Mountain Bikes & places to ride.

I think in moto terms, which it seems is usually backwards to what cyclists think. Upshift = Go faster.

That's the way I'm thinking, although it means pedalling slower.

I just checked my old shifters. I can confirm the XTs upshift 4 gears in a single sweep while the SLXs only did three. The advantage is the thumb sweep for 3 gears on the xt's are relatively easily doable when riding the trails. Not so much on the SLXs.

Are Giant brand bikes any good?

Got my eye on this one. Its a hybrid type bike, which is just what I need. I have a connection that can get me a brand new Giant bike for a decent deal.

A decent enough frame, the gearing is mtb geared though so don't expect roadie speeds. The front fork though heavy will help in potholes and other road irregularities. If you are in the city get a decently wide set of 700c tires as they cope with ruts and tracks better than thin tires(downside is they are a bit slower to accelerate and maintain speed).

Quality wise Giant isn't bad at all. I would assume you're looking at commuting and or some light trails with a bike like that. As long as you don't plan on hitting the rough stuff with it or as said above me, hitting roadie speeds there's nothing wrong with that at all.

Pretty much sums it up. 80% on road riding, 20% light trail. No rough stuff.

Don't need "the best", just don't want to own garbage.

Thanks for the 2 posts above this one.

Speaking of carbon.... I'll be rocking a set of Zipp 808s this year. Bam!!

Been a month+ now. They still in one piece? :p

I remember when I had bikes worth less than 5k. You start getting top of the line components and 5 grand doesn't take very long to pass.

Too me, thats just a special edition top line Specialized bike with McLaren badges.

Edit : I'd rather save a few thou and spring for the Porsche bike, and still impress all my friends with the fancy badge.

The Mclaren version of the Venge was built in Woking with improvements on the standard Venge, mostly due to their advanced work in composites and their in house capabilities. The "Porsche" bike is a rebadged Votec. Nothing special, really. If you're going to get smarmy and spout off, stick to something you know about, like Civics.
