Inflation

Since we have full thyread drift, never go cheap on any fitting , doing insurance surveys I find 14/2 solid copper wire in 120V electrical systems , home depot brass ball valves on thruhull plumbing , speaker wire running up masts , grounding systems connected to air. One of my favorites , 120V electrical grounded to the engine block.
Stray electrical current kills a few people every yr in Canada in marinas, dont swim in the marina ......

Never go cheap on anything that plugs a hole in the hull below the waterline. CTC hose clamps etc.
Strainers are fitted above the waterline.

Would be fun to watch a strainer clean on one installed too low.

Some 'positive' news this morning regarding inflation and it's current effects...

How long you guys figure before the poo really hits the fan?

@Jampy00 , every boat engine has an inline strainer, but I have never seen one fail. I guess if you have the cheaper acrylic and plastic versions you could strip the threads on a lid , but you would need to be pretty hamfisted. All the better units are made by Perko and bronze shelled with a glass insert, cork gaskets top and bottom , stainless strainer. They last 100yrs and all parts are available, in Canada. I've had boats with plastic, still working when I sold them off, if I ever needed a replacement it woud be Perko.
Interesting, other than "I'm using it on my boat" I don't typically get a lot of information. So perhaps my assumption for what they are being used for is incorrect? I have never had a complaint or return due to failure. I would consider my products to be of high quality compared to the 1000's of knock-offs you find on EBAY etc..

This is a boat that sank at the dock when it was not properly winterized and the glass perko stainer broke .
It was pumped out and refloated in about 2hrs . I fixed the strainer .
Cheapo clamps also sink a lot of boats . Usually at the dock .

I saw the picture before I read the comments. Gee, that boat doesn't have a lot of freeboard.

Isn't dock water less corrosive than racing or open lake water?

Other than mopping and bailing, what stuff got damaged? Cushions, woodwork?

Cushions and woodwork all dried , she sank bow down when the keel settled on the bottom so the engine sat above water , transmission was screwed , starter motor and alt, and the entire wiring harness was compromised. About 20k for a small boo-boo.

@jammpy , there are about a million fishing boats that use strainers and filters on live wells and fish holding tanks . Maybe some of your gear is going there . You should ask , it’s a massive market .

I've had discussions in the past, as much as I enjoy the conversation it tends to take up more time than the product is worth. (I don't mean this in a rude way)
Selling things for fishing boats is not my business, but inline strainers can have a million uses.
I know people that use these to filter water, booze, fuel, ozone, you name it I've filtered it... LOL

Hope you relocated the strainer to the correct altitude - I always make sure they are well above the waterline,. That makes for easier access for cleaning as you don't need to get into the bilge to close the seacock. Should the strainer fail, the boat won't flood (as shown above!)

Value??

There was a news item about a Viking 28 moored out in IIRC Hamilton Harbour, appearing abandoned but in reasonable shape. It apparently had a decent history in racing until the 90 year old owner sold it. Then it passed through a few hands and there is speculation that the present owner has either lost interest in the boat or lost interest in spending the required coin to keep it in a manner it had become accustomed. (Mortgage renewal?)

Dumped boats are a problem in many areas.

What would be a typical budget for a 28-30 footer? I budgeted $5K a year for an older Chris Craft, dockage, fuel, insurance and maintenance but that was ten years ago.

Being an older boat it seems the values are extremely low, mid four figures.

Salvage parts are minimal so scrapping it would cost. Unlike a car where there is recyclable metals, fiberglass is pay to transport and dump.

Poor people can't afford to keep boats that can't be trailered. Rich people don't want old boats.

There are a large number of people who cheated CERB and Landlords during the pandemic. CERB was horribly abused, and so were landlords who were prohibited from evicting non-paying tenants - combine the two and we find hundreds of thousands in government-enabled debt.

If I had to guess, those bankruptcies are largely consumer proposals - the happy ********* debt relief peddled in jingly radio commercials from MNP, Spergel, BDO, Hoyes, 310 Debt, etc. Deadbeats can file proposals to unload most of their CERB and landlord debts -- the debt relief vultures are in a feeding frenzy -- gorging on deadbeats as fast as they can.

Pretty much everything in Ontario waters needs water strainers for engine cooling, washdown, AC. I have 4 on my boat, one for each motor, one for the AC, and one for the washdown & head water pump.

Zebra mussels, grass, and plastics all get picked up -- none are pump friendly.

32 footer dual engine cruiser::

Annual Maintenance (tuneup, LOF, winterizing): done by owner: $500, done by Marina: $1000

Summer Dockage: $3200 (Lake Ontario) to $6500 (Lake Simcoe) -- between $100 and $200/foot

Haulout & Winter Storage: $2500-$4000

Fuel: 120gallon fillup = $800ish, goes 120-200 miles. Toronto to Rochester and back is 190miles,

Repairs to wear items and periodic upgrades are extra - always expensive.

A sail boat will be less on fuel but what you save there will be spent on liquor consumed at the dock.

What's this two - fifteen billion dollars for?
She wants the money even before the corp. is set up, sight unseen.

Anyone remember what Chretien got turfed for?

edit: I skipped the weird guy and his comments.

Here's a different perspective:
How Bill C-32 will bring relief for many Canadians
