Thanks. It's up in the corner of a screen now. Watching the chat, it seems that you have 10 to 60 seconds from the time it flags something until you need to have the checkout complete. Saw a 5900x in burnaby but apparently I haven't bought from canada computers online before so I got it in the cart but by the time I made an account it was gone.
They had one. It is strange that the head office is letting it get to a store, that doesn't make much sense. Shipping it all over the place instead of once.
The way they are being distributed is bizarre, I speculate it's some strategy on AMD's part to discourage resellers. It's probably for the best because if they did it in a more orderly/predictable way I'm pretty sure I would never have had a chance of ever getting a 5000 series CPU

In more rational times I would discourage you or anybody from buying stuff from CC via their website. In-store my experiences have been fine for me personally... these days all I can say is best of luck
Annoyingly the computer is now assembled. Still no luck on the chip hunt. Interior space was a little tighter than I hoped so the rear fan got mounted externally. If I bought a low profile rear fan it would fit inside but I'd rather have more airflow. In the first trial fit, I was able to put both fans on the tower cooler but motherboard power cable screwed that up. If I end up with a 5950 and it is getting warm, I will figure something out (pair of 80mm would fit nicely). I suspect I will be ok without it as it doesn't sound like current ryzen overclocks all that well.
What are people using multiple M.2 for? I use one as a fast boot drive, but damn are they ever annoying to access. Additional drives will be 2.5 if I want them (probably not needed at I put 1TB on the M.2). To get to one M.2 on this board requires removing the CPU cooler and two heatsinks. To get to the second slot, you need to strip almost the whole computer as it is on the bottom of the MB.

NVMe SSDs are quite quicker than SATA drives.. If you have money and your motherboard supports PCIe Gen4 then it worth checking Samsung 980 Pro or Corsair MP600. These are quite quick! Also, how often you need to access them? They are basically "install and forget" in most cases..
Edit: Btw, I'm using NMVe M.2 SSDs for everything now. Previously, I had M.2 500GB for system/projects/main stuff and 2.5 hdd/sdd as 2nd drive for everything else.. but now you can buy 1TB 970 EVO M.2 for ~$160 (when it is on discount)..

I put in a 1 tb 980 in this build. As for how often I access, rarely but I typically start with one drive and add one a few years later as the first one nears capacity. That way I can get double the capacity for the same money and it hasn't been sitting around unused for years. For the work computer, 1Tb is probably sufficient for its entire life.

I'm not sure what's more funny, the fact that I didn't have a clue demand shot this far up, or if the whole boomers/last gen/out of touch "adults" hating on gaming has become a "losers making fun of what's popular" scene.
Long story short: supply issues are apparently due to demand (obviously), but it isn't just because semiconductor manufacturing can't produce enough, it's also because demand for computer parts went up like crazy post COVID. This coincides with the software field, where I've benefitted from the desperate need of software developers but the lack of them (even the C-B trash tier devs are being paid decent amounts now.)
For everyone here: expect computer part prices to actually go up for 2-3 years. Semiconductor producers take billions to set foundation for. Similar to how Intel said "we're gonna make a consumer based GPU to go against AMD and Nvidia" 3 years ago but still hasn't produced ****....it's gonna take a few years before supply can realistically meet demand.
Or maybe after COVID is over, gaming/being an introvert will stop being cool, and us true introverts can go back to the cave for cheaper lol

Contrary to that, peripheral memory is still down in price. Supply eventually caught up to and exceeded demand. Might not be for long, if the covid keeps up.
That's partly why I built the rest of the computer with no solid lead on a chip. I figured that when I found the chip, some other component would probably screw me up and leave me with most of a PC. There was apparently a 5950X in Vaughan this morning but it dropped when I wasn't sitting at the computer so I obviously missed it.
I'm just gonna wait for AMD's 6xxx CPUs and Geforce 4xxx series at this rate lol
Had that happen to a WeeStrom Corbin seat yesterday. At this point the kids' desktop computers were all built with components purchased at the same time, Two of mine are Frankenstein monstrousities, and my laptop has a fairly new 1TB SSD, because the 250 Gig didn't seem large enough. Part of the problem I've found is the 4 Mb built in RAM, which can't be upgraded. It's a bit of a bottleneck, but I've been using the laptop beyond what I'd originally intended it for.
Just in time for DDR4 production to wind down as AMD/Intel transition to DDR5 soon
Yeah, probably won't go from 32 to 64 since the price went up 1.5 times, from $156 to $230.

I picked up a WD 8TB hard drive from Costco for backups, that "included" WD Discovery, WD Backup, WD Security, & WD Drive Utilities.
I've been warned that the encryption it uses is hardware dependent.
Anybody gone through trying to get the Discovery software to see the drive, and download the actual backup software for one of these? It seems that the software included may now be obsolete, and they may be pointing people to some not free software on the web, but I'm not sure? The WD website doesn't support Firefox.
Edit: Apparently, they've moved to Acronis True Image for Western Digital. Seems to be free for five years, and take 3-4 hours to backup the entire drive. That being said, it's one of those, xxx hours remaining bars that changes up & down over time, I have not timed it with a watch. Seems to have a disk clone, disk partitioning, boot disk/usb, and file erasing utilities.

The chip hunt was ridiculous with no end in sight. BB had a drop of 250 video cards and if you didnt complete checkout in 15 seconds from the drop, you didnt get one. Way too many people actively watching for drops. I bought a 3900XT for ~$150 less than I could realistically get a 5900X for (if I could ever find one). Yeah, it's a bit slower but only by 10% or so in my workload and much more than 10% cheaper. This assumes that when CC says they have one in stock at the store and I complete the checkout that they actually give me the chip. Time will tell, lots of stories of completed orders being cancelled.
