Inflation

Not really , inflation is a bit controllable and I think price gouging with groups like Lowblaws is criminal. Bread pricing fixing to start . Now a new class action suit .

Until fines are an order of magnitude more than ill-gotten profits or they nuke integration if you get caught, there is no real disincentive. Weston has no morals. Fines are normally far far less than the profits (and they don't need to be paid for a very long time after the profits were booked).

Is there another class action lawsuit on food pricing?
IF the bread fiasco is anything to judge, nothing will change.
This is it. What's the point of laws, tickets, fines, etc if there are no consquences.

'If the penalty is financial, you're only punishing the poor'

If the rich can just buy their way out...it's not really a penalty.

While it's still a penalty, something I read that I like was "Legal for a price". Unless the penalty is large enough, many will choose to do what they want and pay if caught. That applies equally to speeding and price fixing. I wouldn't mind the scandinavian approach of tickets based on income. The $250 speeding ticket may mean someone making minimum wage can't eat for a week but is a complete non-issue for many. If crimes with high moral culpability (like price fixing bread or politicians trading money for favors) were punished in the magnitude of yearly income, they wouldn't do those things. As it is, the rare time you get caught, you get a menial fine and continue on being a profiteering scumbag. Why change when it's so profitable to be evil?

Didn't a few stores get caught a couple wks ago with under weighing the meat?

YUP

Loblaws at it again

See, apologize and continue pillaging. Why change anything. If they lost most of their profit or were required to terminate the board and C-suite without comp everytime they got caught, they would operate far differently.

That too is controllable. The Canadian competition bureau is supposed to protect completion for Canadians. They have teeth, but lack courage.

Telecom, television, food distribution, insurance are just a few entrenched lobbies that no politician wants to **** with.

Virtue signaling by politicians. F them. Declare emergencies, do nothing to address them or improve in any way and then vote themselves a huge raise (driving up taxes and rent). As expected, Kingston followed the same pattern calling on everyone else to fund the issue. Kingston has 11 councillors. They rejected appeals to reduce council size and voted themselves a raise to 45k for a part time job in 2022. You could easily free up hundreds of thousands there to allocate to hungry people. Useless tits.

councillors are not the problem , it’s our expectation level . We can’t raise a family in a thousand sq ft . We can’t not have nice things . If you’re standing in line at a food bank and you’re holding a take out coffee and a smoke , pick a new line .
Yes that’s over simplified, but not everyone gets a house on the lake . But declaring a state of emergency is weak .

Who are we to judge?

If you're relying on my money , I'm ok having a say in it.
I give annually to the Salvation army , Ian Anderson Hospice , and the Oakville food bank. That is money given freely.
If you wish to use my municipal tax input to prop up the system , I can be a bit judgy. I paid for that right.
You had a choice, you choose to give freely. not necessarily giving you a right to judge. IMHO

The downside is that the Swedish cops will let a dozen Ladas go by at 30+ over while waiting for a bigger fish in a MB.

How about one freebie a year then it's class time and not on the driver's schedule. Bad driving is a huge part of our traffic jam situation. Sorry if the delays and inconveniences you make for others makes one for you.

Adder: Dear government, stop using our cops to cover your errant spending. B U D G E T. got it?

If it was up to me, everyone at the food bank would have to clarify their income statements, visa status, and confirm eligibility.

Did we forget all the ‘students’ posting ‘free food in Canada’ life hack just this past summer?

Problem is people use it that don’t need it.

And I will 100% judge those that choose to take away necessity from others so they can free up cash flow for the latest clothes/shoes/vacation.

Fak them.

How much effort does it take to judge someone as compared to do something about it? I stopped along time ago as it was frustrating and a waste of my time. nowadays i just stay in my own lane.

unless someone is willing to do something about it why waste your time
