Was talking to local Barrie rider this past summer. He mentioned the people that are released from jail/prison from the area are given money to take the bus home. The money is often used to buy the next fix. And so they stay.
Barrie was working on free transportation "home" for CNCC releases. If they go to a place of support, they are more likely (slightly) to succeed instead of another lap through the system. They also aren't in barrie.
Head towards trials and you can probably get something awesome at a reasonable price. Those of us closer to the gta need to travel beyond commutable range to try to pull that off (or huge war chest).
Been in Aurora and Newmarket a lot lately and one thing I have noticed, is that dog owners have become **********, either leaving the crap on the sidewalk or picking it up but then dropping the turdbag further down the road when they think no one is watching. Maybe Aurora and Newmarket always had that issue, though I dont see it happen anywhere near as often in other parts of the gta i frequent.

Newmarket and Aurora have historically been a the trashier parts of York Region. They have some very nice areas, but mostly cheaply built tract homes, poorly maintained public spaces, and lousy public schools.
Can anyone comment on Bradford? I'm thinking of dumping out of Brampton finally ... was considering Newmarket but Bradford is smaller which is appealing. I'm trying to stay between 400 & 404 as I work near Dufferin & Steeles.

When we were looking to move north for more house for the money, newmarket was a strong contender. My wife really likes it. People aren't as stuck up and self-important as further south. Surprising selection of decent restaurants. Trail by fairy lake is nice to get out for a run or easy ride (or go north towards holland landing if you want more hills).
I have friends that live in old bradford and love it (they can walk downtown in about 10 minutes). As with every other subdivison hell, I have no love for new bradford. Everything is car centric. As they continue to add thousands of houses, congestion will increase. There are only a couple ways in or out so that can cause issues (Big crash a few weeks ago near green lane made newmarket to bradford a multi-hour trip). Bradford bypass will help get non-residents around and that will improve traffic. With the rate Douggie is cancelling promises, who knows if that will get built.
My ideal place would be a bungalow or small house with a 3 car garage (minimum 2 car) ... try and find 3 car garages these days with a small house. Almost impossible.
I love some of the places on the right side when heading into Hockley from the north. Exactly what I'm looking for with a bit of land but alas, they're too far to commute from (not that I've even seen any for sale).

Three car garage on a small house is rare. Probably easier to find an older house with attached one or two car garage with an additional detached garage (or space for one and zoning allows it).
House sigma is very helpful for this. Sort by price and important features (size, garages, etc) and look at the map for sold homes that meet your criteria. You can quickly narrow down what needs to happen to get the best fit for you.
On the newmarket front, it's not all good. There are some neighbourhoods that are a hard no (like the dogpound).

We're lucky here as Dog poo isn't a big problem. A generation ago free running dogs were common, crap and tipped over garbage cans. The owners ignored the problem.

I built a couple of houses in Holland Landing (River Drive Park) years ago. Mosquitos a bit of a pain for a bit in the summer, but nice hood, and room for 3 car garages. . Queensville and Holland River.

I looked at a place near the top of Dufferin St. last month in a small hamlet called Ansnorveldt. On the other side of the backyard was the holland marsh with lettuce growing right there. House was from the 30's but an addition was added to it and it was reno'd nice except for a f'up on the stairwell leading upstairs. It's still for sale.
It's on a septic system which scares me a bit. A bit too far into farmer country for my liking so I'm still looking.

Imo, septic is almost a non-issue. Get it pumped and inspected as a condition and then you know what you have. Don't do stupid city people things like dumping bleach down the drain and it will be not much different than sewer.
If you are looking at houses with Wells, they are a huge deal. I'd consider a flow test almost mandatory. You can often tell the houses with bad water supply as they change hands often.
