Mountain Bikes & places to ride.

If you want an All Mountain (read: freeride) bike, sure, it's a good deal. If you want an XC (lighter) FS bike, might want to look for something a little less robust (lighter) and more suited to faster/smoother trails like a Fuel, FSR-XC, or a Scalpel.

One (or two......or three) of each is ideal. Pick the bike to ride for the terrain/type of riding you're doing that day.

*EDIT*

Did I read that right? I recommended a SCALPEL?!?!? Better go pour myself a few fingers of Blanton's, STAT.

^^ Only thing I would add to that is make sure it fits you properly. Improper fit = waste of money as you won't ride something not comfortable to you.

I don't even know what to believe in anymore.

Lol I have a "mini DH" bike. I go down, I go up and just about anywhere with it. I scored it at a really good price and I am happy with it. Don't get caught up in gear whoring. You'll never have enough bikes or the right bike.

I'm looking at the Scott 960 ($1450) the rocky mountain trail head ($1100) and one shop suggested a bike made by Stevens, said it was component wise the same as the Scott.
The current giant bikes on their site aren't giving me many options in my price range, I'm just trying to figure out all this fork business. Is a smaller diameter air shock (like the reckons) as capable as say an xc32?
still looking, have a few more bike shops to visit and more research to do. Some of these bikes are just plain boring to look at, like solid grey. I know colour doesn't matter but I still want to like looking at it.

Went in to the shop up here, talked to a guy for nearly 2 hours (finally someone that actually knew what they were selling) and settled in for a Norco Nitro 9.2 for $1279. Better fork than that Scott and everything else seems to be pretty good for the price point.

Ok... I saw this on pinkbike and its easily in the budget and local.... This any good?

please remember I'm totally new, and looking more at trails than downhill....

The Banshee scream is a good bike but it is a free ride (fr), not am (all mountain) or xc (cross country). It's a heavier bike with suspension for significant jumps and drops, at the expense of pedalling efficiency and trail use. FR is heavier duty than all mountain (am), which heavier duty than xc.

172drive, at your price range for trail riding you should look at xc preferably, or am at most. Cheaper am bikes will be a xc compromise already with poorer pedalling efficiencies and heavier weight.

Congrats on taking the time to speak to shops and get things sorted out. Supporting your bike shop is always good. Components look quality and at that price new a hardtail is the only way to go. I rode hardtail in the rockies for many years. They can do a lot.

Had the new bike out for a little trip from the GF's apartment in Ottawa to downtown and back. Pedals so much easier, and the brakes... Well at least I have legit brakes for once!

Now if the snow would melt and stop falling, we could get these trails dried up so I can actually ride this thing.

A buddy of mine went out a few weekends ago... I have no idea why. It took him longer to wash the bike than it did to go on the ride. Lots of nice new ruts thanks to him now too.

There's several trails in my area that are rough to begin with. They're out in the woods, off the normal path etc. Nothing that's a 'proper bike trail' or maintained. I've been out three times. Muddy yes but a ton of fun

I'm not into carbon fibre frames for AM duty. But I finally got some carbon fibre on my bike. New bits have come.:)

Easton Haven Carbon bar and Haven stem

Race Face Half Nelson grips

Stan's tire sealant and Easton tubeless valve stems.

2013 XT shifters

^^ If it's worth anything, I have xt everything except brakes (xtr) and I love them. I'm hard on my mountain bike and they take a ton of abuse.

Changing to 10s is a big outlay (crank, rings, chain, cassette, derailleurs, shifters), but again, kijiji is your friend. Personally I wouldn't bother. If you really want the hub, you can always run a spacer on your existing cassette, as well.

lol, xt, lx that brings back memories from almost 20yrs!!!! ago. Anybody remember house brand Silent Sports? I still have a 95 and 96 Hurricane?, Cyclone?, Duster? can't remember the names anymore but some kind of weather disturbance theme. Mostly xt with light sprinkle of lx to keep cost in check. And, oh ya, Girvin Vector forks. What a calamity.
