Neighbourhood changes?

I'm actually surprised we haven't seen more people selling the homes they can't afford
many have, sold for less than they bought.

Some are still holding on in desperation, the banks made it easy by essentially adding the higher interest rate costs to the back end so a 30 year mortgage becomes a 40 year mortgage etc.

What's a decent RV cost? Maybe $200k?? Either way, you can go live wherever you want and have a ton of money to live off of (assuming you sold a house with decent equity).

What's PPC btw?

a lot of jurisdictions won't allow you to just park a trailer on a property and live on it unfortunately. Or fortunately for that matter.

I didn't think that was legal....the amortizations go negative until the trigger rate hits. Then the payment jumps up 20-30-50% until it resets back to the max 30.

But I could be wrong.

They're working on this scheme to see how to roll it out. Apparently some of the conditions will be that you MUST build a house on it within X years, run utilities to it, etc. But those conditions will be known in early 2024.

And as earlier in the thread...not much happening in Cochrane.

We've been in Mississauga Winston Churchill / Burnhamthorpe area for 30+ years. No tent people around, never been robbed, crime is minimal IMO, so good for now.

I think we're seeing addiction, mental health and cost of rental housing issues combine to exacerbate problems that have always existed in the past, but to a much lesser extent.

Have a cottage in the Lakefield area, so plugged into the Peterborough Examiner as I like to keep current on local news. Peterborough is, IMO, a blue collar town with long standing issues with addiction (drug and alcohol), homelessness, mental health issues, poor rental options and the paper is full of stories re crime, tent cities and controversy concerning council's attempts to address these issues. There are no easy solutions.

People need jobs that pay above poverty wages, rents need to be affordable, addiction treatment needs to be available long term, mental health resources need to be available. None of this is going to happen in the short term, if ever.

Apparently, we need the Bradford bypass, the 413, a 2,000 underground parking lot for a high end spa, EV battery plants and a range of other things government wants to put in place vs. healthcare for addicts and those suffering from mental health issues. Pay now or pay later.

Most will waive that for a finite amount of time providing you are building a house on the property while doing so.

I recently did a presentation about my volunteer experience at the food bank. I kept using the term "a fundamental failure of our provincial and federal government", as they provide exactly $0 in funding for food banks.

Not so long back I was in upstate New York. I went to a market in Seneca Falls and at the entrance to the market was a sign that read “we accept food vouchers”. Turns out the area is pretty progressive in that way and there’s some kind of social assistance voucher system in place. I was impressed. No one should go hungry or without water in a first world country.

What I meant was it hasn't hit the mainstream media yet but I did google that - interesting place to overnight at but I guess if you can't do it on the street why not.
The future is here:

Walmart lots always have space , people around 24/7 is free security and the campers almost always buy some groceries or crap at wallymart

It works most of the time but there are some blackouts. For instance, Daytona during speed week (and presumably bike week), walmart parking is something like a one hour limit. That ruined my plans. On the flip side, a nice lady that worked at Quiznos let me park in her driveway (and left a note that the door was open and cold beer was in the fridge) and the next night I parked in a cool swamp. Much more interesting than wally world.

I applaud volunteer work of any type. I averaged 1000+ hours a year for decades, it’s thankless work but personally rewarding.

Sadly many of those organization now have sizeable payrolls as personal gain has infiltrated traditional volunteer organizations. With that comes call for enormous govt funding.

I’d like to see some return to personal responsibility, family responsibility, and real altruism.

All this "Living on a RV" talk, brought back memories of a talk I had with a guy 10+ years ago. He was divorced and living in a RV which he parked at the back of an industrial building parking lot.

I asked him why, and he responded with,"I have to pay $1,200/kid in child support". He had two! So $2,400 a month, with no money for anything else.

But he would make the most of it, and he was always positive.

We have two trailers at our warehouse location , it’s security , they are both great guys and good employees. But same , divorce left them a bit short on options. I dont know but would guess a lot of RV parks have acres of similar stories .

Probably not. More likely a to be Honey Boo-boo look alike than a California girl.
Somewhere in between. Far better than mama june but had years of hard living. She was married. I'm not fancy enough for a trailer. I was sleeping in the bed of a truck. Cheaper than a hotel and keeps me away from the bitey animals.
