Motorcycle Parking Fees Recommended without Notice or Public Consultation

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Well based on how things are going, in City Hall, for God's sake please don't get Rob Ford on our side!

Come on, if he's on our side, he might even take up riding. Don't you think an image of our Mayor riding squid on a 600cc supersport would help the cause!:lmao:

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

The way city council is operating now, anything Rob Ford supports, they well vote the opposite. If Ford wants free bike parking, council will be against it then double the fees.

The moment that he swung a leg over, Council would ban bikes from the downtown core.

This isn't a Ford-bashing thread, stay on topic or go to Romper Room.

Sorry, didn't realize there were people out there who will still admit to having voted for Ford. I guess you guys are feeling a bit sensitive these days.

Considering that I'm the guy who has actually been dealing with the City on this issue and keeping the forum up-to-date on it's status, you don't need to remind me about staying on topic. Besides, when you have to deal with City Hall on a regular basis these days, you end up with 2 choices, sarcasm or depression. Maybe we should have the moderators of this forum install a sarcasm filter. All sarcastic post will be sent to the Romper Room thread.

Dude, Face is the guy with all the inside scoop and connections. Maybe you should be the one to leave this thread.

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Can he influence the outcome? Does he have a vote?

Well, so far I've taken the 12 forum pages of issues that everyone has raised when this issue first surfaced and summarized them in a letter to staff. I also raised all the rationale used to support the free motorcycle parking when it was approved in 2005, and have had discussions with staff about all these issues. I've spoken with the office of an influential Councillor on Public Works and Infrastructure about staff's lack of public consultation, creating a reason to have it referred back to staff should they bring a report forward. Basically I've put them on notice that they are in for a fight should recommendations to implement a charge for motorcycles be brought forward. I'm hoping this is part of the reason that staff are letting this slide. Now, I'm just keep an eye on things in case it pops up, but with any luck, it should die a slow and natural death.

If it does pop up, we will only get about a week notice so we will have to act quickly. Lots of calls to Councillors, lots of people showing up at Committee. Personal descriptions of how people are impacted, plus pointing out issues that staff missed will be important considerations. The best strategy will be to get them to refer it back to staff for public consultation. That's easier than getting them to overturn a staff recommendation on the floor of Committee. Hopefully it won't get that far, but if it does, we will need to rally the troops. RetroGrouch, I hope you'll make yourself available to show up to Committee to support the cause. You'll be allowed 5 minutes to speak. Who knows, if you're eloquent, you may have more influence than you think!

+1 Appreciate the effort to keep us informed. Any updates? Hopefully not....

Re: City council voting on getting rid of free parking for motorcycles today

Its a perk people in most cities don't have (Free motorcycle parking). I would be happy if Hamilton had free parking but they are shaking change out of old people just to keep things running here.

I wouldn't have a problem paying if it was done by license place and credit card. Having a flimsy slip that anyone can take doesn't make any sense.

Montreal has payment by parking spot # and credit card but motorbike parking is still free. They even designate motorcycle-specific parking spots on the street.

Even better. They have the foresight to encourage motorcycles and reduce congestion. I wouldn't expect foresight from the City of Toronto at this time.

It's not just about congestion and the environment, but also about safety. I was motivated to begin riding this year when I found out there was free parking. Before that, I had no idea! I suspect that holds true for the vast majority of Torontonians. The more riders on the road, the more motorists become accustomed to our presence, the safer it is to ride for everyone. We should stay extra vigilant to ensure we don't lose this priveledge.

Montreal seems to have a lot more bikes than Toronto (don't know the actual numbers, but saw a lot more on the streets). I definitely felt safer there. The " no right turn on red" law also gave me one less hazard to watch for at intersections.

They are more "European" and we are more "Yankee"
