Now im not in the slightest bit religious. But i still wish people a merry christmas

and It's always going to be a christmas tree.

its sad that someone might be offended by calling it a christmas tree.

back in the day, if someone complained about it, they would have been punched in the stomach.

Merry Christmas!!! If people don't like it, personally I don't care...

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, if you do not celebrate Christmas then Happy holidays to you. If Christmas offends you well go lock yourself in your house for a month or two.

welcome to canada....be a canadian eh... or get the f out! quit diluting our heritige...

Ummmm I am Canadian, my dads side came over in the 1600 and my moms in the 1700.... Dad from France and Mom from England and France. I call it a holiday tree. Don't believe in the whole religious side of christmas but unlike some I won't be offending it you say merry christmas to me.

Jeremiah 10:1-5 in the Bible says the following:
[1] Hear what the Lord says to you, O house of Israel. [2] This is what the Lord says: "Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the sky, though the nations are terrified by them. [3] For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. [4] They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. [5] Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good."

Sound's like the bible is saying putting up a tree and decorating it is against god. it looks like yet another pagan tradition has been co-opted by the Xians.

In addition to that Christmas trees were not put up at the vatican until the 1980s...

+1 to both.

i'll say both merry christmas and christmas tree, but unlike others, won't be offended if someone else finds the terms offensive.

how is it that:

1. for a holiday that supposedly celebrates a benevolent, kind and understanding jesus, the messiah, we instead get "if you don't follow the 'christian' customs, get out"???

2. for a holiday that supposedly celebrates the birth of the saviour, so many people are instead caught up with the language and labels, instead of the spirit of the occasion?

3. for a holiday that supposedly celebrates god's son on earth, we are fixated on a symbol that afaik, was not positively correlated with him, and is in fact most likely a carry-over from paganistic saturnalia celebrations focusing on greenery--wreaths, garlands etc, trees topped with sun/star symbols, etc.

is it possible that people are not actually aware of what the heck they are bitching about? or do they just want a little cheese with their whine???

Nobody's asking you or anyone else to follow Christian customs or doctrine... what we are asking is for non-Christians to stop trying to undermine and destroy them. Big difference.

Same here. Merry Xmas to you and to all those who aren't offended by that sentiment.

I'm atheist, but "Christmas" doesn't offend me, it's just a name. Just like Thanksgiving, Easter, April fools day, gotta call it something.
Saying it's the day Jesus was born isn't against my beliefs, I have none. The pictures of the kid in straw with a goat and a donkey looking in are nice.

http://www.town.innisfil.on.ca/members-council Dunno, but they look like "real Canadians". One of them even has a mullet. They voted it.

They likely voted it, in fear of being called a bigot.

That is the real reason why so many Canadians are so "pokitically correct". Lets be honest. Political Correctness doesn't change the way a bigot feels in his heart, it just changes what he shows to the world on the outside.

what do you think the gist of post #3 is?

like i wrote before, i have no problem saying both merry xmas or xmas tree, and i can understand and respect the other viewpoint as well, but my question is, at what point does our society accurately reflect its composition? will we all continue celebrating solely christian holidays in our calendar when it represents 30% of our population? 20%? 10%?

is canada a monolithic structure with a dogmatic adherence to the past?

Christmas is a religious holiday. Without religion there wouldn't be a holiday.

You may be a mod but that is just about the most retarded statement I have ever read on the internet. Christmas is a religious holiday. Without religion there wouldn't be a holiday.
Wrong! Research the "holiday" my friend.

What I find odd, is that I have NEVER met anyone offended by saying "merry christmas". Never. Who are we trying to please?
And Happy Holidays was originally meant to mean both Merry Christmas and Happy New Years, so it's not about being politically correct.

You don't hang out with many "fresh off the boat" Muslims do you?

“I find it kind of pathetic that they'd say to people, 'Come see our holiday tree,'” said Spring. “We gave them a Christmas tree, they asked the kids to decorate it like a Christmas tree. That's what it is.”

Couldn't have said it better myself
