Knee jerk reply. .the Nordic countries do better for their citizens - staying high on the GINI list while competitive in business.
Let me guess - you have not read the links?
"Other people's money".....you do understand what the "soci" in society stands for.
Thing is, I want to take care of myself. I don't want to be taken care of. For instance. If given the choice I probably would have opted out of CPP many years ago and took responsibly for my own financial future.
When my first child was born, the hospital gave us forms to fill out for the baby bonus. I didn't want it. I'll pay for my own kids.
Their philosophy works for them. I'm not knocking it if thats what they want. I don't.
It works great, ask around in Cuba , oh nevermind, ask the Soviet Union, oh yeah skip them .
lets trot out Norway and Scandinavia , I dont live there either. I'm a fairly dyed in the wool capitalist .
I see no advantage to a guaranteed wage scenario , and no amount of scocio liberal bleeding is doing anything for anyone but politicains , sorry to be blunt

I understand the sentiment but if you take the free money it will be used well. Leave it on the table and some politician scoops it. it would be better spent locally to support local merchants.

Agreed. Sadly, money left with government is squandered. By accepting it, you can push it to people/organizations you personally believe it would benefit (or save it for your kids or ...).

you could write a doctorate thesis on whether money taken by politicians and returned to the economy in large parcels , massive cheques to consulting firms and billion dollar contracts to ship builders , or $100 cheques to moms and pops are radically different. That million dollar contract does employ hundreds , that live locally . And it does go into the pockets of uber wealthy , that then buy great cars and build cottages , and that money returns to the smaller folk.

A new Oxfam report finds the pandemic has aggravated inequality, as the world's richest have made massive gains while the world's poor have fallen further behind.

Canada Goose , Arc’teryx, lululemon? Probably a dozen more . Pajar ?
cdn lux brands that come to mind quickly.
Id hope not to see someone that just cashed a wage equity cheque in the Arc’teryx’s store, but their business what they do with the top up . A warm jacket is likely a better investment than lottery tickets and a daily round of double doubles .

Not so sure about that, I think money will concentrate in the hands of those who learn how to make money.
The pandemic handouts are a pretty good example of how direct handouts to the masses can really **** things up. It stimulated massive consumption which contributed to supply chain chaos, then pushed up the price of goods. The recipients of those massive direct benefits are now feeling the pain of surging inflation and rising interest rates, and they saved nothing.
This time the rich got no tax breaks, the poor got enormous direct compensation.
And the rich got richer. Richer, faster than any time in history.
Depending on your definition of rich, that is very wrong. Private golf courses/ski hills got huge handouts that trickled down to their affluent members. Private corps got wage subsidies while experiencing their busiest time ever. A little paperwork and owners expenses get cut in half while gross income rises. That's a hell of a lot more than CERB.

Also, those huge supports also kept the markets from crashing. My lawyer converted his investments to cash, thinking it was all going to hell. Big mistake and he knows it.
the handouts to those that applied were pretty gracious, from a business and not for profit standpoint, no idea about the personal cerb. Most GTA 'clubs' got between 60 and 180K in grants and subsidies.

I agree that sharp operators saw JT's money cannon and took full advantage, but that's not really the argument I'm making. Businesses did get help offsetting payroll and rents, but that was supposed to be a flow through, in the great scheme of things, business owners didn't win much from the handouts -- certainly not enough to drive consumption -- that was CERB, EI and related direct benefits.
I suspect some of the business cheaters ended up with some additional wealth from their handouts, but I suspect the increase of their wealth was more related to the inflation of their assets and the circulation of more than $100B in CERB and other direct welfare. Those funds, along with billions in unpaid rents drove up the cost of everything as more money chased fewer goods.
And you can't simply blame supply chain for this -- look at the stupid prices for 20 year old toys -- supply chain didn't factor there.
Wait, at the beginning of the pandemic wasn't the general population told they are destroying the economy because they were saving their money? Now we spend too much. We just can't get it right. I really don't understand why we are entrusted with money. Serfdom is so much better for the economy.
Wouldn’t it be handy to have a monthly printout , spend this and save the economy, save this amount and your future is secure . You’ll never run out and things will be just fine.
Just like Scandinavia !
See you can make jokes about socialism, but only if everyone gets it !
