Well I think i am pretty happy with society as a whole when there is time to complain about what to call Christmas, instead of real problems.
That being said I say happy holidays a lot, because I interact with a lot of jewish people, but I am not necessarily sure who is what. So i want to say something that means something to them personally.
The truth is. if someone says.. happy hanukka to me. it just doesn't mean anything. All it tells me is that they are jewish. So when i say it to someone else, I want it to be applicable to whoever they are.. So happy holidays is simply faster than saying "happy xmas/hanukka/yule/ramadan or whatever floats your boat"
In my view, the point of saying merry christmas or happy holidays is to convey to them that you wish them well. So it should be communicated and adjusted depending on the recipent.
THe people that insist on saying Christmas because "thats what it is" is more concerned about telling ppl that they like Christmas, rather than conveying the well meaning thoughts to the other person.
