Motorcycle Parking Fees Recommended without Notice or Public Consultation

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

I work in Wong-Tam's ward and tried to talk reason. She said that she was against the free on-street parking in pay & display areas because it promoted the parking of large motorcycles on sidewalks, so she clearly isn't operating on logic.

That makes absolutely zero sense. If parking is free you would park on the road. If parking costs money and you can park on the sidewalk for free, then you would park on the sidewalk. Although in either case it's still illegal to park on the sidewalk.

Those of you that do park your bikes on the sidewalk in front of a business, how do you even get up there? I've thought about it a few times but jumping the curb doesn't look so easy...

Obviously if there is a ramp you can use that but I see some bikes parked like 200m from the nearest ramp onto the sidewalk and I'm not about to try riding between pedestrians.

It makes no sense to you. It makes no sense to me either. It's Wong-Tam logic.

With a little bit of practice, its pretty easy. I am just worried about hitting the bottom fairing when I climb curbs.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

The agenda for the January 23rd Public Works and Infrastructure Committee has been published and still no report about charging for motorcycle parking. The second bit of good news is that Mike Del Grande, the Councillor who proposed this in the first place, has resigned as chair of the Budget Committee. Hopefully this means that he is no longer actively interested in scrounging for pennies. It's been over a year sinse this issue was first raised. Let hope that it is now dead!

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Thank you soo much for keeping an eye on it. Much appreciated.

Is there a place where those meetings and agendas published?

This link gets you to the calendar:

Then just click on the committee on the day that you want. We are watching the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. Agendas are usually posted within a week of the meeting.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

If this issue is dead in the water, does it still need to be a sticky?

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

It's a pretty major item to riders in the GTA and we're only talking a few months here. I think it needs to stay up, for now.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

I agree, keep a watchful eye on it, just in case. You don't want it to sneak up on you one day.

I would prefer to see this thread and keep up to date instead of being pushed down by 1000 "how do I do an oil change" threads that are about to pop up

It's not "how do I do an oil change" it's "what type of oil is best?"

Seriously, it's great to have people following the calendar and reporting back. Who knows when someone else on council might pick it up as a cause.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Good News, the March 19th Committee agenda is published, and still nothing about motorcycle parking. I'll keep watching.

On a side note, there is an item related to requiring cyclists to ride in single file. Not a bad idea, but I'm willing to bet that it will be enforced even less than they enforce 1 or 2 person vehicles in the diamond lanes (that allow motorcycles). This should include e-bikes too!

"Summary
City Council on February 20 and 21, 2013, referred Motion MM30.4 to the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee.

Ontario Highway Traffic Act

The introduction of Municipal Code Chapter 950, Section 950-201(A) would restrict all cyclists from riding in any configuration other than single file, at any time of day, on every Toronto street.

In certain cases it is possible for road users to reasonably share the road, without creating congestion or road safety issues:

• On residential, collector, or arterial roads where there are sufficient lanes for cyclists ride two abreast, such that faster vehicles may pass these road users using adjacent traffic lanes; and
• At times of day when the traffic volumes are low.

At times when these conditions are not in place, and the roadway must be shared by cyclists and other road users, the appropriate behaviours are legislated according to Section 148(1) of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. This section of the Act requires cyclists to responsibly position themselves on the right side of the roadway when a faster vehicle approaches to pass. A charge may be laid for “failing to move right to be overtaken”. The fine for this charge is $85.

Cyclists are therefore legislated by the Highway Traffic Act to not block the roadway. An additional municipal By-law stipulating that cyclists must 'ride single file' in situations where they are not blocking or disrupting traffic around them is unnecessary, and may invite situations which are less safe for cyclists."

Finally, drives me nuts when I see a pack of them side by side blocking a whole lane to chat. Very rude, I never did that as a cyclist and gave **** to friends that wanted to do that.

The law is that a cyclist can use the entire width of the curb lane to avoid any hazards in the way, then move back to the curb, out of the way of traffic flow. Unfortunately the militant cycling advocates have misinterpreted this law to the point that cyclists believe in the myth they can take up an entire lane anytime they feel like it.

For example the militant cyclist YouTuber, who was made famous by The Star not so long ago. In one of her videos she can be heard screaming at a car driver about how section 147 of the HTA gives her the right to the entire lane, when it does nothing of the sort. This sort of behaviour is what gets people ****** at cyclists and it should act as a caution to those in the motorcycling world, who think that their behaviour is only their business.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Wasn't this bylaw axed? I thought I heard on the news the other day that cyclists are now allowed to ride side by side?

Ps - good to be back on gtam after winter hibernation. ;-)

They are allowed to ride side-by-side, but not when it blocks the passage of other traffic. It now defaults to the HTA which states that slower traffic must turn out to the right, in order to let faster moving traffic pass.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

btw - good to hear that the motorcycle parking thing has been put on the back burner..
