Lightcycle's New Ride

Fortnine with some relevant, if anecdotal, info

Focusing just on the engine doesn't even begin to tell the whole story of whether a motorcycle will strand you at the side of the road or not.

I've had experiences with a lot of the manufacturers on that list. None of them have ever blown an engine due to contaminants wearing down the internals.

Instead, I've had electrical and electronic components fail, fuel pumps, stators, regulator/rectifiers, shaft drive, clutches, gaskets, spokes, the list of trip-ending, non-engine failures go on and on and on.

Worst motorcycle I've ever ridden was one that I had to get on my hands and knees to repair *every single day* of the two weeks that I rented it.

It was a Royal Enfield.

#1 on the list of best motorcycle manufacturer in the above video...

Congrats @Lightcycle, need more pics later on!

Is the 40yr colour scheme out here? I like it, though more and more, it looks like a Touratech version lol

I was looking at the multis and read some models were to be avoided because of DVT weirdness and flatspots ...thought it was only certain years, then I watched that Zack and ari comparison only to find out its still a thing

Wonder how the middleweights are
(Guzzi v85, tiger 900, multi950, tracer GT)

Argh, so many options

Effects the 15-17 1200's but it isn't noticeable in most riding scenarios. Remap fixes it easy enough if it really bothers you.

Lightcycle the MTS has an Urban mode that drops the suspension height down approx 10mm. Maybe the BMW has something similar.

Just saw an ad with a gs1250 flying down the trails. Looks like we share the same integrated rear brake/turn signals. Don’t smash one, you’ll cry at the cost.

lol

BMW's have always had this feature. It's called kicking the bike over and walking away from it when you're tired of picking it up on the trail. It drops the ride height down to a manageable level.

Just saying, choose the right bike for the job. A BMW weighs way too much. The curb weight of a Niken is 11 lbs lighter than a GS.

11
whole
pounds.

Just let that sink in. And if you need something else, the Niken has a seat height that's an inch lower. An inch.

I don't understand GS owners. Keep your tanks on the freeway and keep the trails clear for those of us on appropriate machines.

[/funny]

If a GS gets a milk crate, it automatically gains 10" of ground clearance and sheds 100 lbs

Yeah, and it's not just the rear lights that are expensive to replace. Pretty much everything is. If a rock takes out your headlights, it's $2500 CAD to replace. ?

Suffice to say, I have a headlight guard on order.

So you're saying the Niken is a better choice because yours is going to get much heavier by the time it is sufficiently protected?

The seat height doesn't bother me. My other ride has a 38" seat height, so 34" is relatively low for me.

I did try to play around with the suspension today. The bike has an auto-levelling feature that "detects" the weight on the rear, ie. passenger, luggage, etc, and automatically adjusts the pre-load to compensate. No more knobs to turn.

However, I couldn't take it off auto and max the pre-load to see if it drops the ride height. Was trying to do this at a stoplight, maybe the engine needs to be off?

Need to pore over the owners manual more.

I thought I was done with studying after university...

All GS owners know that there are three different figures for weight:

dry weight: bike without all liquids and battery.
wet weight: curb weight when running stock.
farkle weight: curb weight after all the mods have been installed.

Last number is a constantly changing figure as farkles get added and deleted over the lifetime of the bike...

Congrats @Lightcycle, need more pics later on!

Here are some quick snaps I took today when I got back from my ride.

Currently, the bike is completely stock because all the various parts are on backorder due to supply-chain COVID issues. It'll be at least a couple of months before all the farkles arrive and are installed.

Sweet ride, judging from the looks of the background you seem to have some interesting places to ride (y), and it looks like spring!
