Laid-off? GTAM Members looking-out.....???

I have recently joined the GTAM community and have spent a lot of time online checking out what people think about motorcycling, life and many other things in general and even have meet quite a few members in the process. Unfortunately every week someone mentions (not as a topic but in a post) that they have been laid-off or out of work(me included) and with the current economic climate I find it disheartening since there will be even more and the prospects of getting work now is harder.

Since I'm always thinking about my current situation, which happens to be that of many others, I'm sure GTAM members who may know of existing vacancies, if aware, may give the occasional heads-up to these vacancies where they work, a simple post maybe saying hey I work at .... and we are looking for a ..... or I know .... is looking for a ....., this could be a window to the hidden job market. I can surely say every little bit helps.
Not sure the kind of pay you’re looking for but depending on where you’re located Billy bishop and Pearson are always hiring. Pays starting to go up for us rampies but there’s tons of positions depending on your experience, sorry in advance if this doesn’t help

FYI.

edit- I did go to their job fair in Ajax and it was very informative.

It’s a union job and you work all hours, holidays through the year. It’s outside in all weather and all temperatures.

Can‘t consume the devil’s cabbage. Need a driver‘s licence that is not restricted (no G1). Need a Canadian passport and never refused entry into the USA.

Recruiter said roughly half wont bother with the interview because they won’t pass the urine/mouth swab/hair sample test for MaryJane.

It’s a physically demanding job to uncouple and couple rail cars. So you have to pass a back ground check and a medical test from the company. They handle the whole deal.

After 2/3 years as a conductor, you can try for train operator and don’t need the physical work as you operate the train. get more money too.

Max shift is 10 hours and then off 12 hours but, starting out its casual work and work all hours, shifts and jobs.

Pension and benefits are pretty sweet but, the job itself isn’t for everyone.

CP is experiencing a huge resource deficit as many employees are retiring and they have expanded operations east and south to Mexico.

Get some yard experience and there are opportunities within the company. There was 4 interviewers who all worked as conductors at one time.

Unless China collapses, moving products and materials by rail is a pretty stable gig.

One of the EAs at my school has a son who did this a few years ago...I knew him in grade 8 (I taught at the same school he went to) and he was a real *&^% disturber...barely finished high school...flitted around afterwards in low paying jobs...now, he's making huge dollars and bought his own house...I think he's mid 20s...

I knew a couple of conductors and they all loved their job.

It's sad to say but one guy actually looked forward to hitting cars/people on the tracks because then he had 'X months off fully paid due to stress leave'.

Alstom (?) is the company that is subbed out by GO Transit as the operator of the trains, so that's a start.

Hey folks, I thought I'd put it here as well. I'm not laid off or anything but I'm slowly thinking about transitioning to another job and field. Currently, I'm a Program Coordinator for a non-profit that specializes in Employment related settlement services for newcomers (refugees, new immigrants, and citizens). I studied Mechanical Engineering but my electives during my uni days were more geared to management side, so I worked in Engineering management and Project Management for close to 15 years now. I have a bit of sales and business development experience as well.

Looking for something in the media side or marketing/advertising just to switch things up. If you have any suggestions, leads or any info, I'd appreciate that and please feel free to PM me.

Let me know if anyone is qualified and I'll connect you to my hiring manager.

Now this would be a cool job for someone…not me. But someone.

Yetti - Have you looked into going after them for wrongful dismissal?

Unless you gave them a reason, union or not they still can't pull that ****.

What they don’t tell you is that when you join a union, you waive all rights to legal action - while at the company, and after you leave it. And no lawyer will touch you. Law firms will turn away your calls.

You can sue the union for misrepresentation, but that’s a hard one.

In this now with both the company and the union, dragging on for years. Lawyers have advised that if it was private sector, I would have had a case and settlement years ago, but within unionized workplaces you are stuck in a tar pit - either leave and suck an egg, or stay and continue grinding away while the agitators know there’s nothing you or anyone else can do about it.

Grey are you angry about the situation, or about the way that unions are being presented?

That situation.

In general, I have a strong dislike for unions though. In some cases where management screws employees, I understand how they got established. Once established though, they are just leaches that don't care about the company or employees, they exist to maximize compensation for the union. That being said, in the private sector, they can exist or not, I don't really care. Ideally, management would treat employees well and there would be no desire to bring in a union (and give up a percentage of pay to them). We know this often doesn't happen though.

Public Sector Unions are a pox on society and should not exist. The jobs are secure, compensated well above the rate in the private sector and safety is pretty well locked down. The PSU are just a legalized avenue to extort the public.

For instance, OPP union has a stated policy of being the highest paid officers in the province. Management could make that statement (and follow it) and the union would have little need to exist (I think Honda does something similar to this approach). As it is, the unions primary goal is to keep every dirtbag on the payroll forever as that maximizes the union income.

There's an opening in my team for an infrastructure architect / solutions engineer. The Kubernetes and public cloud migration experience are hard requirements, so please don't apply if you don't have that. If you're comfortable with sending me your resume, I can give you feedback on your chances and then hand it directly to my director who is making the hiring decision. Otherwise, you can just go through LinkedIn:

Ken's Motoworks was looking for a part time helper back in June because the previous one(s) didn't work out. Not sure if he still is, but worth checking. It sounds like a cool job I'd do when I retire, if it were closer.
Sounds like a good side gig to get my valves checked!
