Perhaps police dogs should be trained to never see children as a threat if thats possible.

How about just keeping police tools like Glocks, tazers, batons and dogs a safe distance from children?

If it was my or your dog, it would now be quarantined and waiting for a needle, no investigation.
And it is kinda obvious the handler DID NOT have control, no investigation needed, he should be demoted

On the news a few years ago a family pet, a breed known for it's docile nature, mauled one of the family kids.

I mentioned the event to a veterinarian that I knew and she related a theory that some vets consider. Dogs, descending from hunting packs communicate by barks, yips and yaps. A mechanical noise from a squeaky hinge could mimic an attack signal. It happens so rarely it remains a theory.

The bottom line is that dogs, unless trained to be aggressive, rarely cause a problem and are more predictable than humans.

In hindsight, I question the wisdom of taking a thing, designed or modified to mete out serious injury, to interact with excitable children. An empty handgun can still pinch a finger.

Not police related but this nut job in Hamilton.

Refund the police dogs? Seriously though, police thinking needs a revamp. It seems they rely on an immediate show of force but that doesn't always work with disturbed people and most of the people they deal with are disturbed.

It's not an easy transition and every confrontation has different psychological elements.

Hard to not be concerned about the dog handlers judgment in bringing an animal that they did not have proper control of to an elementary school for a greet and meet.
Read the Hamilton story who would have thought that tasers kill very many dogs....

Its a dog. The kid startled it by either falling on it or near it (depending on who you believe) and the dog reacted like a dog would. Whats to investigate?

For starters..
They need to look at the dog's history and the decision to have it in a classroom full of children.

Why would it be "on" in a classroom full of children?
The handler failed!

When the officer is in uniform and the dog has his vest/collar on it is "on" (working). The dog doesn't know the difference between going to a school for show and tell or going to a school to search for an armed intruder. It just knows when it's working vs. when it's not.

I want to hear the whole story. I suspect the kid tripped and fell into the dog. You can't touch them when they're working.

these are not show and tell dogs

They can be, but there are caveats. Bringing the kids up at this particular show and tell was a stupid idea. The dog is predictable. The kids aren't.
My vet has a charity dog wash on Canada Day. It's out back of the vet office and HRP brings in dogs for a demo. A Dutch Shepherd and a Lab. Before the dogs come out someone from the vet gets on the mic and tells everyone DO NOT APPROACH THE DOGS. The demo goes fine. Everyone applauds, the dogs go back in the SUVs and leave. No problem. That said, no one ever lost money betting on the stupidity of people. Double that for children.

Legally, Is the K9 dog a weapon, as mentioned above like a gun, tazer, club etc?
If the dog starts biting me for what ever reason, do I have to right to use any force necessary to protect myself?

Legally a K9 is a police officer. You have the same rights as you would if you were resisting arrest by a human officer.

Does that mean 3 year vacation @ $100k + benefits while the union puts together a defense?

these are not show and tell dogs, they are a highly trained combat unit
You could also liken them to a bear trap. Be careful how you handle them.

In Amish Ohio my wife wanted a picture of a horse and was walking up behind it while it was wearing blinkers. I had to yell at her to stop as the horse was getting agitated. She was about to find out what a soccer ball felt like.

Most animals have phobias. Walt Disney was a con artist.
