX. Upon inspection that seemed believable, they looked almost new. No funny wearing or cupping. I got them for $350. They have just started their 3rd winter on my Edge and I suspect they will last this winter and the next one at least.

If you're a good shopper, you can save lotso cash on Kijiji

I bought a set of Dunlop Grandtrek SJ5 (235/65R18 w/ steelies for $700 on kijiji. Seller claimed they were gently used one season. 2 tires looked virtually brand new, the other 2 about 75 - 80%. Decent deal considering the price of 18" tires alone but I found the wheels to be horribly out of balance. I got a tire shop to put weights on 'em (you should see how giant these weights are lol) and it's a lot better but still off balance. I suspect they are out of round. It's the risk you take when buying used but for winter it's ok. Tires work great and I highly recommend winter rubber.

I heard he's gay. Can you confirm that per chance? I think he's dreamy.

I drove on Sunday afternoon from Toronto to Ottawa via the 416 and then the 417 to Petawawa... It was insane the moves people pull as soon as the roads are covered. Either people taking up both lanes to have the entire road to themselves, the idiots tapping their brakes as soon as they start to slide and then the over aggressive idiots tailgating, cutting in to peoples safe following spaces to weave through and pass everyone.
People just need to relax a bit (I would say slow down, but at times people were going overly slow) and change their normal habits.
I normally stay at the GFs in Ottawa Sunday nights and leave early Monday morning (5 or so) to get to Petawawa on time, but I just decided to leave early Sunday night so that I could take my time. Glad I did, my trip was double what it normally is.

Brantford 401 east bound half way to Ancaster on boxing day was a mess. I saw at least 6 vehicles in the ditch. As if seeing the first guy in the ditch with obviously ice covered roads isn't enough of a clue to slow the F down... Don't feel sorry for those people.

I'm on all seasons this year (couldn't dish out the $1200 for new tires this year) and I'm just taking it easy, leaving extra distance and driving properly. Winters next season for sure though.

Have a safe driving winter then :D

A good Swedish designed tire. The Altimax is a rebranded version of the discontinued Gislaved Nord Frost 3. Continental AG is parent to both General Tire and Gislaved.

Was looking a winter tires (first time buyer) this fall. One of the selling features was that the tire stays soft below 7 deg.C where all seasons harden up. Had a hard time getting steel rims (funky size) so dropped it. As the temps. plummeted I made a conscious effort to test grip of the all seasons on dry cold pavement. No problem in that department. On the snowy day I adjusted my driving. Still awaiting the black ice test, but never having an accident, I'm not getting overly worried. Can't argue with science tho, winter tires are better.
