Motorcycle Parking Fees Recommended without Notice or Public Consultation

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

I just wanted to chime in on this. I'm just starting to ride and one of my main motivations was that I live downtown and hate paying for parking. I'd be happy to help out however needed but the liklihood of me consistently remembering to check this thread is pretty slim. Is there any way of subscribing to the thread or getting on a mailing list of some sort to stay in the know? Thanks!

Any updates ?

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Any updates ?

The next Public Works & Transportation Committee is September 12. The agenda won't come out until 1 week before at the earliest. I'll keep an eye on it and post an update when it comes out. Anyone who contacted the Clerks Department or Works staff and asked to be notified, (including myself) "should" receive a notice. If anyone gets one, please post on this thread. Until then, let's keep hoping staff are going to let this one slip through the cracks!

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Some good news!

The next Public Works & Transportation Committee is September 12. The agenda is now out and there's nothing on it about motorcycle parking fees. The following meeting is October 11th. I'll keep watching.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

the arguments being advanced by Del Grande and Wong-Tam are, to say the least, biased: While motorcyclists do indeed burn gas, they burn significantly less of it, especially in urban centres. That they also can't name a dollar figure being lost is somewhat odd. How would they know the law was a success, for example?

The argument specifically raised by Wong-Tam, that free motorcycle parking in on-street pay and display spaces is somehow responsible for motorcycles being parked on the sidewalk, is bloody nonsensical.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

This issue has lost it's steam. I say it's dead in the water.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

It's still worth following, given what members of council were the driving force behind it.

Agreed. I'll keep watching. Sometimes issues sink into that black hole called City Hall only to resurface when you least expect it.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Do we have a list of names of councillors who are in support of this idea? I ask because I am now personally 3 degrees of separation from one of them and believe I could enact some persuasive change, should it come down to it.

Michael Del Grande and Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam are the counsellors who were pressing to remove free motorcycle parking in pay and display spaces. No idea who else was in on that.

I have heard that Councillor Michelle Berardinetti e-mailed a constituant saying she would not support charging for motorcycle parking. I am not aware of the position of other Councillors, except the 2 Rob mentioned, who moved the motion in the first place. That being said, Councillors are like weather vanes. They tend to point in the direction of the prevailing wind at any given moment. The key is to make sure the wind is in your favour when (or if) the critical time comes.

The Oct 11th Public Works & Infrastructure agenda is now out, and motorcycle parking is not on it. It's a fairly small agenda, so I hope this means the issue has been allowed to fall off the table. I'll continue to keep an eye on things, but I think the best strategy right now is to let sleeping Councillors lie, especially if you aren't sure they are on side. The last thing we want is for 1 of them to remind staff that they have not reported back.

Agreed. I won't act unless it's actually on the table for vote.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Thanks for keeping track of this.

Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam is in Ward 27, Toronto Centre-Rosedale = University&Queen up to Moore&Beltline

Councillor Mike Del Grande is in Ward 39, Scarborough-Agincourt = Victoria Ave&Steeles down to West Highland&CNR

So if they are your councillors, let them know that this is a bad idea.

For instance, how can we attach a parking receipt?

For instance, motorcycles are efficient, effective, and take very little space when parked.

I work in Wong-Tam's ward and tried to talk reason. She said that she was against the free on-street parking in pay & display areas because it promoted the parking of large motorcycles on sidewalks, so she clearly isn't operating on logic.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

It's almost been a year since this came up. Staff seem happy to let this slide, and it appears that Councillors Del Grande & Wong-Tam have forgotten about it. Right now, I think silence is our best strategy.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Agreed, let sleeping dogs lie. When the dog wakes, give it the Old Yeller treatment, though.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

The November 14th agenda is out, and still no report. So far, so good. Next meeting is January 23rd.
