Inflation

Spring water is subjective. Years ago my late step father went to a spring on Mississauga Road south of Dundas to get his. Back then there was a horse farm up the hill so he was basically getting filtered horse piss.

Yeah, that was never a spring, it was just a drain pipe which our biology professor pointed out while discussing soil percolation.

October Inflation numbers are in. Slight uptick from 1.6->2.0% which is where BoC wants to be.

I guess no jumbo cut in December?

There is a bunch of smoke around the numbers they used for the last cut. Apparently the gdp numbers were all wrong and revised after the cut. At this point, it's blind monkeys playing darts with the team captain being Alfred E Neuman aka JT.

Seems food prices are rising again. Noticed some increases this morning doing the weekly errand.

Food prices are getting a bit frightening , premium products ( stuff thats not crap ) are over the top
Add insurance rates and the whole "Right to repair" issue.

I was watching one of the many John Deere hate-fests and it spun off to other products going the same route.

I don't know what mechanics have to pay for access to trouble shooting software but if it isn't a problem now it will be later. Even a simple oil change is affected. You can change your own oil but not reset the dash reminder.

Apple phones with glued in batteries and screws with proprietary heads that only Apple screwdrivers can remove.

I pity those that rely on older vehicles as basic transportation while this system changes. Out of warranty cars could be money pits for those with low incomes.

There was talk about manufacturers copy writing body panels so aftermarket ones would be illegal. Pay the man.

You can copy write design , which China does not recognize . There is already some lawsuit about proprietary software access to fix cars , I believe the fight is ongoing .
Perfect example is putting a battery in my BMW , the new battery has to be programmed to the car , so it recognizes charge rates . Because BMW…..

Many cars want you to tell the computer when it gets a new battery now. They track health and charge rates. Many can get away without telling the car if you swap for the same size/chemistry battery. If you change type or size, you really should tell the computer. Thankfully, for most vehicles can do this with aftermarket (but often brand specific) obdii adapters.

Inflation is a stubborn *****.

The Canadian dollar has slid by 5-6% since October, tack that onto inflation for imported goods and services that correct prices quickly, like fresh food, US travel, or anything billed in USD.

The Feds are still printing money and spending it like drunken sailors -- you can't just dump $60B of deficit spending into the economy and hope nothing happens.

Inflation will be stubborn and a concern until Feds stop throwing dumpsters of money into the economy.

I think you're going to find that most independent shops are going to fade away over time as vehicle manufacturers lock down access to software and make increasingly proprietary parts. Given the consolidation in dealerships in the GTA you're going to find substantially reduced competition and much higher prices and cost for routine maintenance and repairs.

Check out the cost difference between OEM brake jobs, brake fluid replacement, coolant flush replacement etc.. and independant shops using good quality 3rd parts. Already a significant different and it's going to get much worse.

Auto manufacturers are jealous of the elevator industry. Argue safety and lock it down to a monopoly. If anyone complains, wave the safety flag and increase rates to cover the lobbying.
