North American International Motorcycle Supershow - Jan 3-5, 2025

Maybe a picture will help.

This is your view from behind the visor. The peak is in a fixed position in your field of view:

The peak never moves. In order to block the sun, you have to turn your head and the entire helmet to move the peak in a position between your eyes and the sun.

A piece of black tape along the top of the visor will do exactly the same thing. When you move your head, that piece of black tape will block out the sun.

Exactly like a peak. But it won't catch the air at speed or make the helmet noisier...

If you want exactly the same sun blockage as a peak, all you have to do is shape the tape like this:

How does that work if you want to keep the sun out (or block roost) AND get a little fresh with the visor up?

You don't seem to understand.

Nobody puts black tape on the top of their visor, that's ridiculous.

I was making a point that the peak is essentially part of the helmet's viewport. Functionally, it makes the field of view smaller. You can do the same thing by putting a piece of cardboard inside the helmet behind the visor to make the eye port smaller. Which again, is ridiculous. Nobody does that.

If you want to block more sun without a peak, tilt your head a bit lower.

As for roost, it depends on the helmet and the length of the peak, but most ADV helmets have shorter peaks than MX helmets, so you have to tilt your head lower to block roost.

This is the peak of a typical MX helmet:

This is the peak on the Arai XD-4 your friends were talking about:

How far down do you have to tilt your head to block roost coming from the bike's rear tire in front of you? Are you still able to see the trail ahead of you at that point? Maybe. But the visibility is much less than a MX helmet at that point.

The peaks on MX helmets were never designed to block the sun. That's not their intended purpose. They're long enough to block roost because most MX bikes don't have a windshield and the attack position on a dirt bike is head over the handlebars.

Some ADV helmets may have peaks long enough to block roost. Most aren't, because at freeway speeds, they'd catch too much air and wrench your neck back.

MX helmets were never designed to block the sign. That's not their purpose. They're long enough to block roost because most MX bikes don't have a windshield and the attack position on a dirt bike is head over the handlebars.

I was waiting patiently to see a picture of the view utilizing the black tape method! Now I have to see this cardboard technique!

Watched CP24 breaking news that one of the stunt riders was transported to hospital with serious injuries. Apparently accident happened around noon today.

That's terrible. I hope the guy's OK. I believe the guy is the owner of the company doing the stunts. It's not hard to imagine someone getting seriously hurt.

I saw their show at 5:30 on Saturday evening. My kids were antsy and wanted to leave but had huge smiles on their faces when the jumps started. That show made the whole outing worthwhile to them.

I looked online but couldn't find any details about what happened. Was it during a show?

From what I read and this is only my coles notes. I was not there. It happened during a show while jumping. Apparently the landing didn't go as planned (tangled wheel with carpets) then hit wall. Broken femur. I always thought the landing area was short followed by a wall. Also the spectators are too close in the event the launch goes wrong or a bike veers off course upon landing. They know the risks and I hope he heals soon! Glad no one else was injured.

Couldn’t they figure out a way to make it accessible to more people? Say a tiered platform? We lined up Saturday afternoon but by the time we got to the steps it was pretty clear we weren’t going to see much so we bailed.

i dunno! i imagine its just the nature of a mobile, indoor road show, especially one thats only a few days long. we went to hall 5 around 2:45'ish and were 2nd in line for the 3pm start.

I was there on Friday afternoon.

There was an area sort of behind the 613 Performance booth. Some company had some electric dirt bike (mini) that you can take for test ride.
While I was walking around I head a the sounds of a small dirt bike engine and than a huge thump.
Turns out whoever was riding it, slammed into a wall/truck door.

I did not see any paramedics but I did see the Peel region police officers go over and attend the scene. Maybe just to assess for first aid.

Later on, the dirt bike in question was leaned up again the wall with the handle bars all mangled.

Got there Sat Just before 2pm and by 2:45 we had pretty well covered the whole place. We re looped a couple of spots, avoided a few others. Looked at a few bikes at a few booths and a little bit of gear. Should have brought ear plugs for walking past the obnoxiously loud in bike stereo sellers. We were looking but saw no one we recognized so we spilt and headed home. We hadn't been in several years and were kinda looking forward to it, I'm not sure what we were expecting but it felt meh, emptier than we remembered & reminded me why we stopped going.

Good lord that was flippin annoying.

As we walked by I yelled to my wife "And this is how you make every single person around you hate you".

I felt bad for all the other booth operators nearby as they had to listen to that nonsense every 5 minutes for the entire show.

I wonder how many stereos he actually sold?

Harley people and their money are easily separated, so probably more than a few.

It pisses me off to no end when you come into some small town somewhere and one of those "LISTEN TO MY HAWGS STEREOOOO AT VOLUME LEVEL 11 YEEEAHAHHHH" bikes is rolling through annoying the **** out of everyone. Have some bloody respect and turn it down when you're in a town or whatever - crank it to 11 when you're by yourself in the countryside or something if you really must, but not everyone in a 6 block radius or the Tim Hortons parking lot wants to listen to your **** music.

I think shows should consider offering discounts on admission to families. I brought my two sons just for the heck of it and something to do - they ride dirt bikes but aren't *really* into it, so weren't sure if they wanted to go. At $25 per head, it'd be easy to see people deciding not to bring the family and perhaps then, not to go. I was on the fence myself but ended up spending $1000 on a helmet.

As it was, my sons bought some jewelry (snake rings, ugh) and some wild game salami, as well as food and drinks in the food court, so they spent $100 themselves.

Haven’t experienced that yet but I’m sure it happens.
