I bet Pence and McConnell (can't believe I'm saying that) and perhaps a few other advisers read him the riot act:
- You need to condemn the violence.
- You need to concede that you lost the election. (came close to doing that, probably as close as we will see)
- You need to commit to a peaceful transfer of power.
- You must NOT say anything about the election being unfair, or stolen, or fraudulent, or anything of the sort.
- And you have to do this right . this . moment.
- And if you fail, we are going to support both a 25th Amendment removal and an impeachment tomorrow.
- Now let's sit down and write up what you are going to say.
And there's a good chance that he's also under orders to not mention election fraud again.
This might be why Twitter did not permanently suspend his account ... I'm sure phone calls have been made. Certainly someone will be watching. We shall find out soon enough.

He used twitter to distribute the same (or at least a very similar) message. I didn't bother looking at it but apparently it was posted earlier today. I hope he can maintain his conciliatory tone in public for another few weeks (and ideally forever, just move on old man).
not sure about that.....his last sentence more or less is “this is only the beginning”.

After all this ... I have a hard time believing the Republicans would allow him to run again. He may try, but I doubt it will happen.
But what would not surprise me ... is a hard split of the Republican party into a moderate-conservative but constitution-respecting part, and a Trumpian part.
If that happens, then unless the Democrats completely screw up (and that's not impossible ...) there won't be another Republican (or whatever they end up calling themselves) government due to the split between the moderate-conservative and far-right, until one or the other goes away.
The existence of two completely separate versions of "facts", with neither side acknowledging the other, is a dangerous situation. US media has some responsibility for this. Social media has some responsibility for this. Free speech does not mean freedom of responsibility for what you say. I don't think this lesson has been adequately learned.
US democracy is still at great risk, perhaps slightly less risk now than up until yesterday morning. The method by which it can be broken, is now public knowledge, and that's dangerous.

He can be impeached now or after he leaves...if that happens then he is ineligible to run again. Impeaching him now will force the republicans to make a choice...so it’s politically astute. Impeaching him later will have the upside of having the house and senate onside but at the risk of appearing vindictive.
I don’t see how they have much choice but to impeach. You can’t just let this happen...it’s about as serious as it gets.
So it is an auction but a BS one.

Something weird about that one. He returned to the station, then felt that something was wrong and went to the hospital and died. Medical episode? It certainly was a stressful event. Did he actually have an injury like a wound that he didn't notice until pulling off some of his gear? Whatever happened it sucks.
One person shot, cop died for undisclosed reasons and apparently three medical deaths.
I felt bad for the cops in that situation. It really was no win for them.
There has been discussion in the media that pro Republican cops called in sick and some on duty didn't push back as hard as they could have during the mob rush.

Very close to none, if not exactly none. I watched this go down live on BBC World News. There was scarcely a coloured skin to be seen in the crowd. This was Donald Trump's "base" ... mostly white, mostly male, mostly low-information voters. A number of participants have been identified - their names are known - as known members of the Proud Boys (white supremacists), QAnon (Trump-worshipping conspiracy theorists), extremist NRA members (heavy-duty Trump supporters), and so forth. These are not groups to look up to. They're scum.
"Antifa" = "anti-fascist" = leftist = not this group.
Bear in mind that there is a faction of the population who engage in civil disturbance, regardless of cause. That faction will show up for riots regardless of what's behind the riot, and thus those people may have been present at other riots.
There is a very good chance that the reason for the USA not being involved in wars or international terrorism events for the last four years is that the various prospective terrorist groups and so forth saw that the USA was doing a better job of imploding than they could ever do. The world is watching.
There may be some truth to that.
