Minimum Wage Increase

Let me go dig through my files this week @GreyGhost and can get you actual numbers. I believe (it's been a while) we're signed up for a 25-30 year term insurance.

The way I see it, at that stage in life I'm (hopefully) out of any type of debts and won't need insurance any longer. Until then...
Your numbers are close enough for me. Wife finally got a full-time permanent job (long story but she was stuck on contract for years) and we are getting a price though work and at least one from outside.

Can confirm. Because of my previous health issue, I had to sign up for a 'no exam' type of insurance, and then sign up for an 'exam' type of insurance.

First question 'have you been rejected for insurance in the past?' and if the answer is 'yes' you don't get insurance.

Had to do blood work, discussions with surgeon and family doctor, and multiple calls to the specialist that is handling my case to confirm cancer free and no other issues.

The worst deal out there is life insurance as part of your mortgage. Rates usually stay flat but it pays out less each month as the mortgage gets paid down!
Agree entirely with that. It's also normally a pretty crappy rate so even on day one you are bent over and it just goes downhill from there. The last time I looked at numbers, mortgage insurance was ~$13/month/100K of original mortgage amount.

I sign up for the mortgage insurance so my broker can get the commission, and then promptly cancel as you can cancel before the first payment with no repercussion to him.

He's also the guy that is protecting me from myself for borrowing additional money without actually needing it.

My wife is self-employed so while her income is very small (still ****** I didn't go for CERB) she'd never be able to carry the mortgage without the insurance I leave behind.
$500,000 + 1x my salary + survivor benefits from my gov't pension = fair stability for a long while while she finds a replacement for me.

And she has clear instructions to sue everyone involved if anything happens to me near the job site. Anyone and everyone even remotely connected to be sued for wrongful death...

mortgage insurance as others said is a terrible deal, get real life insurance with enough to cover the mortgage , expenses and replace your income for years. Its pricey up front but you can pull that back as the mortgage geos away, kids graduate and leave.

remember public schools offering insurance policies for kids? what a scam , kids are a huge liability and a sucking sound, you protect assets , not that. Just throw it to the missus and get another kid.

...
Why is living in a 1500 SF house in Peterborough (City water, transit, stores, hospital, police, fire, ambulance , schools, fresh air, parks, etc) a lower standard than living in Toronto?
I think it depends on what you're accustomed to. I've done urban, suburban, and rural small city and while each has its pros and cons, small city life doesn't provide the same standard as Toronto. Dining, entertainment, transportation, employment opportunity, arts, medical care...

The school kid insurances are crap. They have it down to a price per part, $XX for a finger, $XYZ for an eye etc.

However one should think about long term disability if the kid is into risky sports.

A know a family that had a normal kid until he was 4-5 YO and a medical error stopped brain growth. A lawsuit brought in dollars but at a special camp the now adult offspring fell due to a momentary lapse of attention and a brain bleed has him in a wheelchair for life. The parents are in their late 60's and picking up the tab for special vehicles, stair lifts etc. Fortunately there are responsible siblings but the money boat has sailed.

We had to sign up for those as kids are basically required to have insurance to attend school (otherwise excluded from almost every activity that is not sitting at a desk all the way to no walking with the class). We didn't have insurance through an employer. It was ~$30/year/kid for the medical plus life plus disability coverage. Life is $30K, disability is $350K. Better than a kick in the teeth. If you could avoid spending a bunch of the 350K on immediate accommodations, that could spit out a reasonable amount of money throughout the kids life. Not enough on its own, but a solid supplement.

One of my wifes friends is a Physio. She has more than a few patients that were healthy, smart people that were going places and hit their head and that set the peak of their life progress.

EDIT:
Since he brought it up, a finger is $1500 and an eye is $30,000.

I was just looking at things and they have many opportunities to separate you from your money.

Life premium:$0.00
Critical Illness premium:$0.00
Disability premium:$0.00
Job Loss premium:$0.00

I have no idea what they charge for each of those but I can be sure that paying all of them will add quite a few years to the end of your mortgage (assuming you have xxxx dollars monthly to pay for mortgage and related expenses).

EDIT:
I found a rate table. They vary with age.

For a 41-45 yo, monthly premium for life is $33/100K of mortgage, critical illness is $47/100K of mortgage, disability is $29.50/$1000 monthly. Prices go up ~25% every five years older when you apply. Average canadian mortgage is 355K so life plus illness would be $284/mo (they give you a 10% discount for multiple products and 5% discount for multiple people so $454.40/mo for an insured couple.). Forget years, this adds decades to a mortgage. This is assuming no disability coverage (harder to predict what people want monthly) and no job loss protection (that's almost always a steaming turd when it is offered).

In one job I had i could not get included in the company life insurance through the business because I participated in what was considered 'high risk' activities.

At current company , we ( the decision makers) all travel and enjoy a mix of stuff so lets have the million dollars ins. and cover international travel whether work or pleasure. Its not free but its just comes out of the giant pot of corporate money.

How much insurance for death is an easy one, your dead, make family ok for a while as they figure it out. Disability is a whole other conversation, how long could you live and how much can in home nursing cost for 35yrs? Does a million get that done? I sure dont know.

If there’s a fallen riders post I’ll watch for the news article on the lawsuit!

I was talking about work related incidents...but sure...I'll update the discussion with the wife!

'Ya hun, anything happens to me go after @Evoex and @danp'
'who are they?'
'I dunno, just some randos. I'm sure they'd never leave me on the side of the road'

She was actually pretty upset last time I went for a long ride as 'I have no clue where you went, who you're with, and if something happened where would I point the cops to start looking?'

They're valid points.

On a long wandering ride, providing a clear search area is difficult. For peace of mind, get an inreach. She can always find you and you can get her simple messages even if outside of cell coverage.

From:

$460 per day in a hospice bed (2014) = $167900 / year
A million gets you about six years, or more depending on how the million is invested

There's probably an app you can install on your phone that lets another person know where you are, or your last known position if you go where there are no cell towers.

Isn't there a way I can share location from my phone to hers? Me being out of cell phone range is VERY unlikely.

You arent in palliative care for years. Ltc is mostly government funded. You can easily spend six figures a year on quality of life improvements like physio/massage/someone to read to them/someone to help them with daily tasks without having to wait for overrun ltc staff.

When my wife worked in ltc, there were a few residents in their 30s and 40s. Physically reasonably healthy (some in wheelchairs but no ailment that will substantially shorten their life), mentally hurt. Their families could not care for them at home so they will be in the system for decades. It sucks.

I can locate my wifes phone at any time. It notifies her that I did it. I use it occasionally if she has been on a run for too long. No need to call her. We used to use Wheres my droid as it had some cool features (like being able to locate device from any phone) but an android update cut its legs out. Now use Find Device built into Android.
