What about COPS on the phone?

What's going on? I see so many COPS on the phone when they drive by.
Isn't it time to start snapping shots of these guys and getting them charged.
I hate when they think they are holier than though, when they pull you over, they make you feel like a hardened criminal for talking on the phone.
How can they give us tickets when they do it themselves?
Don't get me wrong. I don't think talking on the phone is OK.
I don't do it myself.
Why can they do it and still give tickets for doing the exact same thing???????

Re: What about COPS on the phone?

Because they are exempted:

16. Are there exemptions for emergency services workers and other commercial drivers?
A. Police and emergency services:
• Police, fire department and emergency medical services personnel may continue to use hand-held wireless communications devices and view display screens in the performance of their duties.
• Provincial offences officers and municipal by-law enforcement officers will be able to use two-way radios and view display screens in the performance of their duties.
• Commercial and public service workers:
• Commercial and public service vehicle drivers who are engaged in the performance of their duties will be able to view the display screens of mobile data terminals and logistical tracking and dispatching devices.
• There was a three-year phase-out period for the use of hand-held, two-way radios for commercial purposes which has now been extended for an additional five years (to January 1, 2018), to allow for the development of a hands-free solution. This includes both mobile and Citizens’ Band (CB) radios. Two-way radios have a separate receiver unit that is connected to a hand-held microphone. The extended five-year phase-out also applies to amateur radio operators, who provide assistance in emergency situations such as severe storms and blackouts.

Re: What about COPS on the phone?

Because if it's for emergency purposes, they can talk. Just like when they run red lights.

Try justifying 'emergancy' though, goodluck.

Re: What about COPS on the phone?

It's always an emergency when they have to talk to their girlfriends on the phone?

Yes, because they can't talk to the GF when at home with the wife and kids. Duh!

Re: What about COPS on the phone?

It really annoys me when I see workers at a store getting employee discounts, or certain professions (like Teachers) getting discounts at Staples, Bankers getting good mortgage/loan rates... etc.. LOL. With this in mind, policing certainly must have its benefits. My recommendation is to look at it that way, and not stress over the matter. I guarantee the cops are not talking on the phone just to spite you.

Re: What about COPS on the phone?

One of the changes that would get made when I become dictator, is that all protections and benefits for public employees that the general public doesn't get, would either be revoked or granted to the general public, so that everyone is treated equally.

Ain't gonna happen.

No, it's not right.

Why become dictator when you can become premier? Bad-Dum-Tish! Still, I'd vote for you, if it were possible to vote for a (benign) dictator who loves motorcycles. Dedicated motorcycle lanes everywhere, right? Wonder how many civil servants would jump ship when they discovered real accountability was on the table.

Re: What about COPS on the phone?

Every week I see at least a dozen cops on their phones cruising facebook while driving. It's not hard to see that blue banner and know just what they are looking at.

Must be a work related emergency.

no,they're not doing it to spite us, but they are doing it to find out if there's milk in the fridge at home.

I can't believe how often people forget that cops are suppose to be the example of law abiding behavior.

Re: What about COPS on the phone?

I've said to one.

"No matter how you look to justify it, you are putting peoples lives in jeopardy."

There are POS everywhere; they come in all sizes and wear all different types of uniforms.

Once a POS, always a POS

Re: What about COPS on the phone?

They can also read the laptops while driving, and if while doing so they crash and get killed, a full hero's funeral.

Bagman- I'm a teacher and I get discounts at staples. I spend $2000-$4000 a year of my own money on my students to make sure they have what they need. And I can't claim expenses on my taxes either. If you are so worried about discounts, ask for one! If you aren't a ********* and are nice to people, most of the time they will give you 10% off. Sorry if this comes across rude, but walk in another's footsteps for a bit before you judge.

On topic- I do not see anything wrong with police using cell phones for talking while driving. They could be taking with dispatch on what they need to do to save someone's life or getting information that is more secure than the radio when about to put their lives at risk.

I seriously doubt they are using their phones for this all the time.

We have a law for a reason. Is driving while typing on a laptop or talking on a phone safe? NO. Is it safe when a cop does it? NO.

Why can't they pull over and use these devices?

I was charged with using a cell phone while driving. In standstill traffic, I picked up my phone and synced it to my handsfree bluetooth in about 3 seconds.
In court, I showed:
1. The handsfree device
2. Data records from Rogers showing no data or phone calls for two hours before or after the stop, or during.

I was charged with using the phone. The cop said I was talking on it and ignored a verbal warning (there was no verbal warning).
I proved in court that the officer lied about me talking on the phone.

The prosecutor took an hour on this case, and kept re-interating, "why didn't you just pull over to make the call"? Complete kangaroo court.

Paid $240 in fines, $200 bump in insurance for three years, because some cop just decided to write up tickets and lie later about it.

The judge ruled that just holding a phone in hand, even if it off, breaks the law. Cops do what they want because people in Ontario hold no accountability to police and just bend over.

Especially the forum experts on being cops. Go try it for even one day and see what you have to deal with. Yes there are some bad ones but not all of them are. Same can be said for any profession. I work with ******** daily and nice people too. The whole **** the police attitude is sad and so very when you're a teenager type of mentality.
