Ice fisherman billed for rescue

There's got to be a way to maintain rugged individualism and still have a rescue system to draw on. This blindsiding people with outrageous charges isn't the way. I propose a Government run high risk behaviour insurance program.:D Slickeren goosepoop. What could go wrong? $800k per annum for top dog and sunshine list at a minimum for minions.

Ontario is populated by people with questionable ideals, freedom and expression is not high on their list.

Why so you can jump all over us, thinking that targetting us is going to change anything.

.. right.:angry3:

Well it's the firefighters that arrive on scene and get the info about who is being "rescued", right? Then they pass on the info to whoever sends the bill, it's not like the 911 has that info. So in the case of the driver stuck on the QEW who didn't call 911 refuse to give his personal info or can the firefighter take down his plate number and bill him through that? Because if that ever happened to me I'd just tell the crew I didn't call them (my phone records would prove that) so I'm not obligated to give them anything therefore I won't receive a bill.

What do firefighters have to do with the rescue of people from waterways, that is the responsibility of transport canada via the coastguard. Quite simple, if the firefighters don't want to respond, don't, end of story. The opp will retrieve the body, done.

I think the bill is a little inflated ,however the issue is this dude was foolish enough to put himself in that situation.

In bc skiers and snowboarders who like to venture into the backcountry(off limits to them and they know it)have to be rescued fairly regularly and the bill is in the thousands.Forget about the dough, they're putting others at risk because they fail to use good judgement.

meh,I'm just thinkin out loud,I do stupid ***** all the time, just glad I haven't got a bill for 5 grand yet;)

Does the US coast guard charge for rescue, nope. Under what authority are they authorized to bill for an area under the control of the provincial and federal government.

You couldn't be more wrong. I would suggest you don't have an engine fire in your boat off Point Abino in Canadian waters and have a US boater do you the favour of calling the Coast Guard. If they respond, you WILL get billed.

Turns out were trained in this thing called ice water rescue? I cant see why we would be the ones doing the rescue... And to "Macs" saying we dont need to go to calls unless its on fire, because the cops will provide care. I have never seen a cop do any patient treatment at any of the calls ive been to.

The federal Government is shirking it's responsibility to the waterways of Canada. The US coastcoard is a branch of homeland security, and the coast guard is paid the same as a member of the US Armed forces. If scugog wants reimbursement, remit a bill to the Canada Coast Guard.

FFS, so much for paying taxes. I could understand if it were a visitor to Canada.........unbelievable!

It's quite sad taxpayers are paying retards with the reasoning skills of a monkey.

Really hope you never need the help of any of the emergency services with that attitude...be just terrible if your house was to catch on fire and they had to send the retards in to deal with it.

As a volunteer firefighter I find it amusing that people think all firefighters are being paid to sit around. Most firefighters in the province are volunteer and I am pretty sure the ones around Scugog are. So when he called, he pulled them away from jobs, family time or whatever else they had going on.

I do not agree with the billing of people being rescued but that is a call from the Mayor and council, NOT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. I do think the threat of billing could delay the rescue until it may be to late.

For the firefighters to not get the guys information to send him a bill would be the same if you were to tell your boss you were not going to do something he asked you to do. Try that sometime and let me know how it worked out for you.

I thought volunteers were paid to respond to calls like these ? no ?

Pardon my ignorance, cause really I don't know anything about how the fire dapartment works, but 5 gs does sound a little hefty to rescue captain bean head from the local lake

And I don't think anyone said firefirefighters njust sit around, people are mjust a little frustrated over how large the bill is

Motorcycles are dangerous, Track days are dangerous. Are we ignoring those warnings?

Yes, so we should pay 100% of our healthcare, **** it, you ignored the warnings

It's totally stupid to charged people on something that important. Even more stupid when the guy didn't call them (dude on QEW)

It would actually be free, or if charged something, just don't pay it, you're not from Canada so Canada can't sue you.

You pay your taxes for "emergency services",someone knowinglly ventures out when warnings are given and gets into trouble is not an "emergency". The other problem is when this crews are out getting this guy out of trouble, what happens if a real emergency comes up and they cannot repsond? If people want lower taxes and live in a "Ford Nation", then this is what kind of charges to expect.

I don't really understand your thought process. I mean I'm not gonna act like I know the first thing about ice fishing, but who the hell decides where to put warnings. The way I see it is Canada is progressively becoming a nanny state. Who decides what speed limits are, and on what roads they should be put on, who decides what curriculum our children should be learning, who decides which drugs should be legal, and which shouldn't?
I say the hell with it all, if I'm riding at 5am on a desolate road you can bet you I'll be breaking the speed limit. All this over protection is preposterous, it doesn't help anyone, and costs us our hard earned money.

I'm not anti government, nor am I an anarchist, but I despise big clunking governments that have hands in just about everything. They're too inefficient, and incredibly slow to react.

sent from my wondrous contraption

What the hell are firefighters doing responding to rescues on a lake. If the call has nothing to do with fires, the matter doesn't concern them. The 911 operator should have directed the matter to the opp. The opp has helicopters, inflatable boats, snow mobiles, and they have the ability to lay charges if necessary.

Well inform us. Rather than mocking us uninformed people, why not offer a counterpoint since you have the inside scoop? Can I legally refuse to give a fire crew my personal info if I didn't call 911? A simple yes or no will suffice.

buddy paid taxes to oshawa, not scugog... as for 5400, that sounds reasonable for 3 fire trucks and who knows how many people on the truck (you're not sending just 2 guys per truck to go out on the ice, though 3 fire trucks to one scene to rescue some old cat stuck in the mud seems overkill). It's not like 3 fire trucks would get the same mileage as a toyota corolla.

now if he hadn't called him and was fine then that's a different story.. how ever if i got a bill i would probably try to fight it too... not on principle but because i'm broke.
