Motorcycle Parking Fees Recommended without Notice or Public Consultation

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Wasn't this bylaw axed? I thought I heard on the news the other day that cyclists are now allowed to ride side by side?

Ps - good to be back on gtam after winter hibernation. ;-)

It hasn't been axed quite yet, but Committee changed the recommendations to get rid of it. It will be heard by Council on April 3rd. Looks like the cycling lobby got this one spun around in their favor. As Rob says, the HTA still prevails.

"Committee Recommendations
The Public Works and Infrastructure Committee recommends that:

1. City Council direct the City Solicitor, at the time Municipal Code Chapter 950 becomes enforceable, to submit a bill to delete Subsection 950-201A from Chapter 950, Traffic and Parking.

2. Following the repeal of Municipal Code Section 950-201A, City Council direct that the General Manager, Transportation Services, provide recommendations for municipal by-laws necessary to ensure the safe and equitable use of Toronto’s roadways by cyclists and other road users, as part of the by-law review process recommended by the Ontario Chief Coroner’s report on Cycling Deaths."

Thanks for keeping an eye on this.

Just a suggestion - perhaps you could have the current status of this thread in the title of the thread, rather than the current static title...
So for today it could read "Motorcycle parking fees on hold for now", or something similar.

I'm happy with Jojo's suggested change. It would be good if a moderator could follow-up. The next Committee meeting is June 19th, but the agenda isn't out yet. Given that it's been over a year since the deadline staff were given to report back, I'm hoping it's dead. I'll still keep an eye on it, but won't bother with regular updates unless there is a change in status.

Done.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

tomorrows the 19th, some one is paying attention i hope

It's not on today. The only semi-related thing on today's agenda is a report giving the TPA authority to adjust the maximum time you can park at pay & display meters.

I'll keep an eye on things, but only post if something is happening. A number of us have also written to the City about this, and requested to be notified. The Clerks department is required to provide written notice to anyone who has requested. If they are following the rules, we should be notified. Nothing is ever 100%, but it's looking like a dead issues these days.

Something that some riders may not know is that the time limits still apply to bikes, whether or not you have to pay for the space. Any such change could also have an effect on riders.

Most likely they are going to try and Reduce the time limit? so to get people moving along? Ie. Business Associations complaining about lack of available parking for their customers. So rather than have a max parking time of say 4hrs, it could be limited to 2hrs.

The specific wording of the recommendation was about giving the TPA authority to adjust specific time limits. Here is the summary:
Summary
This report recommends an amendment to Subsection 179-7 of the City of Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 179, Parking Authority. The requested amendment is a minor adjustment to the current delegated authority to the Toronto Parking Authority, at on-street paid parking locations within the time periods that parking is permitted at such locations, to also encompass the maximum parking period, that is the duration for which parking is allowed, subject to agreement from the City Councillor in whose ward the changes are proposed. This report also requests delegated authority to the City Solicitor to process amendments to City by-laws regulating on-street parking meters and machines to incorporate changes to the maximum parking period. This request is consistent with the existing delegated authority to change the rates and operating hours at the meters and machines as set out in Chapter 179.

Agreed that bikes are subject to the same time limit rules as cars, but people who street park regularly find that its generally not enforced for bikes. Still worth keeping an eye out for chalk marks on your tires. Based on recent posts, it seems that the bigger problem is stupid cagers knocking bikes over.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

I've been chalk marked a couple times before and was ticketed once for being in a 1hr spot all day, though the ticket was more than five years ago, so I dunno. Last time I was chalk marked was maybe a year or two ago?

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

I have friends who do and have worked for the government. THEY WASTE TRUCK LOADS OF MONEY! They are worried about a small percentage of parking in toronto?

THEY WASTE TRUCK LOADS OF MONEY!

They have to. If they don't waste it all - their budget will get cut down for coming year. Tough job... :D

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

So who's going to go there and make the case that if scooters can park on sidewalks, that motorcycles should be able to, too?

The petition talks about both.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Perhaps I'm misreading, but I only see scooters and mopeds.
